SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Amid sky high gas prices and commuting headaches, more San Diego commuters are turning to telecommuting.Like many, Maria Parra's day at work begins with a cup of coffee.  The difference is her coffee is brewed in the kitchen at her City Heights home, feet away from her office.  Parra, who does coding for Sharp Health, started telecommuting in 2010."It only took me about a week to realize how great a situation it was," said Parra.RELATED: How to convince your employer to allow you to telecommuteParra says she saves thousands every year in commuting costs, from gas to wear and tear on her car.   Gone are those rush hour headaches."The time you are saving and the stress you are alleviating is great," said Parra.According to SANDAG, the average San Diegan spends the equivalent of 22 work days every year commuting to work. For full-time telecommuters, that's like getting back 22 vacation days.  Those benefits are now fueling a local telecommuting boom.  According to just released numbers from Carlsbad-based Global Workplace Analytics, about 65,000 San Diegans now work at least half their hours from home.  That's up nearly 190% in the past decade.  Nationally, that increase is 140%.Kate Lister is president of Global Workplace Analytics, which develops flexible workplace strategies for employers.  She says more and more employers are taking a close look at telecommuting."Employers can save big money in terms of productivity, lower turnover, lower absenteeism, and of course, real estate savings.  They don't have to have a seat for every one," said Lister.Among those employers is Sharp Health, boasting more than 670 employees in its telecommuting program, a 16.5% increase from the year before.RELATED: Longer drive could save San Diegans on housingLister says in all, 4.6% of the San Diego workplace telecommutes, which ranks among the top 10 cities in the U.S.  1964

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- An hours-long SWAT standoff involving a domestic violence suspect in Point Loma came to an end Thursday night. Police were called to the 2200 block of Caminito Pescado around 4:45 p.m. after receiving a call from a neighbor. Police say a woman who lives in the home ran to the neighbor’s house reporting that she and her 71-year-old husband got into a fight. Police and SWAT responded and found the man on the second floor balcony of the condo. After trying to get the 71-year-old down from the balcony, police say he ran inside before a gunshot could be heard coming from the home. Neighbor Jenny Taylor spoke with 10News on FaceTime, saying she could see officers lined up with their weapons drawn from her patio. She said she was ready for the worst, "let me move it so we can at least duck down really quick and hit the floor and run inside the house, so we left the screen door open and moved all the chairs out of the way."It was hours before police and SWAT packed up.Authorities later found the man dead inside. According to police, records show authorities had never been previously called to the home. An investigation into the incident is currently underway. If you're contemplating suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). There is also a crisis text line. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After serving in the Korean War 67 Years ago, a San Diego veteran is preparing for the trip of a lifetime with Honor Flight San Diego. Chuck Willey says he's looking forward to experiencing the Washington, D.C. memorials with other veterans. "He mentioned about being accepted to the Honor Flight. But said the only problem is I don't have a uniform, and I said oh Chuck, I can help you with that!" said Patricia McKeon Suter, a relative of Willey. She put a call out for help on one of her Facebook groups - Buy Nothing Navajo, San Diego, CA - asking if anyone had a Korean War-era dress. Three days later, a neighbor answered her call."The reason why she really wanted to do it is her grandfather served in the Korean War in the Marines, and she didn't get to honor him, he passed away a while ago, and this was her way of honoring him. It brought tears to my eyes, which it's doing right now," said McKeon Suter. The neighbor found a uniform in Willey's size, pants, and a jacket.Willey's daughter continued the quest on eBay, where someone ultimately donated a hat and tie after learning Willey's story."Overwhelmed, just very, very thankful for all the help," said Mckeon Suter.Willey was also overwhelmed by the generosity of strangers. "I can't believe that people would do that," said Willey.Willey says he is proud of his service and grateful he'll once again be able to wear a uniform for this special occasion. Honor Flight San Diego will return on Sunday, October 6 to the San Diego International Airport; the public is invited to welcome them home:Where: Terminal 2When: Arrive by 3:20 p.m. (one hour ahead of flight)Carpooling is recommended 1681

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - A woman who was hit by a car in Normal Heights says she’s been left stranded for six months after her wheelchair was damaged in the crash. Now, replacing it is a challenge. Pet photographer Tamandra Michaels’ love for the camera came to a pause after she was hit from behind while crossing the street.“It sent me flying," Michaels said. The wreck damaged her custom wheelchair, which cost more than ,000.“It slightly bent the frame to where one of the front wheels don’t quite hit the ground.” Michaels says Geico, the insurance company of the woman who hit her, won’t replace the wheelchair after giving them proof the chair must be replaced.“Months went by, they said they did some research and that the chair should only cost between ,500 to ,100," said Michaels. Michaels says without being able to work, she can’t afford to pay the difference.“It's incredibly frustrating. They’re treating it like its a car or maybe even a bike. This is like my legs; this is my life. I don’t understand why they don’t get that."Michaels says she is now seeking help from an attorney. 10News reached out to Geico’s claim department, but they said they could not release any details about the claim.  1251
