SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- For students in the 3D printing club at Westview High in Poway whose goal was never to hit the 'print' button, they've come a long way."It feels really amazing to know the 3D printing club is helping those who are in need."Victor Ku is president for Westview High's 3D printing club that started up this past year.When the club started, their mission was purely educational. They wanted to create a curriculum and teach people the basics of 3D printing because they didn't have the money to actually print anything."It can be very expensive and super confusing at first which is why we believe all these limitations shouldn’t restrict one from getting the opportunity to learn its such an amazing tool."Then when March came around, Victor said "we were back to square one. We didn’t really know what to do and we realized we need to quickly pivot towards the communities needs and in this case it was face shields or personal protective equipment."That's when the team of young and aspiring engineers got to work and finally hit 'print'."We took a small break and waited for all the design and the actual professional engineers to perfect the design before we started mass producing these face shields," Victor said.They've donated about 400 face shields to five different organizations, and are some of the youngest people to make a difference."We’ve distributed them to hospitals, hair salons and post offices to name a few. That little bit could definitely help save any lives."With things easing up, Victor said they want to widen their distribution list. They're also accepting donations to help buy supplies to create more face shields. 1671

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Following several years of record-breaking fires around California, the state’s department of insurance is letting residents know they have options if their insurance gets dropped. Under Proposition 103, a law approved by voters in 1988, insurers are required to file rate changes with the California Department of Insurance. Although the department doesn’t set rates, state law requires that insurers’ rates are based on a demonstrated risk of loss. New laws that both took effect in 2019 also offer some protection. One of the laws specifies that homeowners living in a declared wildfire disaster area or adjacent zip codes receive one year of protection from non-renewal. The state also extended protections against non-renewal for people who suffer a total loss during a fire to two automatic renewals or 24 months. If you find yourself in the middle of a non-renewal, the department lists specific rights California residents have: The notice of non-renewal must be sent at least 45 days prior to policy expiration. That notice of non-renewal must contain: (1) the reason or reasons for the non-renewal; (2) the telephone number of the insurer's representatives who handle consumer inquiries or complaints; and (3) a statement indicating that if the consumer has contacted the insurer to discuss the non-renewal and remains unsatisfied, the policyholder may have the matter reviewed by the Department. The insurance company must determine whether to renew or non-renew based upon its underwriting guidelines, which must be objective, have a substantial relationship to the risk of loss, and be applied consistently among insureds in the particular group being non-renewed.For anyone who can’t find insurance, the department has another option. The FAIR plan is available to all homeowners as a last option for coverage. The maximum limit written by the plan on residential property is ,500,000. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Family and friends of Sabrina Rosario gathered Saturday night for a memorial service to honor her and her four boys. Rosario and her boys were killed by her estranged husband, the children's father, last month. The boys: Enzi, 3, Zuriel, 5, Ezekiel, 9 and Zeth, 11. Rosario was 29-years-old. RELATED: Fourth boy dies following murder-suicide in Paradise HillsRosario's mother, Gloria Collins, said the night was meant to be a celebration for her daughter and grandchildren. Collins says her daughter was brave and beautiful and she finds comfort in knowing she's in a better place. Roughly 400 people filled the church in Paradise Hills for the memorial. Pictures and flowers filled the front of the room. The service included prayer, singing and stories of Rosario and the boys. Rosario had been granted a restraining order from her estranged husband just hours before she was killed, but that order was never served. 947

Bernie Sanders renewed calls for an assault weapons ban but acknowledged uwpards of 10 million are already in civilian hands. “That is more than the United States military has,” Sanders said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Even though many local businesses have struggled amid the pandemic and San Diego County saw an unprecedented spike in unemployment in the second quarter, there has not been a significant jump in the number of empty retail storefronts -- at least not yet.The vacancy rate in San Diego County ticked up slightly to 5.6 percent in the second quarter, according to an analysis by commercial real estate firm CBRE.Vacancies tend to be a lagging indicator. Large national chains like 24 Hour Fitness and Pier 1 Imports have announced closures in recent weeks, but the businesses are still occupying their commercial spaces. 24 Hour Fitness is closing four clubs in San Diego County. Pier 1 Imports is closing all 11 of its local stores; four of those locations have already closed.While vacancies take time, the pandemic has slowed the region’s commercial real estate market in other ways, said CBRE Associate Field Research Director Michael Combs.New leasing activity in the retail sector dropped to nearly a 10-year low in the second quarter, down nearly 50 percent from the first three months of 2020.“There just haven't been a lot of new deals as tenants especially in retail are waiting to see how this situation plays out,” he said.The slowdown in new leasing activity may be a sign that companies are holding off on plans to expand operations, since new leases with larger footprints are typically signed far in advance. 1448
