The flower fields have been around for 50 years. The Flower Fields are owned and operated by the Ecke Family, the onsite grower and floral sales is handled by Mellano and Company. They share their passion for beauty and expertise inthe flower business, with a combined experience of 100 years. The Flowers Fields are known all over the world. There is no other place like it with over 50 acres of ranunculus flowers in 13 different colors. The flowers are delicate, its seed is tiny, paper thin, and smaller than an oat flake. The seed has to be mixed with water and sand, then it is placed in a cooler for two weeks to trick the seed into thinking it had a winter. Ranunculus do best in temperate climate. Morning fog, cool mornings, and temperatures in the 50s and 60s help the flower production. The flower fields are ecofriendly, they use a drip irrigation system. It places water exactly where the seed is, using the water needed and not more than that.Extreme temperatures can be costly and one of the biggest threats to the crop. Winter warm ups are less than ideal but too much rain is also bad. The team at the Flower Fields has learned to tackle the weather, but every year presents new challenges. This year they are expecting the best season yet, you can visit the Flower Fields through Mother’s Day weekend. Next year expect a new color to be added to the already beautiful fields. 1402

The Department of Homeland Security and the Pentagon are having initial discussions that could lead to a 45-day extension of the southern border mission for US troops, according to two administration officials.DHS would have to make a specific request to the Pentagon. Under the current plan, the border mission is scheduled to end December 15.The discussion comes following tensions at the border Sunday, when about?500 migrants overwhelmed police blockades on the Mexican side of the San Ysidro port of entry, two journalists in Tijuana told CNN. US authorities used tear gas to disperse the crowds, which included families and small children, and more than 100 migrants were arrested. One of the officials said that "based on what happened on Sunday" DHS still wants the help of the Defense Department, adding that "the threat has not gone away."The agencies are also discussing whether some engineers who worked on fortifying crossing points in Arizona and Texas can now be sent home and whether more troops will shift to California.President Donald Trump sent about 5,800 federal troops to the border after spending the weeks leading up to the midterm elections decrying a procession of migrants that was still thousands of miles from the US border. Last week, Trump granted the troops new powers to aid in "crowd control, temporary detention and cursory search" while protecting Customs and Border Protection personnel from the migrants, should they engage in violence. On Wednesday afternoon, Secretary of Defense James Mattis said the Pentagon was ready to "react to the Department of Homeland Security" if it asks for any extensions. Mattis added, "Right now we have no new requests, although we are discussing every day the situation and so I can't forecast when that will be."Last week Homeland Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said she had "no doubt that DoD will continue to be our partners in this mission until it is resolved."NPR was first to report the possible extension. 2004

The coronavirus crisis has shown how generous people can be.When the pandemic started, animal advocates from all over North America got together and launched a massive fostering campaign.“I don’t think we ever thought people would be so willing to open up their homes to homeless pets,” said Kristen Hassen-Auerbach with Human Animal Support Services, a group educating others on how to reduce animal euthanasia. The group says the campaign resulted in nearly half of shelter pets going into foster care in April and May.In some places, the wait list was longer than the pets needing placement.“If this moment has taught us anything, it’s that we're all vulnerable. On any day, it could be any one of us that’s facing losing our homes or our pets and this is the time to help each other,” said Hassen-Auerbach.The group is now helping shelters evolve. They want a majority of animals that come into shelters to be in foster homes within hours or days. That frees up money to provide food and medical support to animal owners going through tough times.“We’re finding through early research that dogs in particular are only going a couple of houses to a couple of blocks away from their house. They're really close to home most of the time and many times if someone can just hold an animal for a few hours, they can get it home without the stress of the shelter,” said Hassen-Auerbach.You can find out more about how it works here. 1436

The daughters of the late singer-songwriter Oscar Brown Jr. said Monday that President Donald Trump is twisting the lyrics of their father's song titled, "The Snake" for politics."Oscar Brown Jr.'s words are being stolen to promote his hate message and intolerance," Africa Brown told CNN's Don Lemon on "CNN Tonight." "And it's absolutely wrong."The song tells the story of a woman who takes in a frozen snake she finds on her way to work. After the snake is nursed back to health, it bites the woman and kills her.  530

The family of Stephon Clark, the 22-year-old black man shot and killed by Sacramento Police, will be exploring "every legal remedy possible" in search of justice, according to their attorney Benjamin Crump.Speaking to CNN on Sunday, Crump said Clark's death should not be "swept under the rug." Crump also called for accountability from both sides."There's great mistrust" between communities of color and police, Crump told CNN's Dan Simon. The attorney has also represented the families of Trayvon Martin, Michael Brown and Tamir Rice. 545
