SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Nurses say they're approaching a breaking point amid the coronavirus pandemic.A San Diego registered nurse spoke to 10News, but asked we don't identify her out of fear she would lose her job, to explain what she and other healthcare workers on the front lines are experiencing. She said Thursday night she saw a post on a nursing social media page stating nurses were encouraged not to wear N95 masks in the Intensive Care Unit. Also circulating on social media is a Change.org petition titled, "US Physicians/Healthcare Workers For Personal Protective Equipment in COVID-19 Pandemic." The petition garnered more than 800,000 signatures by Friday afternoon.Part of the argument is the CDC downgraded the mode of transmission from aerosol to droplets. That means a surgical mask is allowed over the more sturdy N95 mask."Things that are frightening us the most is 1. Nurses are not allowed to bring their own N95 masks from home, we are not allowed to enter the hospital with them. 2. Management has been asking nurses not to wear their masks in hallways, or at the nursing station... and otherwise nurses have been written up with HR if they do not remove the masks... Masks having been removed from floors and only held by management," the unnamed nurse said, adding some hospitals nurses are only allowed one per shift. That is what's causing some nurses to panic. The nurse said there's been talk about refusing patient care until they are supplied with what they deem sufficient protection equipment. That is spelled out in their responsibilities under the Board of Registered Nursing: 1615

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Parents with students in the San Diego Unified School District are concerned after finding out the state medical board subpoenaed doctors who wrote their students medical exemptions for vaccinations. The district’s physician, Dr. Howard Taras, tells 10News, “We have many more medical exemptions over the past two years than we’ve ever had before.”Taras worked with the district for 30 years and says the increase in medical exemptions concerned him, so he brought it to the Committee on Infectious Diseases of the American Academy of Pediatrics.“I gave them loose data, like how many kids in the school district had medical exemptions that any doctor would see as a very worthwhile reason and how many were coming from doctors that were not very sound reasons in common medical practice," Taras said. The committee then took that list to the Medical Board of California. Now, parents in the district are upset knowing their child was included in a list sent to the state.“I’m absolutely appalled at the irresponsibility to have compiled this list in the first place. This is nothing that should have ever been getting out," a mother who did not want to be identified told 10News.10News learned the medical board is now investigating and has already subpoenaed 32 doctors who wrote medical exemptions for students in the district. A parent shared the letter that was sent home with their student with 10News. The letter states the information being subpoenaed includes:1. The unredacted copy of medical vaccination exemption letters 2. The name and date of birth of all children with medical vaccination exemption 3. The name(s) of the parent and/or legal guardian 4. The contact information of the parent and/or legal guardian “This is a violation of FERPA this is 100 percent unethical and I would say illegal based upon what’s taken place," a parent said. The district’s litigation specialist explains all parents have the right to seek protective action to prevent the disclosure of records. “If some of the actions that I and the medical board have taken lead to fewer medical exemptions, I really truly believe we will save people from fatality," said Taras.A representative with the state medical board responded to our request for more information saying, “The Board does not provide information on its complaints and investigations as both are confidential by law.” 2398

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- More rolling power outages are expected across San Diego as an intense heatwave bakes the county.SDG&E warned Monday that more rotating outages are likely across the region for the next few days."We certainly understand it's a pandemic and everyone is at home right now. We're working from home and schooling from home, and we totally get that, but everything we can possibly do to conserve any ounce of energy is going to help the collective right now," said Denice Menard communications manager for SDG&E.The California Independent System Operator runs the majority of the state's grid. The non-profit says the outages are necessary due to increased demand from the scorching temperatures, but some industry experts disagree."Asleep at the wheel might be a thought that comes to mind," said Bill Powers, Principal of Powers Engineering. Powers has worked on electrical systems for decades, and he's also testified as an expert on energy matters.Powers said there was nothing unusual about the heat."Those of us that watch this on a daily basis knew that Friday was a hot day, but it wasn't an atypical hot day. There was nothing special about Friday's temperature or electrical demand in terms of what we are capable of handling," said Powers. The last time California had rolling blackouts was in 2001. Powers believes the outages have more to do with how the power is managed rather than how much is available."That's due to their whole format where they determine who has the cheapest power in this moment, and then we will let that operate. If you have some units that take awhile to come up to speed that are higher cost, the system doesn't really work that well for that," said Powers.California's governor also called the outages unacceptable and promised a swift investigation."If they start operating the grid with a little bit of practical wisdom, they're not going to be any more blackouts. We have plenty of power, we have to use it in a smart way, that's what they get paid to do," said Powers. The outages usually last an hour and happen between 2 pm and 10 pm.No one from the California ISO was available for comment Monday. 2174
