CARLSBAD, Calif. (KGTV) -- The longest-serving mail carrier in Carlsbad is set to retire Friday after 58 years of service.Mack Mata Jr. will be recognized Friday in front of his peers and family.“It’s not often we celebrate an employee who has served the Postal Service for 58 years,” said Postmaster Cindy Gibson.In the fall of 1960, Mata and his fiancée were downtown when she saw a “help wanted” sign in the window of the post office. After applying and completing a test, Mata was sworn in as a postal employee in Carlsbad in November of the same year.Mata recalled his fond memories at the office, saying he would watch kids grow up and move away only to return and become his customers.Mata also remembers the time he saved a woman along his route. “One day, something told me I should check on her and sure enough, I found her lying on the ground after she had fallen and couldn’t get up. She said, ‘I knew you’d eventually show up to help me.'A lot has changed since then. Mata says he used to make special deliveries on his bicycle and stamps only cost four cents.Mata is now married to Sheila Mata, who works at the Vista Post Office, has two sons, four grandchildren and plans to spend lots of time gardening and traveling with his wife after retirement. 1278
CALIPATRIA, Calif. (KGTV) — Six prison guards were injured during an attack by an inmate this week, leading to the use of deadly force.Calipatria State Prison inmate Douglas Compton refused to leave an "out-of-bounds" area in the prison's yard on Thursday after three officers ordered him to do so, according to the state's Department of Correction and Rehabilitation (CDCR).Compton then stabbed one of the officers in the head and face, CDCR says. Responding officers used batons, pepper spray, and other use-of-force options to try and subdue Compton.During the struggle, Compton punched another two officers.An officer in an observation tower discharged one lethal round from a rifle to stop the attack. No one was injured by the use of lethal force, CDCR says.Six officers were injured and taken to an outside hospital for treatment and released.Compton was injured and treated, before being transferred to another prison.CDCR added that two inmate-made weapons were recovered at the scene. CDCR investigators are investigating the weapons as well as the use of deadly force.Compton was sentenced to 112 years to life in prison following a 2013 conviction of second-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter with the use of a firearm and possession of a firearm by an ex-felon with the use of an altered ID. 1315
CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (KGTV) - Camp Pendleton Marines and Sailors started training Friday to help firefighters at the Creek Fire near Fresno."They're the right people for the job because they're Marines and Sailors," Commanding Officer of the 7th Engineer Support Battalion, Lt. Col. Melina Mesta said. She described the traits Marines and Sailors hold as well as their training that covers responding to practically every kind of disaster.Two hundred and fifty Marines and Sailors volunteered to train to help firefighters. They deploy Saturday to learn more in the Sierra National Forest. Lt. Col. Mesta said by next week they will be on the fire line.On base, clumps of a couple dozen Marines in neon yellow shirts and forest green pants learned how to shelter in place if a fire overcomes them. They have a bag about the size of a loaf of bread containing what looks like a plastic tarp. They shake the tarp and cocoon themselves on the ground, crucial training that could save their life if they're overcome by the blaze.Military Liason with the U.S. Forest Service Frank Guzman explained why these crews are so vital, "our crews, who start in the southwest maybe, they're just tired and they've been doing this since April and we don't have anyone else to go to."Guzman said they are already utilizing the National Guard and resources from Canada and Mexico. Marines and Sailors are their last resource."Marines haven't been deployed since 1994 but in four out of the last six years we've had the active military deployed, so it's getting more and more common," Guzman said.More common, but never something San Diegan LCpl. Marissa Urias thought she would do. "My original plan was to go to college after high school and study Kinesiology and Minor in Nutrition, and then my dad told me my great-grandpa was in the Marine Corps. My dad was also in for four, or five years so then I also had a sense of calling to also join, but I never really envisioned myself going to help out and assist with the fires," LCpl. Urias said. She admitted she was a little anxious, but she's ready to protect her neighbors."California is here, California is home, got to protect it while you can," she said.Lt. Col. Mesta said several of those being deployed have family in the area and they're honored to protect their families and neighbors.LCpl. Urias is part of the first wave that will come out of Camp Pendleton. They are training another group so they can be ready for the future, whether that is far away or right here in San Diego."If the season continues like this there's always that possibility," Guzman said the lack of rain created these dire circumstances.Currently, 106 large wildfires are burning across the Western U.S., according to the National Interagency Fire Center, and nearly 6.7 million acres burned this year. Yet, even today there are countless eligible Americans who say they’ve fallen through the cracks.In New York state, Hanna Brandow has no idea why she hasn’t gotten a stimulus payment.“My sister and I who both have not gotten the check yet. We did our taxes this year and got our returns already,” said Brandow. “So, it's very strange.”In California, Alexis Lopez is also in limbo.“For most people, it was like 'this person got it, this person got it,' said Lopez. "I was like, ‘well maybe there's some delay with mine.’ No big deal.”And in Ohio, Karen Melroy is also stuck in in stimulus purgatory.“I received my refund by a direct deposit,” said Melroy. “So, there's no reason I can think of why I shouldn't have received one.”All of them say they get the same message when checking on the IRS website.“I normally add a few more expletives to mine when I see it, but it's something to the effect of payment status not available,” said Melroy.It turns out they’re not alone. Those four words: "payment status not available" are exasperating countless Americans who appear otherwise eligible for payments but have not been paid and can’t get answers as to why.“The IRS obviously was very rushed and even when the government takes a year and a half to do a computer system, there are problems with it,” said Robert Probasco, director of the tax clinic at Texas A&M University.In May the IRS added 3,500 telephone representatives to help with problems, but most can only provide general information.“I found this like nine-step guide of how to get a human on the phone at the IRS. I did it twice and hit a dead end,” said Brandow.Because IRS offices remain closed due to the pandemic, the agency tells us that call center agents are working from home. That means they don’t have access to secure personal information specific to each case.“This was designed poorly obviously because it doesn't tell you which of those things happen and if it is a glitch, it doesn't tell you what kind of a glitch,” said Probasco.The IRS is doing a phased reopening at key processing sites and call centers.The IRS tells us some employees have returned to work in Kentucky, Texas and Utah. They say they will follow state and local guidelines as employees return to work in Georgia, Tennessee, Missouri, Michigan and by the end of June in Indiana, Ohio, California, Oregon and Puerto RicoBut if you can’t get your payment issue resolved by the end of the year, you may have to claim your unpaid stimulus assistance on next year’s tax return as a credit.“That doesn't help me today,” said Melroy.That's a sentiment many like Alexis Lopez share as they struggle to rebound financially from the pandemic.“You're left in limbo wondering, 'am I ever going to get this stimulus check that most Americans received?' California regulators are considering a plan to charge a fee for text messaging on mobile phones to help fund programs that make phone service accessible to the poor.The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) is set to consider the proposal in a vote scheduled for next month, according to The Mercury News.It's not clear how much mobile phone users would be asked to pay under the proposal, but it would likely be billed as a flat surcharge, not a per-text fee, according to the paper.And wireless industry and business groups are not "LOLing."
