BEIJING, Dec. 7 (Xinhua) -- A senior leader of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Tuesday encouraged Peking opera troupes to produce more superior pieces to revitalize that art.Li Changchun, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, made the remarks after watching the show "Man Jiang Hong", which told a story of Yue Fei, a hero who fought against invading troops in the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279).The show kicked off a month-long demonstration season of over 40 masterpieces of Peking Opera.Li Changchun (R), a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, shakes hands with Peking Opera artists after they stage a Peking Opera show at the National Center for the Performing Arts in Beijing, capital of China, Dec. 7, 2010.The over 200-year-old Peking Opera, which combines instrumental music, vocal performances, mime, dance and acrobatics, was recognized as an intangible cultural heritage last month by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).The Chinese government established a special fund in 2005 to support key troupes around the country to develop new scripts and adapt classic stories.

SEOUL, Nov. 11 (Xinhua) -- China is willing to deepen economic and trade cooperation and strengthen bilateral ties with the United States in a "constructive manner", a senior official from China's Ministry of Commerce said here Thursday.At a press conference held Thursday evening, Yu Jianhua, director general of the International Trade and Economic Affairs Department of Ministry of Commerce, said China does not want to get into confrontation with the United States in trade and exchange rate issues, though its second round of quantitative easing will have great impact on China and other emerging economies."On the contrary, we are willing to deepen economic and trade cooperation with the United States in a constructive manner," said Yu, who is also a member of the Chinese delegation to the G20 Seoul Summit which opened Thursday evening.He said Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao also proposed to deepen the bilateral economic and trade cooperation during a meeting with U.S. President Barak Obama in New York last September."Therefore, much common ground can be found in the China-U.S. cooperation. I am optimistic on the future of the two countries' relations," Yu said. Yu also stressed that China hopes to deal with the trade and currency issues through dialogue. These issues should not be politicized or internationalized, and bilateral issues should not develop to a multilateral one. Otherwise the existing issues would become more complicated, he said.On Thursday afternoon, Chinese President Hu Jintao met with U.S. President Obama in Seoul, the host for the G20 Summit. The two heads of state exchanged in-depth opinions on the Sino-U.S. relations and common concerned international and regional issues, and reached consensus.Chinese delegation spokesman Ma Zhaoxu told the press conference that both the two leaders agree that boosting Sino-U.S. relationship to a higher level, against the backdrop of the profoundly changing international circumstances, will not only concern the two countries but also the future of the world.

He also added that he had held talks with some countries to persuade them to change their tunes.The Cancun talks, scheduled for Nov. 29 to Dec. 10, has attracted about 25,000 participants from governments, businesses, non-governmental organizations and research institutions in almost 200 countries.

  

BEIJING, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang said more follow-up efforts should be scientifically made to ensure the Three Gorges' continuing safe operations and to make full use of the project after its preliminary construction is finished on time.Li made the remarks while chairing the 17th plenary meeting of the Three Gorges Project Construction Committee under the State Council, or the cabinet.The meeting discussed the examination and acceptance report of the project and the follow-up layouts.The preliminary design and construction of the Three Gorges were finished on time and the project reflects the good quality of the construction, in general, which worked well in flood control, while having generated more than 400 billion kilowatts of power, according to reports from the meeting.Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang (C) presides over the 17th plenary meeting of the Three Gorges Project Construction Committee under the State Council, in Beijing, capital of China, Nov. 30, 2010. Also, further efforts should be made to focus on safety supervision, measures to guard against geological disasters and building additional reservoir management systems, according to discussions at the meeting.It was a complicated effort to manage the Three Gorges project and more efforts must be made to complete various systems and improve management levels, Li said.Chinese Vice Premier Hui Liangyu also attended the meeting.More efforts should be made to summarize the Three Gorges' building experience and other projects under construction should strictly follow high standards, Hui said.

  

BEIJING, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) - China's priority in the public health sector will shift from prevention and control of communicable diseases to treating chronic diseases during the next five years.Li Bin, an official with the Ministry of Health, made the statement during a regular press conference at the ministry on Friday.Li said China had given priority to controlling communicable diseases during the 11th five year program (2006-2010), and the health authority will now focus on chronic diseases during the 12th five year program (2011-2015).According to statistics from the ministry, cardio-cerebral vascular disease has become the major threat to the health of the Chinese public. The incidence rate of chronic diseases in China has reached 20 percent, which meant 260 million people have been diagnosed as suffering from chronic diseases.It was also reported during the press conference that China had retrofitted toilets in 7.83 million rural households into more hygienic facilities as of the end of November this year.
