SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - When a series of suspicious fires pop up and arson is suspected, law enforcement officials across California have a handy tool that could help track down or rule out potential suspects.“In California there’s a criminal arson registry put on by the California Department of Justice,” said San Diego Police Sgt. Rick Pechin with the Metro Arson Strike Team. “What that registry does is keep track of all arson registrants in the state of California.”The registry is similar to the Megan’s Law database, but it is not available for the public to access. “It’s a law enforcement computer database only,” said Pechin.RELATED: Video shows arsonist suspected of setting Ocean Beach, Point Loma firesOnce someone is convicted of the crime of arson, they must add their name and address to the registry 14 days after they get out of jail or prison. Offenders can even land themselves on the list even if they slip up just once, like burning a pile of an ex's clothing.“Sometimes it was a onetime mistake they may have made in the heat of the moment and it got them on the list for the rest of their lives,” said Pechin.Pechin and his team of detectives with San Diego’s Metro Arson Strike Team recently used the arson registry after a number of fires erupted across Ocean Beach and Point Loma in September.In the specific case, surveillance video revealed who investigators believed was starting the fires.RELATED: Arson teams investigating five suspicious fires in OB and Point LomaWith the description of the possible suspect, a fairly tall, white man with a thin build, MAST investigators went through the arson registry searching for people known to re-offend in the area.His description helped rule out a number of potential suspects.“It’s just as important as a tool used to exclude someone as it is to include them as a possible suspect,” said Mechin.There are random compliance checks for offenders on the list.“The compliance checks are basically just to make sure they still live in the same location that they gave the local police department when they moved in that area,” said Mechin.If the offender has moved, they must notify local law enforcement of their address change.RELATED: Suspect arrested in Carlsbad dealership arson, charged with insurance fraudPechin said officers have had some problems keeping up with chronic offenders.“If we find out that they are out of compliance we will try to track them down and they can be arrested,” he said.Although the registry helped rule out a number of known arsonists In the Point Loma and Ocean Beach suspicious fires case, a suspect was never arrested.Anyone with information is asked to call San Diego Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477 or the San Diego Metro Arson team at 619-236-6815. 2766

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — When the pandemic forced San Diego's breweries to close, many turned to canning in order to continue selling their brews.Virginia Morrison, CEO and co-founder of Second Chance Beer Company, told ABC 10News anchor Lindsey Pena canned beers is now the majority of their revenue."For us, that's really our only revenue stream now," Morrison said, adding that there was already a shift in popularity from glass to cans. "We've been putting out more cans since COVID than we've ever done before. We used to have maybe three or four releases, now I think at one point we had 14 cause that's all we can do. Every bit of beer we're making we're putting in cans."Now, the aluminum supply is having a hard time keeping up with demand. Morrison said a couple of weeks ago, the Brewers Association warned members of an aluminum can shortage.Morrison said the manufacturers her brewery works with are still able to fulfill orders, but she's unsure for how much longer."We need to know and plan and also work with them really closely to figure out how to minimally impact both our businesses," said Morrison.The Aluminum Association said in a statement, "The aluminum beverage can manufacturing industry has seen unprecedented demand for this environmentally-friendly container prior to and especially during the COVID-19 pandemic."But according to the Can Manufacturer's Institute, aluminum isn't in short supply, but can makers are struggling to keep up with the demand.To make matters worse for Second Chance and other local companies, they're competing for the same supply big beverage makers use. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) --  Authorities have identified the man who died after he and another man played a consensual "punching game" in a Gaslamp Quarter sports bar early Saturday morning.Corey Poole, 27, had apparently gone out drinking at the downtown sports bar with a group of friends. The group arrived at the Jolt’n Joe’s at 379 Fourth Avenue just before 1 a.m. Police say both men were drinking when they decided to have a punching contest.Police say that Poole and a friend began "consensually sparring" and punching each other in the chest.  During the game, Poole fell to the ground and became unresponsive, the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office said.Staff at the bar performed CPR on the 27-year-old who was taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital where he died about an hour later."The decedent and a friend began consensual sparring, consisting of concurrently punching each other with closed fists on the chest," the Medical Examiner's Office said, describing what police had previously called "playing a punching game.""After receiving several punches to the chest, the decedent was struck and immediately collapsed and became unresponsive," the Medical Examiner's Office said.Officials are still working to determine whether Poole's death was an accident, a homicide or something else.Poole's friend, who remained at the location and was hospitalized for chest pain, was not arrested and it's unclear if charges against him will be filed. 1502
