A Northern California family was forced to evacuate their home over the weekend, as the Carr wildfire continues to spread. Not only was the family tasked with getting themselves out, they also had to evacuate the animals on their rescue farm.Lisa Ellsworth runs Tiny Tim’s Pals, a pet rescue farm in El Dorado Hills, California.“It’s our family, yeah,” says Ellsworth. "We take ‘em in from—sometimes they’ve been abandoned; a lot have been abused, neglected.”This weekend, those animals needed to be rescued from their sanctuary, as the fire in Northern California moved frighteningly close to their farm.“All the sudden, our neighbors come drivin’ up and they’re like, ‘Get out! We’re being evacuated,’” recalls Ellsworth. “The police are coming around, so that’s the notice.”Because of the time constraints to get out, they had to abandon two pigs and two feral dogs that couldn’t be corralled into trailers in time. The animals the family could take, they brought to the Rolling Hills Equestrian Center.Terry Skevington, with the center, says it’s one of the few places that allows owners to bring animals of all shapes and sizes. The animals can even sleep on site with them.“I had an old couple park here and stay with their cats, because the hotels wouldn’t let them stay with their cats,” says Skevington. “To some of ‘em, that’s all they got left.”He says the outpouring of donations of items--like fans for the animal stalls, halters and even feed--has been overwhelming.As for Ellsworth, she doesn’t know the status of her home or the animals she left behind, but she says she’s been able to keep it off her mind by staying busy. Fortunately, Ellsworth has insurance. She says in the worst-case scenario, she’d use the money as an opportunity to build a new barn for her animals.Representatives for the Humane Society that serves the region say, overall, they’ve seen about 1,000 animals displaced since the Carr fire broke out. About 150 of those animals have been housed at Rolling Hills. The center’s operators here say those animals and their owners can stay as long as they need.  2118

A month after the deadliest mass shooting in America brought bump stocks to national attention, the rifle modification is again for sale and there's no regulation on the horizon.Slide Fire, the company that owns the patent on the rifle modification, said it has resumed taking new orders for bump stocks for the first time after temporarily suspending new sales a month ago."We will resume limited sales on November 1st at 8:30 a.m. CST," said Slide Fire, in an email from its customer services department to prospective buyers. "However, we have not yet reached adequate inventory levels to offer sales of all products."For most of October, the company kept a message posted to its homepage saying that sales of bump stocks were suspended.That suspension happened shortly after gunman Stephen Paddock used rifles fitted with bump stocks to commit the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history on October 1 in Las Vegas. Using his 32nd floor suite at the Mandalay Bay hotel as a sniper's nest, he shot into an outdoor concert on the ground below, killing 58 people and wounding hundreds before taking his own life.Slide Fire did not return messages from CNNMoney asking about the change in their sales policy.Experts say demand for the product likely remained high during the period of suspended sales."I imagine they were able to fulfill the flurry of orders they received after the Las Vegas tragedy, but I would think demand is still far stronger than usual for them," said Rommel Dionisio, gun industry analyst for Aegis Capital Corp.Related: One month after mass shooting, still no restrictions on bump stocksBump stocks speed up the rate of fire for semi-automatic rifles to mimic fully automatic fire. Most were unable to restock because they couldn't get new inventory.FosTech Outdoors, which was selling bump stocks under the brand name Bumpski, also suspended taking new orders shortly after the Vegas shooting. A proposition on the November ballot would eliminate the state's ban on affirmative action when it comes to public hiring, contracting and college admissions.That means public agencies and universities can consider race, sex and ethnicity as it makes decisions, in an effort to address diversity.“I was able to go to Stanford and prove myself, and then go on to Georgetown and UCLA Law School on a full-ride scholarship, because I was given that initial opportunity,” Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez said Monday.Gonzalez said she was one of the last to benefit from affirmative action in California, because state voters banned the practice via prop 209 in 1996. She was speaking at a campaign event in favor of Prop 16, which would repeal the ban on affirmative action. A Maryland police officer has been arrested and charged with rape after allegedly assaulting a woman during a traffic stop.Ryan Macklin, a six-year veteran of the Prince George's County Police Department, was taken into custody Monday evening, according to a news release from the department.He has been suspended without pay, the department said, and has been charged with first-degree rape, second-degree rape, perverted practice, second-degree assault and fourth-degree sex offense.Police said Macklin pulled the woman over at about 1 a.m. on Thursday. During the stop, police said, Macklin forced the woman "to perform a sexual act" while they were both in the woman's car in a parking lot. Police said Macklin was on duty, in uniform and driving a marked police cruiser at the time.Prince George's County Police Chief Hank Stawinski said at a news conference that the woman came forward "several hours" after the incident with the encouragement of friends. Police said they do not know why Macklin allegedly targeted the driver."The charges against this officer are highly troubling," Stawinski said. "Officers take an oath to protect others, not to abuse their authority in order to victimize someone. Those who live and work in Prince George's County deserve the very best from the men and women of this department."Stawinski said police have information that suggests "there may be additional people impacted by this officer's conduct." A plan to raise San Diego's hotel tax to expand the convention center appears to be headed to the March 2020 ballot. The City Council voted 5-4 Monday to formalize its intention to place the tourist tax hike on next year's primary election. The measure, called "Yes! For a better San Diego," would raise the transient occupancy tax by as much as 3.25 percent per night, depending on location. Hotels closest to the heart of the city would see the tax rate increase the most. The revenue would fund a convention center expansion, homeless services and road repair. The council was split on its decision because voters passed Measure L in 2016. Measure L called for citizens initiatives to be placed on November general elections, when turnout is highest. However, the measure gave the City Council the option to move votes to different elections if it sees fit. It is still unclear whether the measure needs a simple majority or two-thirds support. The City Council is expected to formally place the tourist tax increase on the March ballot when it calls for the election in the fall. 1092
