Southwest Airlines says it has canceled roughly 1 per cent of its scheduled flights as it carries out inspections prompted by an engine failure that led to a passenger's death last week. About 40 flights were impacted.The affected Southwest Boeing 737 took off Tuesday morning from New York, headed for Dallas. About 20 minutes into the flight, at about 32,500 feet, a fan blade broke off the engine and shrapnel shattered a window.Jennifer Riordan, 43, and a mother of two, was almost sucked out of the broken window and pulled back inside by fellow passengers. Starbucks CEO Kevin Johnson called the arrest of two black men at a Philadelphia store last week "reprehensible" and promised to take action so that it doesn't happen again.A store manager called the police because the two men were sitting in the store without placing an order. They were arrested for trespassing. The customers said they were waiting for another man to arrive. That person arrived at the store as they were being arrested.A Starbucks spokesperson says the manager in the store who called police is no longer working in that store, although she would not comment if she is working at another location.Johnson said there would be more training for staff on the issue of "unconscious bias.""I've been very focused on understanding what guidelines and what training ever let this happen," he said. "What happened was wrong and we will fix it."Johnson had already posted apologies on the company's website. He said the company wanted to "express our deepest apologies to the two men who were arrested with a goal of doing whatever we can to make things right." He said he hoped to meet with the two men in person to make a face-to-face apology. He was in Philadelphia on Monday when he conducted the interview on Good Morning America."Starbucks stands firmly against discrimination or racial profiling," he said on the blog post.Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney issued his own statement calling the incident "appears to exemplify what racial discrimination looks like in 2018." Severe weather brought heavy rain, hail and flash flooding to some parts of Maryland.  In Frederick, flood water was so high Tuesday night it covered the tires on cars. Some residents say Market Street was so flooded it looked like a river. Police sent alerts asking residents not to drive on the roads. Emergency crews rescued six people from three vehicles trapped in floodwater.  Click below to see storm pictures from across the state:Businesses in Frederick were also impacted by the storm. The basement of the YMCA on N. Market Street was completely flooded. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Tropical Storm Iota formed Friday in the Caribbean and is expected to strengthen into a hurricane as it approaches Central America. This is the 30th named storm in 2020's record-breaking Atlantic hurricane season.The National Hurricane Center in Miami said Iota could bring dangerous wind, storm surge and rainfall to Nicaragua and Honduras by Sunday night. Iota currently has sustained wind speeds of 40 mph and it is expected to strengthen as it approaches land.The National Hurricane Center predicts Iota will bring 20-to-30 inches of rain across the Nicaragua and Honduras border, and could drop 4-8 inches of rain across portions of northern Colombia, Panama, and Costa Rica. It could wreak havoc in the same region where people are still grappling with more than 120 deaths and many more missing in the aftermath of Hurricane Eta. Eta then regained strength and soaked the west coast of Florida before moving into the southeast states and causing severe flooding in North Carolina on Thursday. (KGTV) – A construction worker was struck by a vehicle and killed along state Route 94 in Spring Valley in a crash the California Highway Patrol said is DUI-related.The collision happened just before 10 p.m. Wednesday on westbound SR-94 near Cougar Canyon Drive, CHP officials said.According to the CHP, the stretch of roadway was “an active construction zone” with the westbound side coned off. A construction worker was directing traffic when a 1996 Lincoln Town Car entered the coned area and hit him, the CHP reported.The worker, identified only as a 27-year-old San Diego resident, was rushed to the hospital but died from his injuries.CHP officials said the Lincoln’s driver, 69-year-old San Diego resident Arnold Lee Patton, was arrested on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter.Patton was booked into County Jail for felony DUI causing injury or death and gross vehicular manslaughter, the CHP reported.The incident remains under investigation. 988
