Trump has eyed several people to replace Haley, including Ric Grennell, the U.S. ambassador to Germany; Jamie McCourt, the U.S. envoy in Paris; and Kelly Craft, the ambassador in Canada. One person initially considered a leading contender, former deputy national security adviser Dina Powell, withdrew from consideration early in the process. Trump has repeatedly told aides he wanted a woman to fill the role.Nauert, who came to government from Fox News, served as State Department spokesman for both Rex Tillerson and Mike Pompeo but has enjoyed a closer relationship with Trump's second secretary of state than she did Tillerson, who was privately skeptical of her close ties with the West Wing. Her elevation to a top diplomatic role underscores the importance Trump has placed on having his top aides also serve as television surrogates. Nauert has briefed regularly from the State Department podium and had a long career in television news before that.Still, as a diplomat she lacks experience. Previous holders of the U.N. ambassador position — including current national security adviser John Bolton — came to the role with years of foreign policy experience. Nauert served briefly as Undersecretary for Public Diplomacy from March until October.Nauert would face what could be a contentious confirmation hearing, with Democrats quizzing her on her qualifications for the post.Instead, Nauert comes with something perhaps more valuable in the Trump administration: loyalty and a willingness to defend the President. That loyalty has at moments caused friction at the State Department. As Tillerson's relationship with Trump began to deteriorate in his final months, he privately told allies he thought she was more loyal to the West Wing than the State Department. Chief of staff John Kelly informed Tillerson his time in the top diplomatic post was expected to end while on a multi-country sweep through Africa. Trump later announced his firing on Twitter. The U.N. ambassador role is viewed by some as a launching point for higher-profile positions. Both Bolton and Susan Rice, who served in the post under President Barack Obama, eventually became White House national security advisers. The position is based in New York, so is also viewed as having less direct oversight than a high-level post in Washington.Nauert's move to the United Nations would take her out of the running for other roles in the West Wing, which has struggled at times to fill key positions and went without a communications director for months. Nauert was widely seen as the front-runner to replace Sarah Sanders as White House press secretary when she leaves which she is expected to do in the coming months after more than a year in the role, according to multiple officials. 2760

They reportedly told Justice they would surrender the dog to her as long as it wouldn't cost them any money. Dr. Lucretia Greear, of Woodhaven Animal Hospital, said the dog, Jake, would have died without intervention. "He's moving better now because he's on pain medication," said Dr. Greear, who also showed Jake's X-ray. Jake didn't have bad hips from dysplasia. His pelvis was broken in two places, according to Dr. Greear, who added that Jake actually appears to only be about 10 years old, not 18. Jake's former owners said Monday that many years ago his back end was injured when he was stepped on by other dogs. However, Dr. Greear believes the fractures to Jake's pelvis happened in the last four to six weeks, and she said he was either hit by a car or someone struck him hard enough to fracture his pelvis. When asked, Jake's former owner said he's never been hit by a car and they denied anyone ever hitting him. Late Monday afternoon, Riverview police acknowledged that on May 12 they were called to the house where Jake lived to investigate a "dog malnourished."A ticket was issued but the incident report does not indicate what the ticket was for or what, if any, action was taken to help the dog.Greear said Jake doesn't have much arthritis. He wasn't walking because he was in pain. And she said Jake wasn't eating the dry dog food that was in the yard because his teeth are in horrible condition. Dr. Greear called it one of the worst cases of dental disease she's ever seen. "He's moving better now because he's on pain medication," Dr. Greear said. The 1572

This (storm) hit so hard and so fast that the different aspects of human nature is going to come out, and people are going to do anything to survive, Panama City resident Christopher Donahue told WEAR.There were also reports of a fatal shooting in Panama City, which authorities said is under investigation.Gov. Rick Scott said in his 6 p.m. update Saturday more than 1,800 law enforcement officers have been sent to impacted areas in the Panhandle and Big Bend along with more than 400 ambulances with over 700 staff. The Florida National Guard has activated 4,000 soldiers and airmen to help with search and rescue, clearing roads and delivering supplies. Two food and water distribution centers have opened, and others are expected, officials said.Scott tweeted Saturday evening that 142,000 gallons of water and nearly 174,000 ready-to-eat meals were delivered to affected communities, with food and water being airdropped to the hardest hit counties.Scott said Saturday evening there are 15 shelters open across the state and that 11 counties across Florida are eligible for individual assistance from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). He also said 243,513 people are without power in Florida. With the death toll from the storm rising to at least 18, the number of those still unaccounted for remains unclear."Unfortunately, we're probably still going to find people in the coming weeks," Panama City Fire Department Battalion Chief David Collier told CNN.The number of fatalities could rise into the double digits in Panama City and surrounding communities alone, Collier said."We're not able to gain access to all areas at this point in time," he said. "The quick response teams ... from around the state and nation have done a quick, rapid search of the area, have tried to clear homes the best they can."In Panama City, the fire department has received more than 200 calls for checks on residents, but there are no resources to perform them, Fire Chief Alex Baird said. Completing the checks could take days or weeks. With no power and with spotty cellphone service, residents still unaccounted for could be trapped in isolated areas, according to Baird. Scott said more than 2,000 of his personnel are working to restore cell service and communication in the impacted areas. In Lynn Haven, a city north of Panama City, Mayor Margo Anderson told CNN affiliate News 13 Orlando through tears that she and the city manager almost died in the city hall building during the storm."I want the people here to know they are loved. We are going to build this city back. It's going to be beautiful, and now we have about two months before our power grid's going to be back up. Probably a few days before we have water, and when we have water it's not going to be drinkable water," Anderson said. 2805
