THE HAGUE, Nov. 29 (Xinhua) -- As the 2012 deadline for the complete destruction of chemical weapons approaches, China Monday called for parties to demonstrate their political will and speed up the destruction process.During the 15th session of the Conference of the States Parties of OPCW, Ambassador Zhang Jun, Permanent Representative of China to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) said the Chemical Weapons Convention has been playing "an important role" in removing the threat of chemical weapons.Zhang said: "The timely completion of destruction activities constitutes a core obligation under the Convention. The destruction of chemical weapons is the most important, pressing and overriding task for the OPCW at present and in the years to come."

At the same time, China's increasing national power has provided broad market and huge potential for Singapore's continuous development.The good neighborly and mutually beneficial cooperation contributes to the interests of both people, and to the peace and prosperity of Asia as a whole, he said.Xi said China highly values the Sino-Singapore relationship and is willing to join hands with Singapore to bring the bilateral relations to a new level. He noted that the two countries should maintain high level exchanges, make full use of the existing bilateral cooperative mechanisms and projects, increase sharing of governing experiences and people-to-people and cultural exchanges, strengthen cooperation in regional and international affairs.Lee agreed with Xi on his suggestions to develop bilateral relations. He said the two countries have forged close cooperation in various areas, adding that Singapore is willing to further enhance cooperation with China in bilateral and multi-lateral areas.After the meeting, Lee and Xi witnessed the signing of the following three agreements: the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the National Heritage Board of the Republic of Singapore and the State Administration of Cultural Heritage of the People's Republic of China on Museum Cooperation; the Agreement on the Details of Implementation between the National University of Singapore and Suzhou Municipal Government (Suzhou Industrial Park Administrative Committee) on the Joint Establishment of the National University of Singapore (Suzhou) Research Institute; and the MOU on the Establishment of a Cooperative College by the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city.At the invitation of Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Xi arrived in Singapore on Sunday for a three-day official visit.

YOKOHAMA, Japan, Nov. 13 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao put forward a five-point proposal on Saturday to promote sound and fast economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region.Hu made the proposal at the 18th Economic Leaders' Meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, which opened here Saturday afternoon.Firstly, Hu asked the APEC economies to "promote balanced growth to create conditions for long-term economic development," saying they should seek balanced growth both within a member economy and among all member economies."We should increase input to help developing members achieve their full potential and narrow the North-South gap," Hu said.He called on APEC members to move toward a more rational division of labor, a more balanced financial and trade structure, more efficient allocation of resources and more equitable sharing of benefits.Efforts by APEC members in this aspect "will contribute to balanced and coordinated global economic growth," he said.Secondly, President Hu said the APEC members should "advocate inclusive growth to boost the internal dynamism of economic development."He called on all members to focus on economic development, uphold social equity and justice and adhere to the people-first principle so that all countries, regions and groups could benefit from economic globalization and development.

SEOUL, Nov. 12 (Xinhua) -- Chinese President Hu Jintao and leaders of other Group of 20 (G20) members gathered here Friday to address the challenges to the ongoing global economic recovery and work out strategies to achieve strong, sustainable and balanced global growth.President Hu, who participated in the G20 summits in Washington in 2008, in London and Pittsburgh in 2009, and in Toronto last June, is expected to expound China's stand on the major issues to be discussed at the fifth meeting in the South Korean capital, according to Chinese officials.At the Seoul summit, the leaders will discuss the world economic situation, the "Framework for Strong, Sustainable and Balanced global growth," the reform of global financial institutions, the strengthening of financial regulations, a global financial safety net and development issues.Chinese President Hu Jintao attends the inauguration of the Group of 20 (G20) Summit in Seoul, capital of South Korea, Nov. 12, 2010."The G20 summit to be held in Seoul, South Korea, is the first one of its kind to be held in an emerging economy and in Asia, hence it is of great significance to the development of the G20 mechanism," President Hu said in a written interview with South Korean media last Tuesday.Hu said the Seoul summit should focus on the following issues:-- To continue to strengthen coordination of macro-economic policies using an "in-the-same-boat" spirit and mutually beneficial and win-win principles, and to send to the market positive signals that G20 members were unified in tackling the great challenges of the world economy so market confidence could rally and the momentum of the world economic recovery would be secured.-- To push forward the reforms of the international financial system, to strengthen supervision of the international financial market, and to increase the say and the representation of emerging and developing countries in international financial institutions.-- To push forward a solution to the unbalanced development between developed and developing countries and to provide political support to the realization of UN Millennium Development Goals.-- To oppose trade protectionism and to push forward the Doha Round of World Trade Organization talks to achieve comprehensive and balanced results and its development goals.The previous four G20 summits formulated measures to deal with the international financial crisis. The summits have played an important role in returning the world economy to growth, stabilizing international financial markets and ensuring the confidence of the public and business.When they met last June in Toronto, the G20 leaders agreed on the importance of safeguarding and strengthening the recovery while laying the foundation for strong, sustainable and balanced growth, and strengthening the financial systems.At the Seoul Summit, according to the host South Korea, the G20 will build on past agreements, while introducing new agenda items that support the same fundamental goals.The G20 was established in 1999 to bring together strategically important industrialized and developing economies to discuss key issues in the global economy.It includes Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Britain, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United States, and the European Union (EU).Together, G20 members represent around 90 percent of global gross national product, 80 percent of world trade (including EU intra-trade) and two-thirds of the world's population.
