OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — Farmers in Oceanside are gearing up to harvest a never before seen crop in San Diego County: Coffee.“We have an aggressive plan to make Southern California the next leader in the super specialty coffee industry,” said Jay Ruskey of Frinj Coffee. He began working with farms in San Diego five years ago to start planting coffee in old avocado orchards. This summer, they will finally harvest their first crop.“We tried to choose the varieties that not only perform well, but have a certain flavor characteristic that the consumer really enjoys,” said Ruskey.Frinj has also been growing coffee in Santa Barbara, where they have already started harvesting the beans.Bird Rock Coffee Roasters is the first local outlet to sell it. Their website has one pound of the Cuicateco grown by Frinj for 0.“If the coffee quality matches the price, that's all that matters,” said Jeff Taylor, president of Bird Rock Coffee. They recently sent the coffee to the website, Coffee Review, which gave the Cuicateco a 92 out of 100.He said he has been working for six months with Ruskey to get the coffee in his stores. He hopes to get beans from Oceanside as well when they become available in the fall.“I see a rapid expansion I think it's going to be huge,” said Taylor of San Diego county’s potential as a coffee growing region.Ruskey is already ahead of him, planning to double the number of plants they have already in 2019.“We would love to see another 50,000 coffee plants here in Southern California this year, and expand to millions in the next ten years,” said Ruskey. 1594

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (CNS) - Police identified a 43-year-old man armed with a machete who allegedly stabbed a police dog and broke a patrol vehicle's window in Oceanside.About 5 p.m. Tuesday, an officer was inside a vehicle, stopped at a traffic light on College Boulevard and Plaza Drive, when he saw the suspect, Noomane Trabelsi, across the street yelling at him, according to Oceanside Police Department Public Information Officer Tom Bussey. The suspect allegedly approached the vehicle swinging a machete and broke the driver's side window, Bussey said. The officer suffered minor injuries and called for assistance. A perimeter was established, and the suspect was seen near the Mossy Nissan dealership, at 3535 College Blvd., and officers tried to make contact with him, according to Bussey.Trabelsi went into a nearby ravine, prompting officers to deploy a police dog, according to Bussey.Trabelsi allegedly stabbed the dog, named Chico, in his head and then stabbed himself multiple times in his stomach, Bussey said. Chico was taken to a veterinarian and is expected to recover, according to Bussey.Officers, assisted by a San Diego County Sheriff's Department helicopter, searched for Trabelsi for two hours in tough terrain, according to Bussey.Trabelsi was located, arrested and taken to Scripps La Jolla to be treated for the self-inflicted injuries, Bussey said. 1381

Now that you've opened gifts, it's about time to start clearing out those holiday boxes and decorations. But you may want to think twice before you dump them in the garbage or toss them out on the curb. Your trash could make you a target for thieves and some of those items you're trying to recycle may be hazardous. To be safe, start with putting up those new gifts away from any windows in your home. Then, cut up the boxes your gifts came in and put them at the bottom of your trash or recycling bins. This is an easy way to prevent thieves from knowing what you got for the holidays. When it comes to recycling, this is a good time to check out your town or city's recycling rules. Accepted items do vary so depending on where you live, but there are some standard items you should recycle.First, cardboard that's clean and flattened, including shoe and shipping boxes. Wrapping paper can be recycled too, but only if there's no glitter or foil on it. The same thing goes for ribbons and bows. If you want to de-clutter, you can throw in your Christmas cards. Now, as previously mentioned, there are some things recyclers don't want to see. Those items include clothing, cellophane wrapping, or holiday lights. Any packing materials like bubble wrap or packing peanuts should go in the trash. Also, don't forget about the Christmas tree. You can check with your city or even local farms to see if they'll recycle trees to make wood chips for parks, or maybe for animals. You’ll just want to be sure to remove any tinsel, ornament hooks or wire from the tree before handing it over.Lastly, experts say never burn wrapping paper. It can be a fire hazard. The only other potential hazard is in your fridge. Those holiday leftovers will start to go bad Monday. However, you can freeze some leftovers. Typically, food can stay in the freezer for two to three months before it officially goes bad.As for that open bottle of red wine, it only lasts about a week. This story was originally published by Taneisha Cordell at WEWS. 2025

OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KGTV) — A vehicle slammed into a power pole in Oceanside and flipped over early Monday, leaving locals without power and forcing some evacuations. The driver careened into the power pole in the 220 block of N. El Camino Real at about 3:30 a.m. The driver was treated at the scene for minor injuries. The power pole remained upright but was leaning over a nearby mobile home park, threatening some homes. Those homes have been evacuated and power to most of the park has been shut off.SDG&E crews were out to assess the damage Monday. The outage affected at least 180 people. Crews expect to restore power by 4 p.m.It's not clear what caused the driver to lose control. The driver reportedly told Oceanside Police they were trying to avoid hitting a coyote. 785
