HAMPTON ROADS, Va. - A new study shows that teens who use vaping devices or e-cigarettes could be at an elevated risk for contracting COVID-19."Maybe they have been in contact with contaminated surfaces or it's been a while since they washed their hands, then they bring a device to their mouth; there are many risks," said Dr. Danielle Lecky-Chadhuri with Pediatric Partners of Hampton Roads. She says young people may think their age protects them from getting coronavirus, but that is not true."Smoking is going to increase receptors in the lungs lining that COVID and or other viruses like influenza can attach to and cause further inflammation," said Lecky-Chaudhuri.A new study by Stanford University School of Medicine published in August found that teens were five to seven times more likely to experience COVID-19 symptoms like coughing, fever, and shortness of breath compared to those who never smoked or vaped."Even the ones that are nicotine-free have been shown to have traces and small amounts of nicotine in them," she said.Lecky-Chaudhuri says teens are more vulnerable to nicotine dependence."Certainly the younger they are, the brain is not matured, and that would increase sustainability to be addicted and dependent," she said.Nicotine isn't the only danger of using e-cigarettes."We have seen injuries from burns, explosions, chemical injuries as well as nicotine exposure and overdose," she said.Lecky-Chaudhuri recommends talking to your children about acute and long-term effects – perhaps listing reasons that would relate well to them."Maybe tell them they may not like the way their hair and my clothes smell and that they could be at an increased risk of staining their teeth or decreased athletic performance."This story was first reported by Chelsea Donovan at WTKR in Norfolk, Virginia. 1825

HONG KONG — Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam says the government will postpone highly anticipated legislative elections by one year, citing a worsening coronavirus outbreak in the semi-autonomous Chinese city. The Hong Kong government is invoking an emergency ordinance in delaying the elections. Lam says Hong Kong's government has the support of the Chinese government in making the decision. Hong Kong has had a surge in coronavirus infections since the beginning of July. The postponement is a setback for the opposition, which was hoping to capitalize on disenchantment with the current pro-Beijing majority to make gains. Pro-democracy lawmakers have accused the government of using the outbreak as an excuse to delay the elections. 742

HAMPTON ROADS, Va. – Sitting in a classroom with a teacher and friends is what Ryan, a high school senior in North Carolina, misses.“He has mentioned how much he misses just being in the school,” said Ryan’s mom Dr. Jonna Bobzien.Ryan started virtual learning this week. This past school year, Bobzien said Ryan struggled with online learning.“It was very different,” she said. “It was asynchronous online, just a lot of watching pre-recorded information and he really struggled with that, because there is no sense of interaction, nothing really to hold the attention of the learner.”This academic year, however, he seems to be thriving.“This year, I find him, even though it’s only the first week, more excited,” said Bobzien. “His classes allow them to use avatars, so he can sit there and rock when he’s concentrating.”Ryan has autism and ADHD, so focusing his attention and sitting still for long periods can be difficult.Ryan is not unique. Many children, who are learning virtually are facing the same mundane challenge.“Just sitting in front of a computer listening to your teacher talk or watching a video can be a little less entertaining as far as value or attention-getting,” Bobzien said.Dr. Bobzien is not only a mom, but she also chairs the Communication Disorders and Special Ed Department at ODU. Additionally, she is an associate professor in special ed at the university.According to Bobzien, establishing a workspace for your child to call their own can make a difference.“Helping them to feel like they’re in that real classroom setting,” she said. “In a classroom, teachers are skilled at minimizing distraction…. When we’re at home, it can be more difficult.”Wearing headphones can help students block out distractions.Bobzien said it’s key to establish a routine and structure with some flexibility as parents navigate the role of mom and dad and teacher. She said it’s also essential to redirect a child’s attention rather than reprimand him.“Students with attention difficulties, also students with autism, they crave predictability and routine,” she said. “When you’re a virtual learner you have the opportunity to engage in some of those maybe unusual behaviors like rocking or spinning a pen that help you to focus without that sense of being pointed out.”Though Ryan’s senior year isn’t what he was expecting, there may be an upside to learning online for him and others who shy away from public attention.“With parents, may actually see, in some cases, improvements,” Bobzien said. “Sometimes, students who do have difficulties don’t like being under the spotlight as much.”Antoinette DelBel first reported this story at WTKR in Norfolk, Virginia. 2685

GREELEY, Colorado — A man who was suspected of killing his pregnant wife and two daughters in August has pleaded guilty in a deal that will allow him to avoid the death penalty.Chris Watts, 33, appeared in court Tuesday for a status hearing two weeks before he was set to appear at a Nov. 19 status conference in the case.He pleaded guilty Tuesday to all nine counts he was originally charged with in August: three counts of first-degree murder after deliberation, two counts of first-degree murder – victim under 12/position of trust, one count of first-degree unlawful termination of a pregnancy, and three counts of tampering with a deceased human body.In court Tuesday, Watts was wearing a bulletproof vest and wept between pleas. Shanann's family was sitting in the front row of the courtroom as Watts pleaded guilty.Weld County District Attorney Michael Rourke said at a news conference that followed the plea hearing that he went to North Carolina to speak with the Rzucek family -- Shanann's family -- in order to talk about the possibilities of prosecution in the case. That came after Watts' attorneys approached Rourke and prosecutors about a deal, Rourke said.Rourke said he explained the "extraordinary delays" that are seen in current death penalty cases, including the Nathan Dunlap case, and that the Rzuceks wanted a quicker resolution in the case."That, to me, was the most important consideration in deciding how to proceed with this case," Rourke said.Rourke blamed Gov. John Hickenlooper for his stance on the death penalty, which Hickenlooper has refused to carry out while he is in office, as part of the reason for going to North Carolina to discuss the plea options with Shanann's family. The Rzuceks also appeared at the news conference with Rourke and other law enforcement agencies but did not speak. Rourke said he was "saddened" he had to meet the Rzucek family under the circumstances of their daughter's and granddaughters' deaths and said he would give the family time to decide how they wanted to proceed with Watts' sentencing.Police arrested Watts late on the night of?Aug. 15 in the alleged killings of his pregnant wife, Shanann Watts, and their young daughters Celeste and Bella. After Watts initially denied that he killed them, police documents said that he admitted to doing so.Prosecutors said they believed Watts killed the three inside the family’s home in Frederick. The affidavit released in August confirmed details KMGH television station in Denver had previously reported, citing high-ranking sources, that Shanann’s body was buried in a shallow grave at the site and that the bodies of Celeste and Bella were put inside of oil and gas tanks.According to an arrest affidavit, Chris was having an affair. He also claimed that he was trying to separate from Shanann the morning of the alleged murders and that she tried to strangle their daughters when he told her of his intentions.Watts originally faced the death penalty or life in prison without the possibility of parole. The death penalty was taken off the table as part of the deal. The Weld County District Attorney's Office said the deal was made with the agreement of Shanann's family.Rourke said at the afternoon news conference that Watts was a liar and that he had falsely tried to shine the spotlight on Shanann for allegedly killing their daughters. "The spotlight shines directly where it belongs: on him," he said, adding that prosecutors did not believe that Watts could truly give them a truthful and accurate statement.Rourke said autopsy reports for Shanann and her daughters could be unsealed after the plea deal, but said they had not been unsealed as of Tuesday afternoon."He deserves a life sentence for each and every act on top of each other," Rourke said. "It was important that each of those beautiful human beings was respected in that sentence."Watts is scheduled to be sentenced on Monday, Nov. 19. 4005
