BEIJING, Oct. 2 (Xinhua) -- The number of passengers traveling on China's railway set a new daily record on Oct.1 driven by holiday makers and improved rail transport capacity, railway authorities said Saturday.Daily railway passenger traffic on Friday hit 8.3 million riders, up 19.8 percent year on year and overtaking the daily record of 7.1 million set on May 1 during the Labor Day holiday, the Ministry of Railways (MOR) said.Friday's figure also outnumbered the previous day by 1.8 million, the MOR said.Over the past four days more than 24 million people in China chose to travel by train, which is 10.3 percent higher than the figure during the same period last year, said the ministry.Thanks to China's increased transport capacity, stemming partially from high-speed railway construction, railway authorities managed to meet the travel demands of holiday makers, which are dominated by travelers and those who were returning home.China's weeklong National Day holiday begins on Friday.China has 7,055 kilometers of high-speed railway in service, which is the world's longest, said He Huawu, chief engineer of the MOR.By 2012, China will have a railway network of 110,000 kilometers, 13,000 kilometers of which will be high-speed rail, according to the MOR.

So high schoolers, altogether more than 3,000, were transferred to four schools in Lanzhou and Dingxi City."The new dormitory has everything -- bed sheets, tooth brushes, slippers, toilet paper, you name it", said Wang Wentian, whose house was destroyed. Fortunately, her family was not at home when the mudslides struck.Another student, Guo Xiangban, lost several loved ones in the mudslides. "I still feel sad when I am alone. But the past is the past and I have to move on with my life," said Guo.On the same day, students of the newly-built Beichuan High School, where over 1,000 students were killed after two school buildings collapsed during the Wenchuan earthquake on May 12, 2008, also started their new semester."I have never been in a school so beautiful. SHIJIAZHUANG, Sept. 23 (Xinhua) -- Four Japanese are being investigated in China for having entered a military zone without authorization and illegally videotaped military targets in northern Hebei Province, local state security authorities said Thursday.The state security authorities in Shijiazhuang, capital of Hebei, have taken measures against the four people according to law after receiving a report about their illegal activities.The authorities only gave one name of the four Japanese nationals, Sada Takahashi."Currently, the case is being investigated," the state security authorities in Shijiazhuang said in a statement.No further details were provided.

BAOSHAN, Yunnan, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) -- The death toll from mudslides that hit a village in southwest China's Yunnan Province Wednesday has climbed to 12, and 36 are still missing, the rescue headquarters said Thursday.By 9:30 p.m. Thursday, rescuers had saved 23 people from the rubble of homes in Hedong Village of Longyang District in Baoshan City, headquarters officials said at the site.The accident happened at about 10:20 p.m. Wednesday, trapping 71 people from 21 families.An initial investigation blamed the tragedy on loose dirt and rocks sitting on a sleep slope which had been soaked in rainfall for about ten days.More than 1,000 people have participated in the rescue operation and more than 120 medical workers are treating the injured and disinfecting the site.Tents, quilts, clothes and plenty of first-aid materials have been sent to the site where rescuers are evacuating people to safe places.
