SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- La Mesa Police Department announced it has dropped their charges against Amaurie Johnson, a black man whose controversial arrest was captured in a viral video last week.La Mesa Chief of Police Walt Vasquez said that "after a full review of all of the evidence in the criminal investigation" against Johnson, the police department will not seek prosecution "on any of the alleged misdemeanor charges."The announcement comes two days since the department released body camera footage showing the events that led up to an arrest video that surfaced last week.A week prior, a video surfaced showing an argument between Johnson, a black man, and a white police officer at the Grossmont Trolley Station. The officer is seen pushing Johnson into a sitting position onto a bench. Eventually, Johnson is handcuffed and told he is being charged with assaulting an officer. It's unknown what actually occurred in the first few moments of the encounter because the witness video began recording sometime after the confrontation began, and the first the 30 seconds of the video provide by police starts without any sound. On the day the body camera video was released, Vasquez said the beginning of the video is muted because of the way the body camera is activated."Mr. Johnson is relieved that the criminal aspect of this case seems to be over with (but) until we have something formal from the prosecuting agency, he is not at rest in believing that it is completely over with," Johnson's attorney, Troy Owens, said. "He has still expressed that he is shaken up and upset by what took place. He has expressed that this is not the first time an incident like that has happened, it's just the first time it happened to be captured on camera, so Mr. Johnson is adamant he wants to see change.""We do believe that the officer should be investigated for potential criminal liability, but there is also a civil aspect to this. Mr. Johnson and I are discussing our options as far as moving forward with a complaint with the city of la mesa and potentially taking this to state or federal court," Owens added. The incident sparked a large protest last Saturday in La Mesa. Thousands of demonstrators took over city's streets to protest Johnson's arrest and the department's investigation of the incident. The peaceful demonstration and marches ended when a large group gathered outside of the La Mesa Police Department and began attacking a bear cat vehicle that was brought in to help disperse the crowd. Within hours, rioters set fires to vehicles and buildings while looters ransacked various buildings throughout the business district. The protest in La Mesa followed a week of fiery demonstrations across the country stemming from the Memorial Day death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man who died after a Minneapolis police officer knelt on his neck. The City of La Mesa full statement:After a full review of all of the evidence in the criminal investigation against Amaurie Johnson, 23, the La Mesa Police Department has decided it will not be seeking prosecution of Mr. Johnson on any of the alleged misdemeanor charges 3143

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — In a move to help shed the mounting costs of a real estate deal gone wrong, the City of San Diego says it is stopping lease payments on the sharply criticized 101 Ash Street building. The city sent a letter to Cisterra Development, which brokered the real estate deal, that it will be "suspending further lease payments for the 1010 Ash Street building," starting with the Sept. 1 payment. The letter adds that the city will not be making any lease payments "until these issues are fairly resolved.""The City has lost use of the building due, in part, to direct physical loss and damage to the premises, including widespread and negligent disturbance of asbestos," the city's letter reads.RELATED: Options and possible consultation costs for vacant buildingThe property at 101 Ash St. has sat vacant in downtown San Diego for most of the last four years. As it remains empty and unused, taxpayers are paying a daily bill to the tune of ,000.The city intended to move 1,100 city employees into the building, but officials soon discovered problem after problem to the site's 19 floors. In December 2019, the city finally moved workers in, only to vacate them a month later when the county detected traces of asbestos. The building was purchased by the city in 2016 in an approved lease-to-own agreement valued at million.RELATED: City leaders vote for updates on 101 Ash Street as costs mountLast month, a letter obtained by ABC 10News showed the city was considering proposals for additional services including bare requirements to reoccupy the building, fire/life/safety recommendations, and potentially demolishing and replacing the existing building. Those services were estimated to cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.A spokesperson for the city told ABC 10News, "Many documents, including this letter, may not be final. It appears you have documents that are not final and should not be treated as such."In August, City Council leaders voted 5-4 to request monthly updates on the status of the building and costs for several next steps options by Mayor Kevin Faulconer's office, including putting millions of dollars more into the building for the needed repairs, buying out the lease, pursuing a new landlord, trying to renegotiate its lease, or walking away entirely. The last option could risk litigation and credit damage. 2365

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — It's called "cuffing season" and San Diego is the place to be for participating singles.According to Match, cuffing season is defined as "when daters find someone to settle down within the colder months … and may or may not be a relationship that lasts until the spring."Essentially handcuffing yourself to someone for the winter, before parting ways in the spring.RELATED: The San Diego single scene doesn't offer much, study saysUsing data from its Singles in America study, which Match calls the nation's largest study of singles' dating habits, the site based its rankings on more than 5,000 singles of all ages in the U.S. That study says nationwide, 70 percent of Gen Z and 63 percent of Millennials are searching for love, with about 14 percent of singles saying pressure from family or friends is the key reason they seek out a long-term relationship. The survey adds that only 9 percent of singles are looking to date casually. With that in mind, San Diego ranked as the second best city for cuffing, behind only Indianapolis. Although cuffing season occurs in the winter months, many of the best cities are located in more temperate climates:1. Indianapolis, Ind.2. San Diego, Calif.3. Denver, Colo.4. Chicago, Ill.5. Memphis, Tenn.6. Charlotte, N.C.7. San Antonio, Texas8. Columbus, Ohio9. Houston, Texas10. Los Angeles, Calif.RELATED: Dinner with a view: 9 San Diego restaurants named most scenic in AmericaBut for those looking for a temporary date to help make the end of the year less lonely, many other big cities are actually the worst place to be, according to Match:1. El Paso, Texas2. Washington, D.C.3. Detroit, Mich.4. Philadelphia, Penn.5. Fort Worth, Texas6. New York, N.Y.7. Baltimore, Md.8. Boston, Mass.9. Dallas, Texas10. Seattle, Wash. When it comes to San Diego's dating scene, the climate itself can also be called temperate.According to a previous study by Apartment List, San Diego ranked 73 overall for best cities for singles. In that analysis, only about 22 percent of respondents were satisfied with the dating scene in San Diego. Between women and men, about 17 percent of women and 35 percent of men were satisfied with dating here.Another recent study also offered clues as to San Diego's iffy state for singles. That survey, also compiled by Match, found that the average price of a date in California ran singles about 6, one of the highest in the country. Those figures were based on a dinner for two, two movie tickets, and bottle of wine. 2511

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Large churches throughout San Diego are scaling down services in an effort to control the spread of the novel coronavirus. Miles McPherson, Senior Pastor of The Rock Church, says they normally get 12 to 13 thousand people who attend services at their seven campuses. Now, attendees who show up for worship won’t be allowed inside. A message sent out to members let them know about the change. RELATED: What's the difference? Cold vs. Flu vs. Coronavirus Symptoms“All of our physical Rick Church campuses will be closed for the foreseeable future. However, we are still going to have church and it’s going to be awesome,” McPherson said. “Here’s what’s going to happen. On Sunday at our normal times – 8, 10, 12, and 6, we will be broadcasting all of our services online on all of our platforms,” he added. McPherson also said church staff are taking precautions for those inside by sanitizing surfaces and not shaking hands. The Rock Church isn’t the only religious organization making changes amid COVID-19. The San Diego Catholic Diocese says, beginning Monday, all daily Masses will be cancelled, but they will be streaming Sunday Mass in English, Spanish and Vietnamese. The Diocese adds that churches will remain open for parishioners who want to pray and seek spiritual assistance. It’s unclear how long Mass will be cancelled.
