Katelynn Hudson started working at a fast-casual restaurant when she was 18 years old. It was her income as she tried to get herself through school, but minimum wage was not enough for her daily needs.“I was not able to afford food for myself," she says. "I could not pay my rent, I couldn’t pay bus fare. It was very difficult, and if I couldn’t provide for myself. I wouldn’t be able to provide for a family."Hudson now has a 2-and-a-half-year-old son, and she says she wouldn’t be able to support him if it wasn’t for a recent change in her pay. Illegal Pete’s in Denver, Colorado has raised its minimum wage from to within the past three and a half years, transforming that minimum wage into a living wage.“It covers lodging, food, paid time off, education, savings, basically the ability to pay one job and plan for the future,” Illegal Pete’s owner Pete Turner said.However, it doesn’t come without a cost. “The biggest challenge is an immediate hit to your expense line, to your payroll line,” Turner said.Turner says the last time he raised employee pay it cost him about million. However, he sees it as an investment. The idea is to create a productive work environment, where people are more committed to the customer and the company. Pete says he’s saving money by not having excessive employee turnover.“The rule of thumb for losing a front-line worker and then having to rehire and retrain is like ,500 to ,500 an employee,” he says.Growing in store count and store volume with workers who stay, Turner says his decision to raise minimum wage has been worth it so far. But he does admit it hasn’t been easy. And for some small business owners, the idea while appealing, seems unrealistic.“Everyone, I think, can agree that the minimum wage [needs] to be higher," says business owner Erika Righter. "However, in order for that to work, people need to then prioritize shopping locally."Righter is the founder of Hope Tank in Denver. Everything the store sells is connected to a local grassroots organization, giving Righter a lot of experience with small businesses.She says she would love to pay her workers more, but she thinks there’s a disconnect between the priorities of community and the way people spend their dollars.“I think you can’t shop Amazon all the time, and want the minimum wage raised,” she says.According to Righter, many local businesses pay their employees before themselves. She says there simply isn’t enough profit to pay them more, making an increase in minimum wage a bit of a concern.“As the owner, I struggle to stay above water financially myself,” Righter says.Robel Worku works for Colorado People’s Alliance, an organization that fights for justice in economic issues.“I think the argument is that if those costs go up, it’s harder to keep their doors open,” Worku said.Worku says COPA was recently able to help get a Colorado bill passed that gives authority to local governments to increase minimum wages.“The federal minimum wage has stayed stagnant at around .25 for the past 10 or so years, and even beyond that hasn’t raised much within the past few decades,” Worku said.Numbers from the U.S. Department of Labor show there was a steady increase in minimum wage from 2007 to 2009, raising it by a .40, but there hasn’t been a raise since. And before that, the last raise was 10 years prior in 1997. Worku says his organization believes everyone should be afforded the right to earn a livable wage, which is around per hour in Denver, Colorado. However, he understands that number changes from city to city, making it difficult to assess a specific amount for the federal minimum wage.“I don’t know if there’s like a gold-standard number in mind, but one of the reasons we’re excited about the local wage option legislation is that it allows local governments to make those decisions for themselves,” Worku said.So far, Worku says places that have raised minimum wage like Seattle and Chicago have seen an economic boost in the local economy. “So for instance, if you run a restaurant or a bar, you rely on folks having a disposable income to be able to come spend,” he explained. INDIANAPOLIS — Six people are suing Conagra, the company that manufactures Pam and other canned cooking sprays, after being severely burned and injured when a can of the cooking spray exploded or caught fire, they say.The law firm representing the six individuals, Koskoff Koskoff and Bieder, issued a press release Tuesday saying their lawsuit "aims to highlight the dangers of certain household cooking spray cans and Conagra's refusal to recall them."Raveen Sugantheraj, a medical student in Indianapolis, was burned back in March. His girlfriend, Rachel McCree, shared his story because Sugantheraj was still in the hospital having multiple surgeries at the time. McCree said Sugantheraj had been cooking when a can of Pam cooking spray sitting near the stove top exploded, causing a fire. Once the couple put out the fire, they noticed Sugantheraj had been severely burned and he was taken to the hospital where he had to undergo multiple skin grafts and other surgeries from the burns on the upper part of his body. "He's a full-time med student. He's educated. He's very smart ... he had no idea — I had no idea," McRee said at the time. "We know to keep cooking oil away, especially not on the stove top, but we had placed it far enough to where we thought it was OK."The law firm says their independent testing, over the course of several years, found a defect in the bottom of Conagra cooking spray cans that made them an extreme safety hazard. They claim Conagra has discontinued production of the new can design, but has refused to issue a recall for the already-shipped product. “It is beyond irresponsible that, to increase profits, Conagra Brands made and sold cans of household cooking spray that are susceptible to explosion, choosing not to use the safer designs as it had for the last sixty years, and failed to warn consumers about the very serious risks,” said J. Craig Smith of Koskoff Koskoff & Bieder, the law firm that represents the victims in each of the cases. “Perhaps more alarming is the fact that, to this day, Conagra apparently refuses to institute a nationwide recall to ensure that the defective cans sitting on store shelves right now are removed before someone else suffers permanent injury from an explosion. Each day that these cans remain on store shelves, Conagra’s negligence puts consumers in danger.”The six different lawsuits against Conagra Brands Inc, were filed in Cook County Superior Court in Chicago, home of Conagra's headquarters. It’s been nearly nine months since Hurricane Michael hit the Florida Panhandle. Though time has passed, those living in the remains of what Hurricane Michael left in its wake are struggling. Tyndall Air Force Base is one of the many places still trying to recover and rebuild. Hurricane Michael was the first Category Hurricane to strike the contiguous United States Since Andrew in 1992. According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Hurricane Michael did nearly billion in damage. However, nearly nine months since the storm there is still plenty of damage and debris in Panama City, Panama City Beach, and Mexico Beach, where Michael hit the hardest.“Life at Tyndall prior to the storm was your normal Air Force Base,” says Col. Jeff Hawkins, the vice wing commander of the 325th flight wing at Tyndall Air Force Base. “When the storm was about to hit, we had about three and a half days to prepare. We had to recall all of our pilots and maintainers to prepare the aircraft to launch. Within 18 hours, we ended up getting 70 percent of our aircraft out.” According to Hawkins, the aircraft that weren’t able to make it out, including 17 F-22 jets, were damaged, but are currently getting repairs. “About 50 percent of them were destroyed, and 50 percent of them were able to be recovered," Hawkins explains. "The total cost for the Air Force is estimated around .25 billion for the entire recovery. The rebuild portion itself will cost around .7 billion.”Hawkins said the recovery of the entire base is estimated to take between five and six years.While no one lost their life in the storm, plenty did lose their homes. “Everybody’s got a different scenario they’re dealing with,” Hawkins says. “Some people owned homes in the community, and they are in the process of rebuilding those homes and repairing. Unfortunately, for those that lived on the base, they didn’t have a home to come back to. For instance, my family is living in Eglin Air Force Base, and I commute here three or four days a week.” Eglin Air Force base is nearly two hours west of Tyndall. However, according to Hawkins, Tyndall AFB is so vital to the military because of the training it provides and the airspace. When the storm hit, the base had to take a hiatus between 60 and 90 days. But now, training continues while the base still recovers. “The one mission that is currently not being flown at Tyndall Air Force Base itself is we have moved our F-22 aircraft to Eglin," Hawkins says. "But with every bad there’s good, so there’s an opportunity to build the Air Force Base of the future.” 2607
