CAPE TOWN, South Africa, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice President Xi Jinping held talks with South African President Jacob Zuma here on Wednesday, calling for all-round cooperation and richer content of the comprehensive strategic partnership and strengthened coordination in international policies.During the talks, Xi first conveyed the warm greetings from Chinese President Hu Jintao to South African President Zuma.Xi hailed the Beijing Declaration on the Establishment of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership signed by the leaders of the two countries during Zuma's visit to China in August this year, saying that it has lifted China-South Africa relations to a new high and will guide the bilateral relations in the new era.Xi, who arrived here on Tuesday for a four-day official visit to South Africa, said the main purpose of his visit is to co-host with South African Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe the fourth plenary session of the China-South Africa Bi-National Commission (BNC).Xi said this plenary session marks a significant step in fulfilling the goals proposed by the two sides in the Beijing Declaration and BNC serves as an important platform to push forward bilateral cooperation in all areas and further implement the consensuses reached by the leaders of the two countries.He said China is willing to work together with South Africa to promote the all-round cooperation, hoping that the two sides will continue to maintain closer high-level political contacts, and further deepen pragmatic cooperation especially in the areas such as trade, economy, agricultural technology and professional training.China wishes to strengthen close coordination in key international issues with South Africa, said Xi. BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- China's top economic planner said Thursday that prices for agricultural produce and materials continued to fall from Nov. 29 to Dec. 5, with some varieties seeing big drops. Food prices monitored in 36 major cities fell 0.2 percent from the previous week, said the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC). Vegetable prices fell the most, with wholesale prices dropping for the fourth consecutive week and 16 out of 18 staple vegetables falling in price from early November, it said. Radish prices went down 32 percent, Chinese cabbage 28.6 percent, and rape 27.3 percent. Prices of lettuces, cucumbers, celery, cabbages and eggplants all dropped by more than 20 percent. Meanwhile, vegetable prices in 18 of the 36 cities were down by more than 15 percent on a monthly basis, said the NDRC. Prices in Lanzhou, capital of northwest China's Gansu Province, went down 35.8 percent, those in Xiamen, southeast China's Fujian Province, fell 31.9 percent, while in Haikou City, capital of Hainan Province in south China, prices dropped 27.2 percent. Also, prices in eight cities, including Shenyang, Shenzhen and Ningbo, were all down by more than 20 percent. Prices of production materials fell for a third consecutive week, according to the NDRC. Compared with the previous week, prices of major production materials fell 0.4 percent, up 0.3 percentage points. Urea prices moved down 1.5 percent week on week, while natural gas prices dropped 1.3 percent week on week. Prices of aluminum fell 0.8 percent, and those of rubber were down by 0.2 percent. Official figures showed that the country's grain output rose 2.9 percent year on year in 2010 to 546.41 million tonnes, marking the seventh consecutive year of growth for China's grain output. Food prices account for about a third of the weight of China's consumer price index (CPI), a major gauge of inflation, and the falling prices in farm produce and production materials are expected to ease some inflationary pressure. China's CPI rose to a 25-month high of 4.4 percent year on year in October and the hike was largely attributed to a 10.1 percent surge in food prices. BERLIN, Jan. 7 (Xinhua) -- China and Germany will ink 8.7 billion U.S. dollars worth of business deals during Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang's visit to Germany, Chinese Ambassador to Germany Wu Hongbo said here on Friday.Wu said at a press conference that Li was accompanied by some 120 Chinese business leaders on his current visit. BEIJING, Jan. 16 (Xinhua) -- China is pinning hopes on its affordable housing programs to cool its red-hot property market in the latest round of campaigns against rising asset bubbles, after the government moved to crack down on market speculation during the past year.Experts held that to increase supplies of affordable housing is the key solution to guide the market toward healthy development and help stabilize prices.During a talk show hosted by China National Radio on Dec. 26, Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao said the government will press forward housing price control and increase the supply of affordable houses for low-income earners.His words came after the government had announced a plan to build 10 million more low-income housing units this year.China is working on a more healthy system that provides housing that meets different demands, after an array of policies, including tighter credit for commercial housing, failed to produce satisfactory results in 2010.In 70 major Chinese cities, home prices rose 0.3 percent month on month and 7.7 percent year on year in November last year, which was the third consecutive month prices rose.China started the construction of some 5.9 million units of affordable homes in 2010, of which 3.7 million were completed, official figures showed.Qin Hong, a researcher with the Ministry of Housing and Urban-rural Development, said the number of affordable homes is still "far from enough", especially as more low-rent homes are needed for China's "sandwich class" families who either are disqualified for low-cost housing or cannot afford the sky-high prices of commercial housing."By attaching more importance to affordable homes and low-rent housing, it seems that the government is leading the market in the right direction," said Zhang Hanya, head of the Investment Association of China.
