Many platforms are trying to make sure what you're searching for, what you're seeing and what you're reading is factual.Pick a platform or a search engine and it's not hard to find what you're looking for.“Remember in 2016, no one took social media seriously on either side,” said Jason Mollica, a professor of communications at American University in Washington DC.He teaches digital and social media analytics and public relations. He analyzes just how we communicate. These days, a lot of our conversing is over the internet. As the election inches closer, Mollica and his students are watching and discussing what's happening on social media platforms.“It’s not that much different but the stakes are higher, not from the perspective of voting but as in what these socia lnetworks are trying to do or not do it the wake of what happened in 2016,” Mollica said.Take Facebook for instance. The social site has been under scrutiny and they know it. Mark Zuckerberg posted from his own account about what changes the site is making, including informational posts about voting and how and where to vote. Facebook will block new political ads in the final week before the election, and they say they'll be working with officials to remove misinformation about voting.There are also rules against COVID-19 threats surrounding voting.Twitter is also taking a stand. Mollica says you might see something trending but if there's a problematic post, the original content will likely be pulled.“We’re not gonna allow this content to continue is something is shared by Joe Biden or Donald Trump or any political party,” Mollica said. “They’re going to make sure it’s taken down because they want to mitigate the negative news or the false news that comes out from certain accounts.”Twitter says it has election teams focusing on integrity, and the company is launching initiatives to help users find original sources of information. You'll also be able to report misleading information.“This isn’t censorship,” Mollica said. “This is something where social networks are saying, ‘Look, we understand we’re a news cycle.’ At least from Twitter’s perspective, they share news. They want to be a place where people get news. They’re looking… from a standpoint of you wouldn’t see that on a television station necessarily, why should you see that on twitter?”And Google, the site many turn to to search for anything and everything, has modified its autocomplete policies, removing predictions that could be viewed as claims for or against a specific party. And that is no easy task.“Think of a search giant like google. They can’t pull content off the internet but they can definitely take key words from search results and say we’re not going to show those to people,” Mollica said.Donald McLaughlin, co-founder of the Denver Based CP-Cyper said, it’s not that internet content is missing. Google has just made information harder to find. McLaughlin says, however, it doesn't mean that you can't find it on other search platforms.“Use a different search engine,” McLaughlin said. “There is Bing, DuckDuckGo, a few others that are meant to be less persuasive, less filtered that will give you exactly what you search for versus what they want you to see or what they think you want.”“So, Google trying to mitigate it somehow is a great start but you think about it’s basically putting a small cork in a huge hole and it’s still leaking and you can’t really stop it,” Mollica said.Most experts would agree it’s unfortunate that it has come to this.“We’ve gotten to a place now where misinformation does spread like wildfire on social media. People will sensationalize to get likes to get people to follow them and really doing the research to vet whether something is true or not is very important,” Mollica said.He says that's true whether you're buying a car, or voting. After years of battling to stay near his family, a popular restaurant manager on Palm Beach is preparing to be deported to Mexico.Francisco Javier Gonzalez -- known by the community as Javier -- is saying farewell to the countless customers and friends he's made on the island, especially at Pizza Al Fresco — located about two miles from President Trump's property at Mar-a-Lago — where he has worked for nearly 10 years.In just a few weeks, he has been ordered to appear at a U.S. Immigration office in Miramar, where his attorney said he is likely to be taken into custody and deported.The 36-year-old moved to Palm Beach County from Mexico 20 years ago as a teenager to be near his brother, using what he thought was a valid visa.He says it wasn't until he returned to visit his parents in Mexico some years later that he learned the visa wasn't valid. After that, he said he returned to the country illegally to continue the life he established in South Florida, which has complicated his case with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement  (ICE) officials.Gonzalez has no criminal record. He's married to a U.S. citizen and has three young American-born children ages 6, 8 and 11.Over the years. Gonzalez says he's checked in regularly with immigration authorities as he works to become a citizen.However, with recent crackdowns on illegal immigration by federal authorities, Gonzalez says he knew his time was running short.When he checked in with ICE officers on March 17, he was told unless he left the country on his own, he would most likely be taken into custody at his next check-in.Now, Gonzalez is preparing for what may come next. The restaurant manager bid farewell to the community during a town hall meeting on Tuesday.Right now, Gonzalez's lawyer is in Washington, D.C. to meet with Senator Marco Rubio, Congress and customs officials to fight for his case.There's also a petition on Change.org, with nearly 40,000 signatures urging border patrol to stop the deportation.  2045

Amazon is pulling Washington Redskins merchandise from their online marketplace.The announcement comes after the team indicated it was reviewing a possible name change, and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said the league was supportive of the review.According to a notice distributed to sellers on Amazon, and first published by CNBC, the company said they are removing all products with the Redskins logo and name, and gave sellers just a few days to remove items.Washington State Attorney General sent a letter to Amazon asking for the team products to be removed. A woman has been arrested after allegedly trying to suffocate her 7-month-old son.Authorities said they took 23-year-old Jennifer Sandor, of Goodlettsville, Tennessee, into custody and charged her with attempted criminal homicide after she allegedly tried to suffocate her son, who was a patient at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.Sandor had taken her baby to the hospital for unexplained medical episodes that left the child blue and limp.On Friday, staff at the hospital said they witnessed Sandor use her hands to cover her son’s mouth and nose, preventing the baby from breathing.Reports stated the child was in obvious distress. They added he was struggling to free himself.Authorities said Sandor released the child only after staff intervened.         Sandor was being held in lieu of a 0,000 bond. 860

Amateur fossil enthusiast Phil Mullaly knew he had found something special when he spotted something glimmering in a boulder.Mullaly was walking along Jan Juc, a renowned fossil site along Victoria's Surf Coast in South Australia when he spotted a partially exposed shark tooth in the rock."I was immediately excited, it was just perfect," Mullaly said.That was just one of multiple teeth Mullaly found that day in 2015. Three years later, scientists have confirmed his hunch, saying Thursday that the teeth are all about 25 million years old and belonged to an extinct species of mega-toothed shark -- the Great Jagged Narrow-Toothed Shark (Carcharocles angustidens).The ancient shark was believed to grow up to about 9 meters (30 feet) long, double the size of a great white shark. The teeth discovered on the beach were around 7 cm (2.75 inches) in length.Mullaly's is one of the rarest finds in the history of paleontology, according to Erich Fitzgerald, a palaeontologist at Museums Victoria who led a team to excavate the site where the initial fossils were found."If you think about how long we've been looking for fossils around the world as a civilization -- which is maybe 200 years -- in (that time) we have found just three (sets of) fossils of this kind on the entire planet, and this most recent find from Australia is one of those three," Fitzgerald told CNN. 1382
