BEIJING, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader Li Changchun has pledged to strengthen cooperation between Chinese and foreign media and to facilitate foreign media coverage of China. Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, made the remarks Friday evening when he met the heads of 10 major media organizations attending the World Media Summit in Beijing.     The Chinese government has been promoting media development and supporting Chinese media in enhancing exchanges and cooperation with foreign counterparts in news, human resources, information technologies and business development, he said. BEIJING, July 20 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao called on diplomats to play a bigger role in serving the country's reform and national interests as China is seeking a stable and rapid development amid global economic downturn.     "China is at a crucial moment in dealing with the financial crisis and maintaining rapid economic development ... diplomacy must better serve the overall situation of reform, development and stability," said Hu while addressing a national meeting attended by diplomatic envoys, which ended Monday in Beijing. It should focus on the task of ensuring growth, people's life and stability," He said.     Hu urged Chinese envoys to join the global efforts for promoting economic growth, safeguard national sovereignty and security, firmly follow the one-China policy and maintain stability.     China will stick to the independent foreign policy of peace, pursue the path of peaceful development and develop friendly cooperation with all the countries in line with the Five Principles of Peaceful Co-existence, Hu said.     Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao also addressed the meeting, saying "the recovery of the global economy will be a slow process with twists and turns, there must be a long-term preparedness to effectively deal with (the global downturn)".     The global financial crisis has plunged the world into deep recession, and it's difficult to say the global downturn has reached the bottom, Wen said.

URUMQI, July 19 (Xinhua) -- Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region would accelerate local legislation against separatism, said the region's top lawmaker on Sunday.     Eligen Imibakhi, chairman of the Standing Committee of the Xinjiang Regional People's Congress, said the regional congress would unswervingly safeguard the dignity and authority of the Constitution and other laws .     The July 5 incident involving beating, smashing, looting and burning, was a severe violent crime colluded, planned and organized by "three forces" of extremism, separatism and terrorism both at home and abroad, said the regional top legislator.     A most urgent problem to be solved was the lack of law booklets in ethnic minority languages, he said. The region had organized experts to do the translation work and the booklets would soon be distributed to farmers and herdsmen across the region, he added.

BEIJING, Oct. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's retail sales of consumer goods totaled 570 billion yuan (about 83.5 billion U.S. dollars) during the National Day holiday, with average daily sales up 18 percent compared with the same period of last year, the Ministry of Commerce said Friday.     Sales of household appliances soared during the eight-day holiday which started from Oct. 1. Among them, high-definition flat screen TV sets, digital cameras, side-by-side refrigerators and 3G mobile phones are consumers' favorites. In the case of Kaiyuan Mall in Xi'an, capital of Northwest China's Shaanxi Province, sales of household appliances gained by 34.7 percent year on year. Customers are seen at a shopping mall in Shanghai, east China, Oct. 8, 2009    Jewelry and cars became hot sellers as well. The sales of jewelry of Caishikou Department Store in Beijing topped 100 million yuan, up 30 percent year on year. Car sales of major car-selling companies in Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality increased by 71.7 percent year on year.     The selling boom in the home appliance and car sectors was partly stimulated by a policy approved by the State Council in June this year, aiming to spur domestic consumption by subsidizing buyers of cars and household appliances, according to the ministry.     For example, consumers can first sell their old household appliances to recycling companies and obtain a certification card from the recyclers. Card holders then can purchase new appliances with a 10 percent cut in prices when showing retailers the card.     Meanwhile, sales promotion in major cities also played an important role in the holiday consumption boom.
