Former first lady Barbara Bush didn't consider herself a Republican after Donald Trump took office, according to a forthcoming book obtained by USA Today about the matriarch of a GOP political dynasty."After Trump's rise, she saw it as a party she could not continue to support, a party she no longer recognized -- even as one of her grandsons, George P. Bush, was on the ballot as a Republican running for re-election as Texas land commissioner," author Susan Page wrote in an excerpt adapted from her new book, "The Matriarch: Barbara Bush and the Making of an American Dynasty." The excerpt was published Wednesday in 633
HAMPTON, Va. - Hampton University's Mo'ne Davis took the country by storm in 2014, becoming the first girl to pitch a shutout in Little League World Series history. That performance led to another historic moment when Davis became the first Litte Leaguer to be featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. Due to the stardom Davis experienced after making headlines as a 13-year-old, there was a lot of excitement when she decided to play softball at Hampton. “I was like oh snap," Hampton outfielder/first baseman Brianna Anderson said. "I was like oh this is big.” “When everyone found out she was coming it was kind of a cool deal, you know,” Hampton head softball coach Angela Nicholson said.Although, the position that earned her fame more than five years ago is now in the past for Davis. In fact, she won't even pitch to her teammates during practice, even though they ask to hit off her "like every day," Nicholson said.As a 13-year-old baseball player, Davis was pitching as fast as 70 miles per hour, but now she utilizes that arm strength at middle infield.“I wanted to keep hitting so I was like I'm just gonna play an field position," Davis said. “Her transition and her glove work is phenomenal, and that’s where you see the baseball side of things,” Nicholson said. The transition, early on, was accompanied with some uncertainty by the Pirates. The team was unsure what to expect from someone who experienced stardom at such a young age.“I thought the kid was gonna be arrogant or cocky, but it was complete opposite," Nicholson said. "If you didn’t know who she was it would never come out. She doesn’t speak of it. She just wants to be a normal everyday person.” “From the moment she stepped on campus she’s worked harder than everybody," Hampton pitcher Emily Workman said. "She just always gives it 110 percent.” Davis made her Pirates debut on Sunday, going 1-for-3 with a two-run single in Hampton's season opener against North Carolina A&T. The Pirates take the field again on Friday in Greenville, North Carolina, where they'll face George Washington University. This article was written by Megan Plain for 2145

If Santa brought you cash this holiday season, the IRS might have a less exciting present of its own for you in April. Three tax pros share tips for knowing whether your holiday haul might turn into a lump of coal this tax season — and what to do about it.Cash giftsIf a friend or family member gave you a check in December, you probably don’t have to pay taxes on it. “If you get cash from anyone as just a gift with no expectation of anything in return, it’s never taxable to the recipient,” says Kristie DeLuca, a certified public accountant and partner at Samet & Company in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. The giver might have to do some extra paperwork at tax time, though. What might happen: The giver might have to file a gift tax return if the gift was more than ,000. The good news is that sizable IRS annual and lifetime giving exclusions mean the giver doesn’t necessarily have to pay an actual 923
Hundreds, if not thousands, of needles were found at a Lorain, Ohio home where two men died from an opioid overdose this week, according to a news release from the Lorain Police Department. On Wednesday, police responded to the home and found two men with no obvious signs of life laying on a tattered mattress on the floor in the living room.An EMS worker said both men showed no signs of life and estimated both of them had been dead for a couple of hours, the police report stated. The girlfriend of one of the deceased men said she called her boyfriend's phone and when he didn't answer, she went over to the abandoned home because it was one of "his favorite places to visit," the report states. The girlfriend said when she arrived, the door was locked, so she climbed through the broken basement window and found her boyfriend and the second man.Authorities found hundreds or perhaps thousands of hypodermic needles. According to police, it appeared the house had been on fire at some point because of the smell of smoke and the upstairs carpet was saturated with moisture. The home had no running water so the upstairs bathroom was overflowing with feces, the report said.Police say the abandoned home is frequented by drug users. The home appeared to be in deplorable condition, with rotting floors and a broken foundation. The home poses a major health and safety hazard. It's a risk for authorities who may have to enter the home again if they need to respond to another incident as the one mentioned above, police said. The home was also a site for illegal dumping. The Lorain Police Department encourages residents to report activity in abandoned buildings and prevent children from playing in and around these homes. 1737
