SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While families navigate this holiday season with an extra bit of care in the form of social distancing and face coverings, there are still opportunities to visit Santa Claus with the kids around the county.This year, many malls and amusement parks are keeping the tradition of visiting with Santa alive in some fashion, whether it be socially distanced in person or online.At Westfield and Simon malls throughout the county, visits will require face coverings, physical distancing, reservations, and offer hand sanitizer for visitors.But for families who aren't comfortable visiting the big man in person this year, virtual visits are available. The Otay Ranch Town Center and Chula Vista Center in the South Bay, and The Shoppes at Carlsbad in North County are offering personalized greetings and storytime with Santa. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -  A world-famous artist known for his marine life artwork and conservation stopped by his own gallery in Seaport Village Tuesday.Wyland spoke with 10News about his connection to Southern California and the lives he's changing through his artwork.Peggy Williams was visiting San Diego from Idaho this week. She said she bought her first Wyland about 30 years ago."His drawings and his work of the marine life is so real," Williams said. "It's kinda cool to pop in here today and run into him. Hey, maybe we need to protect our ocean, our environment," Wyland said.He's painted 100 ocean murals, including one still in downtown San Diego."I was inspired by Jaques Cousteau. He was like my hero," Wyland said. "I think I'm a better sculptor than painter."But he's also working on a theme called "Starry Seas," which he brought to life in front of our 10News cameras."I thought, what if Vincent van Gogh, what if he painted underwater?" Wyland said as he plopped paint directly from the tube to the canvas. "It just gives it a really organic, really nice impressionist type feel."He said his childhood helped shaped his attitude toward conservation."It was the first Earth Day. Of course, Green Peace was coming along," Wyland recalled. "When I came to California and I saw the Pacific Ocean and I saw a grey whale on that I day, I knew that was my place, that was my role."To educate and inspire the next generation of artists, Wyland is leading a national challenge."We're doing a national Wyland art challenge. It's free to every school, every student," the artist said. "With all the crazy stuff going on in the world, we need more heart and more art and I'm going to always brings that."Wyland's galleries will celebrate their 40th anniversary next year. His next big project will be 100 monuments in 100 cities - and he said San Diego is high on that list. 2124

He concluded the event with a speech, saying that those guilty of child sex abuse are "tools of Satan."While many thought the Pope's "all-out-battle" to fight sex abuse was refreshing, local survivors hoped to see more. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — While many houses of worship have moved outdoors in compliance with the latest purple tier restrictions, others say this infringes on their religious rights.Many churches have chosen to keep their doors open for indoor worship, and a San Diego attorney is helping some fight this in court.“The restrictions on houses of worship are arbitrary,” said Paul Jonna, an attorney with law firm LiMandri & Jonna LLP. “No matter what size the church is, they’re closed indoors.”Jonna represents religious leaders and churches in three separate legal battles happening in Los Angeles, Kern, and San Diego counties.“You can’t treat a church like a hair salon,” he said. “Churches are entitled to heightened protection; if you’re going to restrict the fundamental right to exercise religion, which is protected under the first amendment, you need a really, really good reason.”He believes religious services are essential, and shutdown orders on churches are not constitutional.“It’s affecting people’s mental health, it’s affecting their spiritual health, for people of faith there’s nothing more important than going to church and worshiping God,” he said.The local church represented by Jonna is South Bay Pentecostal Church. They initially took their fight to keep churches open all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court a few months ago but lost in a 5 to 4 decision.The battle isn’t over just yet; Jonna submitted a petition to the U.S. Supreme Court on Thursday calling for an emergency review of South Bay Pentecostal Church’s case.“We are quite confident that in the very near future, we’ll get a good ruling from the Supreme Court,” he said. “We also think the dynamic has changed now with Justice Barrett being confirmed to the Supreme Court.”Doctors, state and county health officials have repeatedly said indoor gatherings are dangerous during this pandemic, as COVID-19 could spread easily inside.According to San Diego Health and Human Services Agency data, in the first two weeks of November, 7,661 positive COVID-19 cases were reported.Of those cases, 4,917 people were interviewed, and 168 cases were possibly contracted at places of worship.Jonna said his client, Bishop Arthur Hodges, the senior pastor of South Bay Pentecostal Church, is doing all he can to make sure worshippers are safe in his church.“He goes above and beyond the CDC guidelines,” said Jonna. “He requires people to get temperature checks; he’s complying with the masks, social distancing, everything, ventilation systems.”Bishop Hodges tells ABC 10News that since reopening, he has seen zero COVID-19 cases due to being in his church. 2640
