A frightening bank scam now allows thieves to get right into your checking account, and even savvy people are falling for it.All they need is:Your cellphone numberA bank account that is compatible with the Zelle money transfer system.You assuming that it's really your bank on the phoneIt just happened to one man in Ohio, who showed how thieves can now con their way into getting thousands of dollars from your checking account.Damon Lander runs a university biology lab. As a university employee, he's not the type of person who would fall for a phone scam — until this one."The other evening, I got a phone call from what I thought was Fifth Third Bank," he said.With his caller ID showing his bank's number, Lander answered the phone, and immediately worried when the caller explained he was with the bank's fraud department."He told me they had detected fraud in my account, and they were going to help me take care of that, and set up security measures, and take care of the fraudulent charge," Lander said.It all sounded perfectly legitimate. So he did what the phone rep instructed, such as entering a verification code on the log-in page on the bank's app.The caller promised to lock the account, and issue him a new debit card. Lander thought everything was taken care of.But within a few minutes, Lander says, he got a strange text from the bank."My user ID had been removed," he said.A few minutes later, he got more alerts from the bank, and that's when he really started to worry."They changed my username, my password, my card PIN and set up a Zelle account."Scammers open Zelle accountLander had never used Zelle before, but it is a money transfer app similar to Venmo that is automatically offered to customers at almost a dozen big banks around the country, including Bank of America, Key Bank, Chase and Fifth Third.Suddenly, Lander watched helplessly as another text alerted him that his brand new Zelle account sent ,000 to a disposable cellphone number."They transferred funds to someone I've never met before," he said,Panicking, he called the bank's customer service number, where he learned the bank had not initiated any fraud call.In fact, to Fifth Third, it appeared that he had made all the changes to his account since he entered a verification code that essentially gave the keys to his account to a scammer.Why this scam is so worrisomeWhat's scary is that this scam doesn't require a thief to gain access to your ATM card or a blank check they found somewhere, as bank theft required in the past.All it takes is a text or call claiming to be from your bank's "fraud department" and they can get into your account. A family in Chicago made medical decisions and then funeral arrangements for a man they thought was their brother — only to find the man was a stranger.Rosie Brooks told CNN affiliate WBBM she got a call on May 13 that her brother, Alfonso Bennett, was in the ICU at a local hospital. Brooks rushed to the hospital with her sister, Brenda Bennett-Johnson, to see her brother.“They had him on a ventilator and they had a tube in his mouth,” Brooks said.Brooks said her brother was rarely in touch with the rest of the family, so when he turned up in the hospital it was shocking, but it wasn’t a complete surprise.According to WBBM, the sisters told the nurses at the hospital that they couldn’t identify the man because he had been badly beaten, especially in the face."They kept saying, 'CPD identified this person as our brother," Brooks said.Bennett-Johnson said a nurse told her police identified their brother through mugshots and not fingerprints because of budget cuts."You don't identify a person through a mugshot, versus fingerprints. Fingerprints carry everything," she said.The sisters say the man responded to commands by raising his hand, but never opened his eyes.Eventually, the sisters signed papers to take the man off a ventilator and gave doctors permission to perform a tracheotomy. The man went into hospice and later died.The sisters purchased a casket, a suit and made funeral arrangements for the unknown man, thinking it was their brother.Then, they got a phone call from one of their other sisters."She called my sister Yolanda to say, 'It's a miracle! It's a miracle!,” Bennet-Johnson said. "She said ‘Brenda! Brenda! It's Alfonso! It's Alfonso! It's Alfonso.’ I said, 'You're kidding!' I almost had a heart attack."Their brother was alive and well."It's sad it happened like that,” Bennett-Johnson said. “If it was our brother and we had to go through that, that would have been a different thing. But we made all kinds of decisions on someone that wasn't our family."The sisters told WBBM that the man they had been caring for was later identified at the morgue by his fingerprints and police are now looking for his relatives.A spokesperson for the hospital says the family did positively identify the man.Police say they do not usually take fingerprints unless someone commits a crime or when they go to the morgue for identification. 2379

A 2-year-old girl died Wednesday afternoon after falling into a septic tank at the Paradise Lagoons RV Resort park in Aransas Pass, Texas. The girl has been identified as Charleigh Nicole Nelson. Her father, Charlie Nelson, works in the area. He said that his wife and their three children were visiting him when the accident happened.Aransas Pass Police Department Chief Eric Blanchard said the girl's body was recovered at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, after falling 15 feet into the tank.The young girl died before rescuers could reach her. Rockport Volunteer Fire Department, Fulton Volunteer Fire Department, Ingleside Fire Department and Aransas Pass Fire Department personnel responded to the scene. No one is sure how the girl fell into the tank, but RV park residents said the girl was walking on the lid of the tank, which was not securely fastened, and it buckled under her."We're dealing with a very, very horrible, tragic accident," said Rockport Police Department Cmdr. Larry Sinclair. Child Protective Services spokesman John Lennon told KRIS 6 News, however, that there have been at least three other similar drownings involving children in the last 10 years: one in Tyler in 2014, one in Bastrop Co. in 2015, the death of a 1-year-old in Hidalgo Co. in 2016. Researchers are trying to find out as much as they can about great white sharks.After a couple of attacks involving people last year, there are new efforts to learn more about these animals. It’s moments like the incident at Nauset Beach South that shark experts are studying more closely. Video taken of the beach shows white sharks feeding on seals close to the shore. Now, researchers are launching new studies, including one looking at the feeding habits and behaviors of these sharks. “We're essentially going to be giving iPhones to white sharks to track their activity in three dimensions at a really fine scale,” explains Megan Winton, a research scientist with the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy. Winton and other researchers will be tagging sharks with devices similar to what's in smartphones. “We'll be able to identify how often they're feeding on seals. We'll be able to look for relationships with feeding activity and environmental conditions,” Winton says. The data would be given to officials to use to provide better warnings on beaches. The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy is currently pouring over data on a population study they just finished. “Based on the video footage, we were able to identify every shark we saw to an individual level,” Winton says. So far, the researchers have identified more than 300 white sharks. Winton calls it a conservation success story, thanks to protections put in place over the last few decades. “So one thing I like to remind people is that these are large, amazing animals and they're very capable predators and they're certainly deserving of our respect,” Winton says. “But they're not monsters out there, lurking our coastline menacing our beaches. They're big fish out there eating their natural prey item.” White sharks are the only natural predator to seals in the Cape Cod area, which some residents and fisherman see as a nuisance.Researchers want to see how many seals the sharks are eating and if they can impact the seal population. 2023
