Teachers are talking candidly about the challenges this school year will bring. With many school districts in Virginia opting to start the school year with distance learning, one Hampton Roads social studies teacher shares his thoughts on how to help students have a virtually successful school year.Christopher True is a middle school social studies teacher who is gearing up for a new school year and the inevitable challenge that will come with it.True says communication is key to virtual success.“If that student is struggling with something, they may not be telling the parent.”He says parents should encourage their children not to be afraid to reach out to their teacher for help.True says the communication between students and teachers is just as important as the communication between the teachers and parents. He says parents shouldn’t be afraid of contacting teachers and describes virtual learning as “a community-led effort.”Schools will undoubtedly have expectations for students, even at home, but True hopes those expectations come leniency.“If you have a student whose parents work and [that student] actually has to go to daycare, they can't be expected to be in a class zoom at 10 a.m. if they don't have access to that stuff. And that's just going to be one of those things that we have to account for.”The test run of virtual learning at the end of last school year taught everyone new lessons, including that it takes time to adjust. While he’s banking on beginning the school year virtually, True is looking forward to connecting in the classroom once again.“There's no place I'd rather be. I can't wait to sit in a classroom with my kids again when we can do it safely and I can keep my students safe.”WTKR's Kofo Lasaki first reported this story. 1779

Technology is constantly evolving, and often times, it makes things more convenient.Charley Sullivan uses smart technology a lot, specifically her Amazon Echo. The Echo’s virtual assistant, Alexa, will read Charley’s emails aloud to her, check the weather and more. She thought it’d be a great gift for her husband, Bobby, but he knew she’d enjoy it more.“I knew how much she was going to use that thing,” he says. “I mean, she uses it to read her bible listened to radio programs; she plays games on it.” Amazon’s Alexa has brought convenience to homes everywhere, by playing music, checking the news, ordering groceries and more. But it’s especially helpful when you can't see. Both Charley and Bobby are blind.“Well, it's so wonderful,” Charley says of the device. “And when I was a child, we had braille, and we had books on records.”Now, the two are using Alexa, along cell phones and an Apple watch to make life easier. While they wish the technology could do even more, the two are grateful.“If you are going to be blind, this is the time, the day and time to be blind, with all the technology that there is out there today,” Charley says. 1155

TAMPA, Fla. — Nearly 90 friends in the Tampa, Fla., area are betting big on their Mega Millions chances Tuesday. The group pooled together their money to purchase 11,000 tickets from a Ybor City neighborhood market, according to The Tampa Bay Times. And it's not the first time the group has gone in together for the prize either. The group has already reportedly spent ,000 on Mega Millions tickets, and rolled over winnings of ,224, according to the paper.Ryan McGuinness, who purchased the tickets, told the Times, "Everybody is back in."The group is hoping those past winnings pay off with Tuesday's drawing for the .6 billion jackpot. With a lump sum option of 5 million, divide that by 90 and each is walking away with at least million — before taxes. Not a bad chunk of change if you're willing to wait for all those tickets to be printed. If no one wins the Mega Millions jackpot yet again Tuesday, that pot could grow to an estimated  billion for Friday's drawing. 1015
