LA JOLLA (CNS) - UC San Diego officials Wednesday were looking into reports that China is cutting off state funding for students from that country who want to study at the school.The concern stems from a Saturday tweet by Victor Shih, an associate professor of political economy at UCSD's School of Global Policy & Strategy, showing an image of a document he said was from the China Scholarship Council giving instructions to students planning to attend UCSD.RELATED: UCSD commencement speaker angers Chinese studentsAn English translation of the document said China's study abroad organizations would no longer process applications from students who have not been granted visas by the U.S. embassy, or scheduled a visa appointment, as of Sunday, according to Shih.Shih captioned the tweet: "China Scholarship Council puts a freeze on all CSC funded scholars to @GPS_UCSD , presumably due to Dalai Lama visit."The action comes three months after the Dalai Lama, who is fiercely opposed by China's communist government, gave a pair of keynote speeches at UCSD's commencement ceremonies. JOINT BASE ANDREWS, MD (KGTV) -- Three Americans held captive in North Korea are believed to have landed safely on United States soil. Kim Dong Chul, Kim Hak-song and Kim Sang Duk (also known as Tony Kim) landed at Joint Base Andrews on Thursday night at 11:25 p.m. At this time they have not yet been seen exiting the plane. President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that the three Americans were on their way home and would land around 2 a.m. eastern time. KEARNY MESA (CNS) - Four men were wanted for robbing a convenience store in Kearny Mesa Sunday, police said.A clerk at the Circle K on Balboa Avenue just east of Interstate 805 was working by herself around 8:45 a.m. Sunday when four men came into the store, looked around and left without making a purchase, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.The four returned about eight minutes later, and one of them pointed a knife at the clerk's abdomen and demanded cigarettes, Heims said. The woman complied, and the men took multiple packs of cigarettes and cigars. JACUMBA (CNS) - Authorities have identified the 22-year-old man who died Saturday after the car he was driving collided with a guardrail on Interstate 8.Gonzalo Martinez of Hemet died shortly after the 4:48 p.m. crash on the eastbound side of the freeway just before In-Ko-Pah Road in Jacumba, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.Martinez lost control of the Volkswagen Jetta he was driving after it drifted toward the shoulder and collided with a guardrail. The car stopped about 40 yards from the point of impact, according to the preliminary California Highway Patrol investigation.He was pronounced dead at the scene. 653
