Hurricane Hunters have been flying in and out of Hurricane Delta continuously for days, getting a close-up look as the hurricane has re- intensified.Delta regained some of its previous fury. The hurricane, which was once a Category 4 before striking Mexico, dropped to a Category 1 on Wednesday. As the storm is set to strike the Louisiana coast on Friday, Delta has re-intensified into a Category 3 hurricane with top winds of 115 mph.As of Thursday evening, the hunters found that Delta had a 30-mile wide eye. Getting such detailed data from inside the hurricane can give forecasters a sense of the impact a hurricane will produce.There are two Air Force Reserve groups that fly into hurricanes to send back data to the National Hurricane Center.In total, the Air Force Reserve utilizes 20 WC-130J aircraft that are equipped with palletized meteorological data-gathering instruments.According to the Hurricane Hunters, “The navigator keeps track of the aircraft's position and movement and monitors radar to avoid tornadic activity. The flight meteorologist acts as flight director and observes and records meteorological data at flight level using a computer that encodes weather data every 30 seconds. The weather reconnaissance loadmaster collects and records vertical meteorological data using a parachute-borne sensor known as a dropsonde. (KGTV) - A recent break to a sewage pipe south of the U.S.-Mexico border is allowing sewage to flow freely into the Tijuana River Valley and Pacific Ocean, officials say.The International Boundary and Water Commission (IBWC) said they were alerted to the break in the Tijuana sewage pipe by Mexico authorities recently. The pipe broke Dec. 7, according to Imperial Beach Mayor Serge Dedina, though the city was notified Tuesday.IBWC officials said Wednesday, "CESPT (Tijuana Water Utility) has informed us through the Mexican Section that a rupture was discovered yesterday on the Colector Poniente in Southeast Tijuana. This rupture caused the soil above the pipe to collapse in an auto junkyard. Several sinkholes were discovered yesterday by the workers at the property and notified CESPT who then diverted the flows upstream to a stormwater collector which drains to the Tijuana River. "The IBWC estimated the flow of sewage into the Tijuana River to be at 300 liters per second, or approximately 7 millions gallons per day. IMPERIAL BEACH, Calif. (KGTV)— The San Diego Sheriff’s Department is looking for a mother of two accused of stealing thousands of dollars from her children’s school. Last week, the department’s financial crimes division issued a public warrant for 30-year-old Kaitlyn Faith Birchman for felony embezzlement.Birchman was the President of the Imperial Beach Charter School’s PTA, until she was voted off the board in March. Months before, board members said they began noticing a lack of funds.“There were thousands of dollars that hadn’t been paid,” current PTA treasurer Elizabeth McKay said. McKay told 10News, she began connecting the dots last year when vendors from previous years continued to bill the PTA saying they hadn’t gotten paid. That’s when McKay, a former Coronado Police Department Sergeant began investigating. When she contacted the bank, they told her their account no longer existed. "We were very lucky that the bank was willing to work with us to put together a paper trail,” McKay said. “The checks she had written to herself and signed herself. ATM withdrawals that weren't anywhere near Imperial beach or had anything to do with a PTA event."In March, the board confronted Birchman. They had a Sheriff’s Deputy come to the board meeting to explain exactly what “embezzlement” meant."She [Birchman] said that it was just a misunderstanding,” McKay said. “It was a lot of blind faith that they thought if she says everything is okay, then everything must be okay."At the end of the meeting, Birchman was removed from the Board.Now the Sheriff’s department is looking for the woman they said stole directly from kids, forcing the PTA to cancel students field trips and special events. “I want her to think about her own kids. She needs to at this point, make things right by taking responsibility of her actions,” McKay said. “That's the best lesson that she can teach her own children. And to make herself a better person from here."Birchman’s children no longer attend Imperial Beach Charter school. McKay said with the generous support of the community and a large donation from General Mills Box Tops, this school year, the PTA is financially stable again.
