The annual Perseid meteor shower is underway and will hit its peak this weekend.The meteor shower, so named because the meteors appear to come from the constellation Perseus, lasts for several weeks – from July 17 to Aug. 24 – but peak meteor activity will take place between about 4 p.m. ET on Sunday, Aug. 12 and 4 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 13, according to NASA.During the peak, one can expect to see as many as 60 or 70 meteors per hour.Night sky conditions should be great for meteor viewing: The peak coincides perfectly with the new moon, meaning the sky will be plenty dark and meteors will be easy to spot. Most meteor showers are best after midnight. 702

HAWAII (KGTV) -- The United States Geological Survey is reporting that an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.0 struck Hawaii Thursday afternoon.According to the USGS, the quake happened about 1:30 p.m., 11 miles south of Fern Acres on the Big Island.The earthquake was just one of hundreds of earthquakes that have swarmed the island, prompting concerns that Kilauea Volcano could erupt.The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory indicated that a volcanic eruption was possible but not imminent. Kilauea is one of the world’s most active volcanoes.The series of earthquakes came after a collapse of a crater floor of Pu?u ?ō?ō, which is a volcanic cone in the eastern rift zone of the Kīlauea Volcano.Since that collapse, about 250 earthquakes were reported in the area into Tuesday evening, according to Hawaiian Volcano Observatory status report.Check out the map below to see the area near where the earthquake hit: 931

Grocery chain Kroger is reportedly considering banning all Visa card transactions at its locations throughout the United States due to a dispute on swipe fees, Bloomberg reported. Kroger is reportedly taking the first step toward stopping Visa transactions. At its Foods Co. Supermarkets, which are located in California, the chain will stop accepting Visa transactions next month, Bloomberg reported. “It’s pretty clear we need to move down this path, and if we have to expand that beyond Foods Co., we’re prepared to take that step,” Kroger spokesperson Chris Hjelm told Bloomberg. "When the amount retailers pay in card fees gets out of alignment, as we believe it is now, we don’t believe we have a choice but to use whatever mechanism possible to get it back in alignment.”While Kroger itself has grocery stores in 21 states, Kroger owns a number of regional chains throughout the country — Baker’s, City Market, Dillons, Food 4 Less, Fred Meyer, Fry’s, Gerbes, King Soopers, Jay C, Food Store, Owens Market, Pay-Less Super Markets, QFC, Ralphs and Smith’s Food and DrugVisa issued a response to Kroger's announcement. "Visa is disappointed at Kroger’s decision to stop accepting Visa credit cards at its Foods Co. stores. HOBE SOUND, Florida — For Rony Bottex, 65, fracturing his leg and using crutches is nothing compared to what could have happened on I-95 in Hobe Sound, Florida on Monday morning. "If he wasn't there, if the officer wasn't there, I'd be dead," said Bottex. Rony was involved in an accident on I-95. Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Mithil Patel, 31, was the first to respond and while he's talking to Rony?outside of the car, a van slammed into a car, sending it spinning in their direction.?"He saw the car come right to me and pushed me to the side and thank God I fall, but he's the one who got hurt for me," said Bottex. "He take the hit and pushed me out of the way." Trooper Patel was taken to St. Mary's Medical Center where he is now in good condition. Rony says he has not stopped praying for the brave trooper who he says nearly gave his own life to save Rony. "They do the jobs for you, not for them, and he was going to take the hit for me, he did," he said. Rony says thanks to Trooper Patel, he's still alive for his wife and six children. He now wants this stranger who saved him to be a part of his family too. "What I want to tell his family, I want to be with him as a family because people like this you never forget them," added Bottex. The trooper's father said the family has been overwhelmed with calls and support. Rony says he hopes he can get in touch with the trooper and his family. 1490
