SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Senior citizens in Chula Vista lit up the runway at St. Paul's Plaza, a senior living community.It was the center's first fashion show and eight residents were transformed into models. Each had makeup, hair, and wardrobe provided thanks to Macy's. “Today’s fashion show is all about friendships," said Mary Johnson with the community outreach team. "Friendships are just as important as taking good care of yourself, exercising, and good nutrition. As we get older friendships get even more important."Ladies who modeled said the day made them feel special and confident. “A lot of people when they get to be our age don’t want to do anything different. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Steve Askin tells the story of a tenant who rented from him for a decade.He charged rent below market - but still made out well."Over those ten years they paid me a quarter million dollars. They paid my mortgage, and then some," Askin said.Askin said he realizes he's way better off today because of his tenants.That's one reason he joined a group called The Property Owners for Fair and Affordable Housing. On Thursday, he and 15 other member landlords announced support of a bill that protects financially struggling tenants from eviction during the Coronavirus era."We as landlords aren't happy if someone can't pay the rent, but we have many more resources than our tenants," said Askin.Assembly Bill 1463, carried by Democrat David Chiu, would ban evictions of tenants who cannot pay rent through April 1, unless the Coronavirus state of emergency ends earlier. Tenants would then have a year to pay back the missed rent. Only then could a landlord take a tenant to court - and eviction would not be one of their legal remedies."It's trying to mandate something that we're already doing," said Kendra Bork, who heads the San Diego Rental Housing Association, which opposes the bill.Bork, CFO of Cambridge Management Group, said 90 percent of her tenants are paying rent on time - and the others are doing payment plans."We're trying to keep people in their apartments. We don't want a bunch of vacancies," Bork said.She said a better option would be rental assistance - which can also help keep the economy going. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — San Diego Zoo biologists are part of a team of researchers that have rescued the last remaining southwestern pond turtles from an area ravaged by the Bobcat Fire.The researchers spend the last couple of weeks finding and recovering the reptiles from the San Gabriel Mountains. The area, which was scorched by the Bobcat Fire, from Sept. 6 until early November, is now at risk of mudslides and debris flows from rain, which could impact the turtles."Our role as conservationists is to provide refuge and care for wildlife in trouble," said Kim Gray, curator of herpetology and ichthyology, San Diego Zoo Global. "We are happy to make a home for these pond turtles until their home in the mountains can be made safe for them and their offspring."The southwestern pond turtle is now rare in Southern California and faces risks to its survival, including habitat loss, invasive nonnative predators and competitors.Over the two weeks, researchers rescued eight southwestern pond turtles. The turtles will be cared for at the San Diego Zoo until their habitat is made after this year’s rainy season. When their habitat is secure, they will be returned. 1173

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Students at an East San Diego school will meet Thursday to decide how to honor two classmates murdered in Tijuana this month.Christopher Alexis Gomez, a 17-year-old senior at O'Farrell Charter School in Encanto, and 18-year-old Juan Suarez-Ojeda, who graduated from the same school last year, were found shot to death in Tijuana on Nov. 25. Gomez's cousin, Katheryn Garcia, told 10News Wednesday that the two teens were likely tortured in different locations before being killed execution-style and left in front of the Lomas Verdes housing complex.Another teen believed to be Ojeda's friend was also killed.Students at O'Farrell Charter are set to meet with school officials Thursday to decide how to honor their two classmates. The school has also set up a GoFundMe page to help Gomez’s and Suarez-Ojeda’s families with funeral costs and expenses.RELATED: Two San Diegans, Mexican teen shot to death in TijuanaFurther details regarding the murders have yet to be released by authorities.Garcia told 10News her cousin said he was heading to a barbecue in Ensenada on Friday.
