RANDALLSTOWN, Md. — The current wave of COVID-19 continues to put a strain on doctors and nurses.There are concerns that the rapidly increasing number of hospitalizations and patient deaths is putting the mental health of health care workers at risk.After dealing with the coronavirus for nine months, with doctors and nurses already stretched thin, they brace themselves for what another wave of COVID-19 will bring.An intensive care unit nurse at Northwest Hospital in Randallstown, Maryland, said “at the height of this pandemic, we were essentially in survival mode, going to work everyday with this new virus, being fearful. Fearful that we're going to take this home to our families, not really knowing enough about it to know are we really protected with what we're doing.”The ICU nurse admits the ongoing pandemic doesn't just have frontline workers concerned about their physical health, now there's also a concern for the state of their mental health.“The patients are sicker, than our traditional, regular ICU patients that come in, which in itself has taken a toll because we are exhausting all medical intervention possible and as a nurse, putting your heart and soul into taking care of and trying to save a patient and we fail,” the nurse said.COVID safety protocols leave patients to die alone, without anyone by their side except for a nurse.“You know, I’m going into a room, to hold a hand, or to hold an iPad and let a family say goodbye. That probably has been the toughest part for me. As an ICU nurse, I’m used to that. I’m used to hearing from patients and families at end of life but not to this capacity that we're seeing with the virus. Not these numbers of patients. And also not being the only contact that they're getting,” the nurse said.A recent survey by the non-profit organization Mental Health America, found the pandemic is taking a toll on the mental health of doctors and nurses.Mental Health America president and CEO Paul Gionfriddo said “the majority of them are experiencing conditions like stress and anxiety but more than half are questioning whether or not they're in the wrong profession at this point. Three-quarters are concerned about their kids and whether or not they're going to physically, negatively affect their kids or even emotionally whether or not they're giving the support to their children and families that they need.”Gionfriddo worries about the long-term effects the pandemic will have on frontline workers.“Some people will develop PTSD, others will develop psychosis, others will develop depression. The whole range of mental health conditions will emerge out of this pandemic among people who were healthy going into it, and who would have remained healthy if they were not put under the stress and pressure that they've experienced in trying to provide care to others during the pandemic,” Gionfriddo said.Considering the increasing level of stress from dealing with life and death on a day-to-day basis, some may wonder what keeps this ICU nurse going to work everyday instead of calling out or just calling it quits.“I took an oath as a nurse, and I think that's instilled in a lot of us. We have that responsibility, to the community and our families,” the nurse said.She decided to become a nurse and she said it's in her family. Recorded by another driver Wednesday afternoon, a video shows two vehicles - a car and a minivan - heading down Kanner Highway in Stuart, Florida.We don't see what leads up to it, but the car appears to be driving slowly in front of the minivan - even jumping in front of the van when the driver tries to change lanes.The two cars get to the intersection of US 1 and Kanner.Almost immediately, three men get out and brawl in the middle of the busy road."Bystanders were involved trying to break them up, and the potential of those bystanders also getting hurt during this is increased," says Jeff Kittredge with the Stuart Police Department.Kittredge says the men in the car, Eric Gerstmann and Sean Gerstmann of Port Saint Lucie, drove away at the end the fight but were arrested just down the road."Not only are you putting yourself in danger, but you're also putting other motorists in danger with aggressive driving," he says. For many folks, it shows we still have a long way to go."A lot of people are fueled off of hate and anger, and not love and passion," says resident Victor Diodato."It just shows how little respect we have for each other," says resident Joseph Neuroth. President-elect Joe Biden’s favorability rating has risen six percentage points since the election while President Donald Trump’s has slipped three points, according to a recent survey from Gallup.The survey talked to Americans between November 5-19, during a time when the Trump campaign’s legal team was filing lawsuits and challenging the general election results in several states. The results were published after Thanksgiving. The survey asks people if they have a favorable opinion of the person.Biden’s favorability is at 55%, the highest it’s been in the Gallup survey since February 2019 right before he declared his presidential campaign. Trump’s favorability is at 42%, down from 45% right before the November election.The highest favorability rating President Trump has received during his presidency was 49% in April as the country was in the initial stages of the coronavirus pandemic.The post-election results appear to be most impacted by changes in responses from people who identify as Republican. Biden’s favorability among this group grew from 6% to 12% since the election, while Trump’s rating among this group dropped from 95% to 89%.Gallup says Biden’s bump in favorability is in line with trends they have seen after presidential elections since 2000.Meanwhile, ratings for losing presidential candidates in Gallup’s poll have been mixed over the years; John McCain and Mitt Romney saw a higher rating post-election, and Hillary Clinton’s rating was unchanged after the 2016 election. 1517

"We will begin our quarantine and recovery process immediately. We will get through this TOGETHER!"The president confirmed late Thursday that Hope Hicks, a senior White House staffer who serves as counselor to the president, was infected with the coronavirus."The White House medical team and I will maintain a vigilant watch and appreciate the support provided by some of our country’s greatest medical professionals and institutions," Dr. Sean Conley, physician to the president, said. "Rest assured, I expect the President to continue carrying out his duties without disruption while recovering and I will keep you updated on any future developments."While Conley is optimistic for the president's recovery, according to CDC guidance, given Trump's weight and age, he is at an enhanced risk of complications from the coronavirus. "Hope Hicks, who has been working so hard without even taking a small break, has just tested positive for Covid 19. Terrible! The First Lady and I are waiting for our test results. In the meantime, we will begin our quarantine process!"
