SAN DIEGO (CNS) - San Diego International Airport broke its passenger traffic record for the fifth consecutive year, serving roughly 24 million passengers in 2018, the Airport Authority announced Friday.The total -- up nearly 10 percent over last year -- included one million international passengers, a 19 percent jump from 2017, according to the Airport Authority, which credited several airlines' expanded service and airport-wide traffic increases for the new record.``This is a tremendous time of growth for not only SAN but the entire San Diego region,'' said Kim Becker, the airport's president and CEO. ``With more people choosing San Diego as their destination of choice, we are looking ahead at projects to accommodate this trend and provide the world-class airport experience our customers and community deserve.''Airlines servicing the airport added 16 new routes throughout the year and 15 of the airport's 17 airlines saw overall traffic increases.According to the Airport Authority, Southwest Airlines added 794,401 passengers from 2017 to 2018, the most of any airline flying out of San Diego. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police Thursday were searching for a suspect who carjacked a 56-year-old man while he was listening to music in a City Heights parking lot.It happened around 9:35 p.m. Wednesday in a parking lot near the intersection of Euclid and University avenues, San Diego police Officer Robert Heims said.The victim was listening to music in his red 2013 Nissan Versa sedan when a man walked up to the car, lifted his shirt up and showed that he had a gun in his waistband, Heims said. The suspect then told the 56-year-old man to get out of the car, and the victim complied.The suspect got into the Nissan, which had California license plate 7EKT818, and drove off southbound on Euclid Avenue, the officer said.The suspect was described as a 5-foot-11 Hispanic man in his early 20s who weighed between 150 and 180 pounds. He had a thin mustache and was last seen wearing a white shirt and a blue baseball hat.Anyone with information on the suspect or the whereabouts of the car is asked to call SDPD's robbery division at 619-531-2299. 1051
SAN DIEGO (CNS) - State regulators have approved .1 million in funding for a slew of hydrogen refueling stations, including four in San Diego County, officials said Saturday.The funding, for a total of 123 stations statewide, will "expand California's early commercial light duty hydrogen refueling and fuel cell electric vehicle markets and (will) accommodate the projected FCEV roll-out in 2021-2024," according to the California Energy Commission.Funds were awarded to three companies -- FirstElement, Iwatani and Shell -- for 36 hydrogen stations to service passenger vehicles. Another 87 stations were also recommended for funding to these same awardees in subsequent funding batches.The funding awarded Friday includes stations at the following locations:1832 W. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The San Diego Downtown Rotary Breakfast Club will donate ,000 Wednesday to Honor Flight San Diego, an organization that flies World War II and Korean War veterans to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials dedicated to the conflicts in which they fought.The donation will be used to cover air fare for the organization's next excursion, scheduled for May 2020. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Police today were investigating the death of a man found lying in the middle of a Rancho Bernardo road.Dispatchers received a call about 11:55 p.m. Thursday from a person who reported seeing a person down in the road near the intersection of Cresta Drive and Sonora Road, just south of Rancho Bernardo Road, San Diego police Sgt. Michael Stirk said.Firefighters responded to the area, found the man and pronounced the victim dead at the scene, Stirk said.Investigators were attempting to determine if the man was hit by a car or suffered a medical emergency, Stirk said.The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office was called to the scene and will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death.Anyone with information regarding the death was asked to call San Diego County Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477. 839
