BEIJING, May 15 (Xinhua) -- China has called for the EU to recognize its market economy status soon, said Yao Jian, spokesman for China's Ministry of Commerce (MOC) here Friday.     China's Commerce Minister Chen Deming will attend the 11th China-EU Summit in Prague in the Czech Republic next week, Yao said.     The summit will address China's desire to be recognized as full market economy by the EU soon, the limitation on high-tech exports to China from the EU and bilateral economic cooperation, Yao said.     China need not be recognized by any country in terms of market economy as a concept, but market economy status is a technicality that will help China receive fair treatment in anti-dumping investigations, Yao said.

The undertakings of China's ethnic culture is now at a new historic starting point, he said.     The country will step up the building of infrastructure for public cultural facilities in minority areas, by well implementing a series of cultural projects funded by central finance. He pledged to send the voices of the Party Central Committee and the State Council to millions of homes of the minority people, so as to enrich the spiritual and cultural life of ethnic groups.     Great efforts will be made to promote international exchanges of the ethnic culture, so as to increase the competitiveness and impacts of the Chinese culture, Li said.     He called for further strengthening and improving the Party leadership on the work of ethnic culture and making efforts to build up a massive and high-quality group of ethnic cultural workers.     Also present at the meeting were three members of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, including Vice Premier Hui Liangyu, CPC Central Committee Secretariat Member Liu Yunshan, and State Councilor Liu Yandong.     The conference, the first of its kind in the country, was attended by provincial officials from across the country in charge of the matter, as well as officials from some central departments concerning ethnic affairs, culture, media and cultural heritage.

CHONGQING, June 6 (Xinhua) -- Rescuers set off a blast in the debris of a landslide Saturday in an effort to open up a shaft to reach the 27 trapped miners in southwest China's Chongqing Municipality.     Rescuers ignited explosives at 8:07 p.m. at a location calculated by experts to reach the shaft where the miners were believed to be buried.     More blasts are needed as about 1.5 million cubic meters of rock and dirt slumped 600 meters from a nearby mountain Friday afternoon, covering up the entrance to the mining pit.     Experts said ventilation, food and water could not be sent into the shaft and the air underground could only support the miners for about seven days.     Experts are still busy surveying and revising plans of future blasts.     So far, 72 people, including 21 local residents, the 27 trapped miners and 18 miners who worked on the ground, two telecom company workers and four passers-by, remained missing.     The accident happened at about 3 p.m. Friday at an iron ore mining area of Jiwei Mountain in Tiekuang Township, Wulong County, about 170 kilometers southeast of Chongqing's downtown.     Chinese vice-premier Zhang Dejiang inspected the site early Saturday morning, asking rescuers to try their best to save life while avoiding secondary disasters. Experts are called on to find out the causes of the landslide.

BEIJING, April 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang Wednesday called for improved entry-exit inspection and quarantine of swine flu cases, and accelerating research on a diagnostic reagent to test for the virus.     All government departments must make public health a priority and maintain steady social order, Li said during a visit to the Beijing Capital International Airport and the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention. The United States confirmed Wednesday that a 23-month-old child in Texas had died from the virus.

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, July 16 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Foreign Minister He Yafei, head of the Chinese delegation to the 15th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit held in Egypt, said on Thursday China will continue to support NAM as always.     "As one of the developing countries, China will continue to support NAM as always for it to play a role in international affairs and speak in one voice on issues related to the common interests of developing countries," said He.     "This is the chief purpose of my presence at the summit on behalf of the Chinese government," he said in an exclusive interview with Xinhua on the sidelines of the summit.     He said that though great changes in internal and external circumstances have taken place since its birth nearly half a century ago, NAM is still an important platform for developing countries to unite and strive to become stronger, with its tenet and spirit still showing great vitality.     China, now an observer to NAM, has attached great importance to its ties with NAM and maintained good cooperation with the movement in international affairs.     When NAM was formally established in 1961, then Chinese PremierZhou Enlai and other Chinese leaders sent congratulation messages to the founding conference, expressing support for the NAM's cause of independence, peace and development and its non-alignment policy.     China became an observer to NAM in September 1992, when a Chinese governmental delegation, headed by then State Councilor and Foreign Minister Qian Qichen, attended the 10th NAM summit in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta. "This is unreasonable and unfair," he said.     He said besides the economic crisis and financial crisis on the tongues of men all over the world, the world is actually facing an unprecedented development crisis.     "Therefore, China has always urged the international community to attach great importance to the development issue when dealing with the financial crisis," the Chinese vice foreign minister said.     He said the world should increase input in development and work towards the realization of the UN Millennium Development Goals, as well as paying attention to major global issues, such as energy and food.     "If we don't do so, we will pay a higher price for our shortsightedness," He noted.     He said that at the upcoming G20 summit in Pittsburgh and the 64th session of UN General Assembly, both slated for September, China will continue to push the international community to give prominent importance to the development issue.     Chinese President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao have repeatedly pledged that China would earnestly fulfill its aid commitments to other developing nations, despite the severe difficulties it is facing due to the financial crisis, He said.     "We will continue to work together with other developing nations to strengthen unity and cooperation, weather through hardships and strive to build a harmonious world featuring lasting peace and common prosperity," He said.     During the 15th summit, NAM member states reached consensus on promoting solidarity and ratified documents on jointly addressing international and regional issues.     Founded in September 1961, NAM devotes itself to striving for the interests of developing countries all over the world. The movement now groups 118 member states, 17 observer countries and 10 observer organizations, comprising nearly two-thirds of UN member states and 55 percent of the world population.
