KUNMING, Nov. 30 (Xinhua) -- More than 10,000 new HIV infections were reported in southwest China's Yunnan province during the first 10 months of this year, bringing the total number of HIV carriers and AIDS patients in the province to more than 90,000, local AIDS prevention authorities said Wednesday. As of Oct. 31, a total of 93,567 HIV infections had been reported in the province, with the disease claiming 14,340 lives, according to statistics from the Yunnan AIDS Prevention Bureau. The number of HIV infections contracted through sexual contact has been rising and sexual contact is now the main cause of the disease's proliferation, said Xu Heping, director of the bureau.Of the province's infected population, 45.8 percent contracted the disease through sexual contact, while 37.3 percent contracted the disease through intravenous drug abuse, according to the bureau.Sexually transmitted infections accounted for 77.3 percent of new infections during the January-October period, up from 71.3 percent during the same period last year, according to the statistics.Xu said this year's new infections mainly occurred in people between the ages of 20 and 39, accounting for 60.8 percent of the total.Infections among rural residents and unemployed people accounted for 55.3 percent and 18.6 percent, respectively, of this year's total, according to Xu.Lu Lin, director of the Yunnan disease control and prevention center, said migrant workers are particularly vulnerable to the disease due to their nomadic nature and lack of knowledge about the disease.China currently has 346,000 registered HIV carriers and AIDS patients, although the actual number is predicted to hit 780,000 by the end of this year, according to an expert panel consisting of members of China's Ministry of Health (MOH), the World Health Organization and UNAIDS.
BEIJING, Jan. 1 (Xinhua) -- State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), the country's largest power supplier, said Sunday it has put to trial operation a cross-border electricity transmission project in northeastern Heilongjiang province to supply Chinese with Russia's electric power exports. The electric power SGCC purchased from Russia began reaching Chinese customers late Saturday night after the completion of the direct-current back-to-back networking substation, or called "the trans-Amur project" by Russians, SGCC said in a statement on its website. The trial operation will last 168 hours, SGCC said in the statement. With a transmission capacity of 750 mega-watts, the electricity transmission project is China's biggest cross-border power line, according to SGCC."The implementation of the project will gain experience for the expansion of Sino-Russian energy cooperation and help promote the economic development for both countries," SGCC said. The project is also part of the Sino-Russian energy and trade cooperation.Russian Deputy Energy Minister Andrei Shishkin said in June 2011 that the transmission project would increase Russia's power supply to five or six billion kilowatt hours of electricity to China and Russia intended to increase its electricity supply to China in the coming years.Russian companies plan export 60 billion kwh of electricity to China by 2020. Power plants will be built along its border with China to reduce power transmission losses and reduce transportation costs. Also on Sunday, an oil pipeline linking Russia's far east and northeast China witnessed its one year anniversary of operation, as operators announced an accumulated 15 million tonnes of oil had been transported into China in 2011.
SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- Hewlett-Packard(HP) on Thursday announced that it will keep its personal systems group ( PSG) and continue to sell personal computers."HP objectively evaluated the strategic, financial and operational impact of spinning off PSG. It's clear after our analysis that keeping PSG within HP is right for customers and partners, right for shareholders, and right for employees," Meg Whitman, HP president and chief executive officer, said in a statement. On Aug. 18, former CEO Leo Apotheker said HP was considering spin off the PC business, which drove shares of the company to plunge 20 percent the following day.HP then said its board of directors has authorized the exploration of strategic alternatives for the PSG, and it will consider a broad range of options that may include a full or partial separation of the PC business through a spin-off or other transaction.According to HP, the review so far revealed the depth of the integration of its PC division that has occurred across the company's key operations including supply chain and procurement. In addition, it indicated that the division has made significant contributions to HP's solutions portfolio and overall brand value."Finally, it also showed that the cost to recreate these in a standalone company outweighed any benefits of separation," HP said in a press release announcing the latest decision.HP is now the world's largest PC-maker with revenues of the PC division totaling 40.7 billion U.S. dollars for fiscal year 2010, according to figures from the company.A recent report from market research firm Gartner found that in the third quarter of 2011, HP's PC shipments grew 5.3 percent year- on-year, faster than the industry average of 3.2 percent, and its share in global PC market actually increased slightly to 17.7 percent.Though the PC division has a lower margin, the position and scale as the world's No. 1 PC-vendor gives HP advantage to negotiate with other suppliers and helps its other businesses, analysts said. The announcement to keep the PC unit is seen as the first major move of HP under new CEO Whitman, who took the job just over a month ago after replacing Apotheker on Sept. 22.
