A 50-year-old woman sabotaged Australian supermarket strawberries with sewing needles in an alleged act of workplace revenge, prosecutors told a Brisbane court Monday. My Ut Trinh has been charged with seven counts of contamination of goods and faces up to 10 years in jail if convicted.Trinh's arrest Sunday followed at least 100 reported cases of sewing needles or pins found in strawberries across the country earlier this year, sparking nationwide panic. Metal was also found in a banana, an apple and a mango, which the government believed to be isolated "copycat" cases or hoaxes.Trinh is reportedly a former supervisor at the Berrylicious and Berry Obsession farm in Wamuran, north of Brisbane. Police will allege she felt mistreated by colleagues and had spoken to coworkers about taking revenge, according to CNN affiliate Nine News. The Queensland Strawberry Growers Association (QSGA) has welcomed Trinh's arrest, but called for copycat offenders to also face charges. The case against Trinh only relates to six or seven punnets of strawberries."It was a crisis driven by social media and the only real victims were the strawberry growers, and to some extent other Australian fruit growers and exporters," the association said in a statement.Queensland Police said it had conducted a "complex" national investigation "with multiple government, law enforcement and intelligence agencies" in order to zone in on Trinh.Trinh was not granted bail. Her next court appearance will be on November 22. 1540

(KGTV) - The Tesla vehicle involved in a deadly California crash last week was operating in "Autopilot" mode, the company confirmed Friday. The vehicle is now the latest accident involving an autonomous vehicle in the last month. The fatal crash on March 23 occurred in Mountain View, Calif. The vehicle had been engaged in Autopilot and alerted the driver with "several" visual and audible "hands-on" warnings, Tesla said in a release. The driver, identified as 38-year-old Walter Huang, did not have his hands on the wheel in the six seconds leading up to the fiery crash, according to the drive logs Tesla recovered."The driver had about five seconds and 150 meters of unobstructed view of the concrete divider with the crushed crash attenuator, but the vehicle logs show that no action was taken," according to Tesla.Tesla said the force of the crash was so severe the highway safety barrier designed to reduce impact into the concrete lane divider had been crushed."We have never seen this level of damage to a Model X in any other crash," Tesla said.Officials from Tesla said they are working with investigators to understand what led to the crash. The company maintained, however, that drivers using Autopilot are 3.7 times less likely to be involved in a fatal crash."No one knows about the accidents that didn’t happen, only the ones that did. The consequences of the public not using Autopilot, because of an inaccurate belief that it is less safe, would be extremely severe," Tesla said.In March, a self-driving Uber vehicle hit and killed a pedestrian in Arizona. That crash had also been utilizing a self-driving system. Dashboard video showed the driver appeared to not have his hands on the wheel at the time of the collision. 1770

(KGTV) — Several storms that have showered California with snow and rain have lifted the state out of drought for the first time since 2011.The U.S. Drought Monitor said Thursday that California was free of drought for the first time since Dec. 20, 2011. The state had seen some form of drought for at least 376 consecutive weeks. As of Thursday, the agency said more than 93 percent of the state was out of drought conditions. RELATED: Devastating 'ARk' storm envisioned for California by U.S. Geological SurveyAmong the areas still seeing "abnormally dry" conditions are a small patch along California's border with Oregon and parts of four Southern California counties, including San Diego County. San Diego County's drought conditions were due to abnormally dry years prior to this winter, according to the agency, and local reservoirs were not at capacity despite the heavy rains."The rest of the region in Southern California is still abnormally dry due to very dry previous years. Reservoirs in San Diego County are only at 65 [percent] capacity. Big Bear Lake was down 18 feet in early March, although expected to continue to rise," the agency says.RELATED: Recent rain not enough to bring San Diego out of droughtLocally, weather is expected to continue warming into next week, after the region saw more rain and snow last weekend. 1347

(KGTV) -- Scientists in La Jolla may be close to curing baldness by finding a way to create new hair cells. Although scientists say the technology is still years away from human trials, 10News is digging into some other things you can do if you’re one of millions of men experiencing hair loss. According to WebMD, about 85 percent of men will have major hair thinning by the time they’re 50. Some men even start to lose hair before they turn 21. There are also some common myths when it comes to hair loss. RELATED: La Jolla lab creating cure for baldnessAccording to WebMD, despite what you may have heard, things like wearing a baseball cap and running your fingers through your hair won’t make you go bald. The site reports that almost all hair loss in men is a genetic trait that comes from your parents. Other causes may include certain medications, too much vitamin A or not enough protein. WebMD says there are some things you can do, but be warned, most “miracle” products don’t work so, when in doubt, talk to your doctor or dermatologist. When it comes to treatment, the site says there are some things you can do. Treatment OptionsMinoxidilAccording to WebMD, nothing can cure male-pattern baldness, but some medications, such as FDA -approved Minoxidil, can slow it down. Hair transplantWebMD reports that transplants work by moving healthy hair from the back and side of your head to the top, but the procedure is costly and you may have to do it several times before it actually works. Of course, there's always the option of embracing your new look and figuring out how to make it work for you. After all, it seems to be working out well for several famous movie stars. A recent study published in the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School also found that baldness can actually help your career, according to the Hair Science Center of Colorado. The university says this is all due to psychology. According to the research, men who have shaved heads were perceived as more "dominant" than men with a full head of hair or thinning hair. Other Scientific Discoveries out of La JollaHair loss isn't the only thing scientists in La Jolla are working on. UC San Diego researchers and Scripps Research have made several breakthroughs in recent years. UCSD researchers recently published a study showing that a mix of 3D printing and stem cell therapy can be used to treat severe spinal cord injuries. Scientists at the Sanford-Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute in La Jolla are also working to discover the first-ever antiviral drugs to treat Ebola. Also in La Jolla, the Scripps Research Institute reported in 2016 that it discovered a common type of cell in humans that can be used to provoke an immune response against HIV. 2759

(KGTV) – Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Tyrod Taylor was unable to start Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs after his lung was reportedly punctured on accident by a team doctor during pregame treatment.Sources told ESPN that Taylor was suffering from cracked ribs and a team doctor inadvertently punctured his lung while trying to administer a pain-killing injection.Taylor suffered his rib injury during last week’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals.Citing sources, ESPN reported the NFL Players Association is investigating the incident. Doctors have advised Tyrod Taylor not to play "indefinitely” due to his punctured lung. The Chargers were hoping Taylor would be able to start Sunday, but doctors are against it. https://t.co/FHm7aJXC8o— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) September 23, 2020 The apparent error forced Taylor to be deactivated right before kickoff, giving the Chargers’ 2020 first-round pick QB Justin Herbert his first career start.Herbert played well in his surprise start against the defending Super Bowl champions, throwing for 311 yards and a touchdown, while adding a touchdown on the ground. The Bolts, however, lost to the Chiefs in their first home game at the new SoFi Stadium 23-20 in overtime. 1244
