DENVER, Colo. — A Colorado man is trying to find the silver lining in the wildfires by turning his photography into an opportunity to help those affected most.Jeremy Janus was driving back to Denver from Rocky Mountain National Arsenal Friday and he couldn’t believe his eyes.“I saw the smoke plume coming toward Denver and as much as it pained me I knew I had to take photos of it,” Janus said.Janus captured four photos of the smokey skies enhancing the beauty of the sunset.“This photo is called the “Nature That Binds Us,” Janus said. “While I knew these trees were going to be fine, far off in the distance there is also a lot of wildlife and nature that’s also getting destroyed.”He got into photography four years ago to heal a battle with depression and anxiety. DESCANSO, Calif. (KGTV) - Four people were seriously injured and one person is in custody following a pursuit with Border Patrol agents on Interstate 8 in East San Diego County Tuesday.Border Patrol said a blue Ford Expedition failed to yield to a marked vehicle just before 11 a.m. on I-8 near Buckman Springs Rd. The vehicle continued on, at one point reaching over 100 miles per hour, and lost control as it approached slower moving traffic. The Ford then careened off I-8 near Japatul Valley Rd., rolling down a ravine and landing on its roof.Two passengers, who were unrestrained, were ejected from the vehicle and sustained major injuries. Two other passengers sustained minor to moderate injuries. All four were taken to Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego and Sharp Memorial Hospital.The driver of the car, a 23-year-old U.S. citizen, was uninjured and tried to flee from the crash, Border Patrol said, but he was quickly apprehended and placed in Border Patrol custody.Three of the four passengers are Mexican nationals, according to Border Patrol. DETROIT, Mich. — Thousands of packages are stacked up inside a metro Detroit mail distribution center as a perfect storm of the pandemic, holiday mail volume, and what some call poor planning, which could spoil the holidays.Those mail delays are also costing local business owners dearly.A beautiful ad celebrating the hardworking men and women of the US Postal Service is airing on TV these days, as a singer croons, “I’ll be home for Christmas, you can count on me.” But for small business owners like Alicia Christensen, the post office has hit a low note.“I’m not counting on them, because I had to shut my shop down. I can’t rely on the flowers to get there before Christmas,” said Christensen.Christensen makes hand-painted aluminum wreaths and wall art shaped like flowers. In January, this artist from Wixom opened her “Bendable Blooms” shop on the website ‘Etsy.’ But the wreaths she mailed to customers on Nov. 29 got stuck “in transit” at the USPS Detroit Network Distribution Center (NDC) in Allen Park.“My Etsy shoppers are starting to contact me, wanting either their money back or wanting to know where these are at,” said Christensen.Christensen was forced to choose between losing about 0 by refunding customers, or getting bad reviews which can have a long-term impact on her business. So she temporarily halted her online sales, sent refunds, all the while anxiously watches for shipping updates of the packages stuck at Allen Park.And she’s not the only one wondering why her packages haven’t moved out of Michigan.Today the 7 Investigators counted at least 50 tractor-trailers waiting to get on to the Allen Park USPS property, not to mention the dozens of trailers stacked with packages already inside.“It has mail from wall to wall,” said American Postal Workers Union Detroit Local 295 President Keith Combs. “This is something that I have never seen in my 30 years of being a postal employee.”Combs represents Detroit-area postal drivers, clerks, and maintenance workers. Combs says the USPS restructuring ordered by Postmaster General Louis DeJoy added to the backlog caused by the pandemic and normal holiday mail volume increases. Combs says some of that restructuring means employees based in metro Detroit now report to managers out of state.“They should have started hiring these seasonal people much earlier than they did, I would say back in May, June or July-- getting prepared to bring those new people on. The tractor-trailer guys that I represent would have needed to have more trailers, even if they needed to be purchased or rented. So you can have a place to have this mail staged to be able to move smoothly from point A to point B,” Combs told 7 Investigator Heather Catallo. “I don’t think that happened. And there needed to be some thought process on how the mail flow was going to operate inside the building so that the safety of the employees was addressed and you didn’t have so much mail that there was not even walking room in some of these plants.”Combs says letters are also piled up at the USPS facility on W. Fort Street in Detroit. He says he and other union leaders reached out to management last May to prepare for the holiday “peak” as postal workers call it. Combs said their requests fell on deaf ears.“Postal employees are so diligent in what they do and feel like they need to do a great job all the time, as they do. I’m getting calls from my members and employees saying this is a problem, we need to be better. And again, they’re doing such a great job with trying to get this mail delivered. DETROIT — The Detroit Free Press/Chemical Bank Marathon is the only International Marathon in the United States.Crossing the U.S.-Canadian border is the highlight for many runners, but this year two marathoners crossed another major threshold during the 26.2-mile run.Whitney Black and Steven Phillips started the Detroit Free Press/Chemical Bank marathon engaged, and sealed the deal halfway to the finish line.What’s even more mind blowing than a mid-marathon wedding is that no one thought Black would ever be able to walk down the aisle, let alone run. She was seriously injured in an accident more than 10 years ago and then hit by a car while running 18 months ago."Twenty-one surgeries in total, (Black) was told she may never walk again," says McCann Black, Whitney's brother. "I’m just so proud of her, watching her set these goals and then blow through them has helped our family a great deal."Today, 13.1 miles into her very first full marathon, Black married her “sole mate,” Phillips. Phillips, by the way, has had quite a journey of his own, losing around 100 pounds.Friends and family waited near the 13.1 mile marker with balloons, a veil, rings and an officiant until Black and Phillips ran up to the makeshift altar."I promise to trust you even when we deviate from our grocery list," Black vowed."I will choose you every day, not because I have to, but because I want to," Phillips said.Their vows were short and sweet. The ceremony lasted about five or six minutes. DENVER, Colorado — While authorities said the suspicious package found outside the Colorado State Capitol Wednesday morning was not an issue, they are still investigating where it came from, what it is and why it was placed on the Capitol steps. Around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, authorities responded to the west steps of the Colorado State Capitol after a suspicious package was located. The steps were taped off for about half an hour while authorities, including a bomb squad, examined the scene. All nearby streets remained open.By 9 a.m., Colorado State Patrol confirmed the situation had been resolved and was a "non-issue."Trooper Gary Cutler with CSP said an American flag had been wrapped around the package and there were visible wires sticking out of it. Authorities are still investigating the package to determine where it came from and why it was placed on the steps.Cutler said they are not looking for any suspects in particular as of 10:40 a.m. 974
