(KGTV) - An innovative young baker from Mount Helix is raising money for Parkinson's disease research in honor of her beloved grandfather, who is battling the disease.As many have done during these unusual times, Zoe Bernard took on a popular pandemic hobby."I learned how to make banana bread," says the 9 year-old.As Zoe perfected the recipe, she felt like something was missing, so she started experimenting with different ingredients, getting more bold as her creations continued to receive rave reviews from friends and neighbors. She took custom orders, adding nuts, candy bar pieces and including a couple of secret ingredients. The warm reception led her to begin selling her creations, but not to pad her own pockets. She and her mother Tina Contogenis discussed what would be most beneficial. Zoe decided to donate her profits to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Disease research.Her "Papa" Joe Contogenis was diagnosed with the disease three years ago. The tough Marine is facing a difficult battle, with a tremor in his arm, and an increasing number of hard days.Zoe and Joe have a special relationship. Joe lives five houses down from Zoe. He describes her as "an incredible young person with the biggest heart."Their neighbors have caught on to Zoe's effort, adding items to sell at a bake sale last Saturday, or overpaying and refusing to take their change.Tina says they've been overwhelmed by the response. (KGTV) — A woman was hit and killed by a trolley car in Lemon Grove Wednesday.The woman was hit by a San Diego MTS trolley at about 3:45 p.m. near the Lemon Grove Avenue and Massachusetts Ave. stop, according to the San Diego Sheriff's Department. Deputies say the woman was dragged by the trolley and later died.The cause of the deadly crash was under investigation.The MTS Orange Line was closed between the Encanto/62nd and Spring Street Stations due to the police investigation. Buses will be used between the two stations to bridge travelers to their next stop during the closure, MTS tweeted. MTS says the eastbound Orange Line will not depart from the Courthouse Station at 5 p.m., and instead will start from 12th and Imperial at 5:11 p.m. Riders waiting to catch that train should instead take the Blue Line to 12th and Imperial to transfer to the Orange Line to continue eastbound.No further information was immediately available. 968

(KGTV) - Eleven months of waiting and one month of planning led to the moment that brought everyone in the Mount Vernon Preschool classroom to tears.Private First Class in the Army National Guard Brian Salazar served his first deployment in Qatar. He's a combat engineer based out of National City. His wife Krystal painstakingly planned a reunion in their 4-year-old daughter's classroom, to surprise her. Brian's parents, among other family were inside too.His mother, Maria Salazar, said in Spanish she thought of him every time she went to sleep, every time she ate and wondered if he ate or not, if he was suffering or not, these thoughts constantly ran through her mind."I did have those moments where I really missed him and I'd cry myself to sleep knowing that he wasn't there," Krystal said.Brian was focused on his little girl Annabel, "hopefully she's as excited to see me as I am her," he said minutes before walking through the door. His mom saw him first, letting out a joyful laugh and bursting to tears. It took Annabel a few seconds to realize what was happening, soon as she realized the man in the camouflage uniform was her dad, she ran and jumped over classmates to get to him. They collapsed into a group hug and sobbed with joy.The embrace lasting minutes as they held firmly to him, affirming to themselves he's truly home. The first words came from Annabel. He asked if she missed him and she squeaked out a quiet response echoing his words.The emotion bringing everyone in the classroom to applaud.Annabel showed her dad she made an art project of a soldier who mirrored him. (KGTV) - An explosive fire broke out Wednesday afternoon at a home in Lemon Grove, Heartland Fire officials said.The flames erupted at 1783 Dupont Drive just before 4 p.m. and were accompanied by explosions, according to firefighters. When crews arrived at the scene, the home was 50 percent engulfed in flames.The Sheriff's Department told 10News neighboring homes were evacuated due to the safety risk.Crews at the scene resuscitated a cat in the front yard, 10News reporter Matt Boone said. It ran away after crews helped it.No one was injured.There was no immediate word on the cause of the fire. 628
