SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A woman attacked her father with a metal pipe during an argument today, according to police.The attack happened around 1:45 p.m. at a home on Lenox Drive near Elwood Avenue in Emerald Hills, according to San Diego Police Officer Sarah Foster.It started as a verbal altercation before the 31-year-old woman picked up the pipe and hit her father several times in the face and head, Foster said.The man had to be taken to a hospital and his daughter was arrested. 491

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Authorities Thursday publicly identified a 21-year-old man who was killed when the sports car he was driving crashed off a South Bay freeway connector.Jose Cruz Perez of Logan Heights lost control of the blue Nissan 350Z coupe while trying to merge onto eastbound state Route 54 from northbound Interstate 5 in National City at high speed shortly before 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.Alerted by a witness who saw Perez's vehicle veer off the connector and plunge down a steep embankment just south of the Sweetwater River, California Highway Patrol officers searched the area but were unable to find the car or driver.About four hours after the accident, a worker at a shipbuilding yard alongside the freeway ramp found the wrecked Nissan in a mud pond with Perez's body partially ejected from the driver's side door, the CHP reported. 910

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Drug use among teens booked into San Diego Juvenile Hall reached its highest rate since 2000, with 62% of those interviewed testing positive for an illicit substance last year, up 4% from the previous year, according to a report released Monday.According to the San Diego Association of Governments, 57% of 109 juveniles interviewed in 2019 tested positive for marijuana, also the highest rate since 2000 and an increase of 2% compared to 2018.Ninety-two percent of interviewees reported trying marijuana, compared to 86% for alcohol and 70% for tobacco, according to the SANDAG report. Overall, 93% of juveniles reported trying some kind of illicit substance.Nearly 60% of respondents also said marijuana was the first substance they had tried, compared to 27% for alcohol and 12% for tobacco.Overall, those who had used marijuana, alcohol and tobacco reported getting started at or before age 13 1/2, on average.Just over three-quarters of the youth interviewees reported having tried vaping, and 49% reported vaping at school. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Firefighters extinguished several rubbish fires today in alleys in the Logan Heights neighborhood, police said.The fires were discovered at 12:32 a.m. in the 1900 block of Kearney Avenue and in the 2000 block of Julian Avenue. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A power outage left nearly 3,200 homes and businesses without electrical service Thursday morning in Del Dios, Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Penasquitos and San Pasqual.The blackout, which initially affected 3,173 utility customers, began shortly before 6:30 a.m., according to San Diego Gas & Electric. By midday, repair crews had restored electrical service to all but 209 of the affected addresses, SDG&E advised.
