SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hundreds of families of babies once cared for in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Sharp Mary Birch were reunited with their medical teams on Saturday.Sharp Mary Birch hosted its annual NICU Little Graduates Reunion at NTC Park at Liberty Station. The hospital holds the event each fall. The event is an opportunity for past NICU families to reunite with the doctors, nurses and team members who cared for them during their stay and celebrate their child’s health.Aldy and Alan Serrano went with their son, Xander. Xander weighed just 14 ounces when he was born in 2016. Xander spent nearly four months in the NICU at Sharp Mary Birch. Besides seeing doctors and nurses, the Serrano's are thankful to be reunited with other families who also had children in the NICU during that time."When you're going through it, it's very difficult to explain to other people how you're feeling and whats actually happening. It's nice to have somebody to relate to," Aldy said.They have made relationships that will last a lifetime."We have several friends we met during our NICU stay that are now like family," Aldy said. "The challenges in the NICU don't stop in the NICU. As they grow up, there are so many other things that can happen that they can relate to."Xander is now an active happy and healthy toddler. He will be two at the end of the month.The reunion event also had a bounce house, bubble station, music, costumed Storm Troopers and games for all ages to enjoy. Sharp Mary Birch offers a full range of maternity, neonatal, and women’s surgical services, and delivers more than 9,000 babies annually. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Facing an alarming increase of COVID-19 cases, Governor Gavin Newsom is requiring every county in California to close indoor operations.The roll back targets restaurants, wineries, movie theaters, family entertainment, zoos, museums, and cardrooms."We are moving back into a modification mode of our stay-at-home order," Newsom said.San Diego County and 29 other counties on the state's monitoring lists are being directed to close indoor operations at fitness centers, worship services, offices for non-critical sections, personal care services, hair salons and barber shops and malls.State officials confirmed 8,358 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday. Hospitalizations have increased 28% over the past two weeks.6,485 Californians were hospitalized with coronavirus, according to Newsom.Three Northern California counties reported diminished ICU capacity -- Placer, Butte, and Lake."This virus is not going away anytime soon," Newsom said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hate crime charges were filed Monday against the Little Italy man accused of attacking three Muslim women wearing hijabs. Kyle Allen, 50, pleaded not guilty to battery in a San Diego courtroom following the Oct. 6 incident. The women were walking on Columbia Street when Allen approached them from the other direction. Witnesses said Allen lunged his shoulder into them, tried to remove one woman's hijab, then hit one of the women. RELATED: San Diego Police: Alleged attack on 3 women in hijabs a possible hate crime "As I got closer I heard him calling her names and telling them to go back to where they came from," a witness who only wanted to be identified as Amy told 10News. Passersby trailed Allen back to his high-rise apartment in Little Italy and called police. San Diego Police said Allen answered his front door while holding a handgun with a silencer. A total of 10 guns were found in Allen's home and seized, investigators said. Allen was arrested without incident.Protection orders are in place for the three women, keeping Allen from contacting them or coming within 100 yards.Allen will return to court Dec. 19 for a preliminary hearing.
