RAMONA, Calif. (KGTV) — Two people were killed and a third person was seriously hurt in a head-on collision in Ramona on Wednesday.CHP said at about 12:15 p.m., a 56-year-old woman was driving a 2016 Ford Focus northbound on Mussey Grade Road, south of Mahogany Ranch Rd., at a high rate of speed. At the same time, an unidentified woman was driving a 2017 Subaru Impreza southbound on the same road. For reasons that are unclear, CHP said the driver of the Focus lost control of her vehicle and veered into the opposite lane, colliding head-on with the Impreza. The driver of the Focus and a male passenger in the Impreza died at the scene, CHP said. The driver of the Subaru was taken to Palomar Medical Center with major injuries.CHP says they believe both occupants in the Subaru were wearing a seat belt, but the driver of the Ford was not at the time of the crash. It's unclear whether alcohol or drugs played a factor in the crash. 943

Protests erupted late Monday on the campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, after police fatally shot a student who allegedly had a knife. The violence took place around the time of a planned vigil for the student, Scout Schultz, 21, who was killed Saturday. Video on social media showed a police car in flames.Georgia Tech police urged students to stay inside and lock their doors because of "violent protests on campus."The fatal encounter on Saturday happened after police responded to a 911 call at 11:17 p.m. reporting a suspicious person on campus. The caller said the person -- described as a white male with long blond hair, white T-shirt and blue jeans, possibly intoxicated -- was holding a knife and possibly a gun.The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said Schultz made that 911 call. 819

Republican candidate Leslie Gibson has dropped out of the race for Maine's House of Representatives following backlash from controversial comments he made about two student survivors of the Parkland, Florida, school shooting."I am not walking away with my head hung low. I am walking away with my head held high," Gibson told the Portland Press Herald on Friday, saying he had made the decision after conversations with family and friends."It's the best thing for everybody," Gibson added. The Maine candidate drew outrage after posting insulting tweets about two Parkland students -- Emma González and David Hogg -- in light of their national gun control efforts."There is nothing about this skinhead lesbian that impresses me and there is nothing that she has to say unless you're a frothing at the mouth moonbat," Gibson tweeted of González, according to the Press Herald. He reportedly called Hogg a "bald-faced liar." The Twitter account used to make the remarks appears to have been deactivated and Gibson's campaign account has been set to private.Gibson later apologized to González, the Press Herald reports."I would like to extend to you my most sincere apology for how I addressed you," he said. "It was wrong and unacceptable. You are doing work that is important to you. I would like to extend my hand in friendship and understanding to you."Attempts by CNN to reach Gibson for comment were unsuccessful.Republican state Sen. Amy Volk and a number of Maine Democrats had called on Gibson to end his campaign. The comments also prompted two opponents -- one Republican and one Democrat -- to enter the race for Maine's 57th district."I never thought I would run for office, and I was perfectly content with just remaining a member of the community, but after reading Mr. Gibson's comments I thought that the people of Greene and Sabattus deserved a representative who will respect people and try to work through their differences to make our lives better," Eryn Gilchrist said in a statement from the state Democratic Party."After those recent unfortunate comments, I couldn't sit back," Republican candidate Thomas Martin Jr. said, according to the Press Herald. 2182

President Trump's Treasury secretary says most middle income Americans will get a tax break under the Republican plan brewing in Congress. But he stopped short of saying that break would be for all of them."By simplifying the code, we're putting everybody on a level playing field," Steven Mnuchin told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union" on Sunday. "For most people -- and, again, it may not be 100 percent, but by far the majority -- both the House and Senate version provide middle-income tax relief."Mnuchin said that assessment is based on "hundreds if not thousands" of tests the Treasury has run on the bills.Mnuchin's comments came after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell walked back his claim?that "nobody in the middle class is going to get a tax increase" under the Senate's version of the reform plan.On Friday, McConnell told the New York Times that he "misspoke."Mnuchin also defended the tax plan from critics, including Larry Summers, the Treasury secretary under President Bill Clinton. Summers called Mnuchin's tax cut estimates "irresponsible."Mnuchin on Sunday called those comments "unfortunate.""There are lots and lots of economists that come out and support our claims," he said. "We've been completely transparent. Different models will show different things."Mnuchin added that a middle-class tax hike is not what Trump wants. He said lawmakers will "fine tune" the plan before it heads to Trump for a signature.Tapper also asked Mnuchin about Trump's?claim?that the tax reform bill will bring "the largest tax cuts in the history of this country.""We've tried to find a way that this is true, but it's not," Tapper said, pointing to research that shows the tax break would rank, at most, as the 3rd largest in American history.Mnuchin qualified the president's statement, saying, "This will be the largest change since President Reagan."He also singled out the proposal to slice the corporate tax rate from 35% to 20%."If that's not the biggest tax cut to make our businesses competitive, what is?" Mnuchin said. 2102
