SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Biomedical technician, engineering and phlebotomy are just some of the programs MiraCosta College offered free for fall 2020 for Oceanside residents, thanks to Hire Local."The intent was to train up Oceanside residents for in-demand jobs, in Oceanside, in our companies that pay competitive wages."Hire Local was funded by federal approved grants, and was created by the City of Oceanside and MiraCosta College."We saw it as a win-win because it helps our residents find meaningful careers while creating a talent pipeline for our businesses, so they can stay here and grow here," described Michelle Gellar, with the City of Oceanside.Michelled added the program helped people who lost their jobs amid COVID-19 get back on their feet."We're doing our best to help our businesses navigate through this tough time. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Dawn Hendon knows a thing or two when it comes to the big day for couples, she was a wedding planner then became an officiant over the past 10 years."It's a happy business, I like to be around people for joyous occasions and weddings are always a happy event so I thought this is a happy thing, and today we need all the joy we can find," Hendon said.Recently, she's added a backyard chapel at her San Marcos home to her list of services. "I even have shoes, accessories, floral head pieces, boutonnieres for guys and tuxedos for men."Love Wedding Chapel is what she calls it and she was able to pull it off thanks to help with a grant from the San Diego Black Chamber of Commerce. At a time she said when people are supporting more black owned businesses amid the fight for racial injustice, "I’m glad people are looking to support black owned businesses. Sometimes we have a lot more challenges, our population isn’t so big in San Diego." And in the middle of a global pandemic, Hendon said, "I’ve lost family members with COVID this year and I thought finding our joy is important so it brings me joy, and I hope to bring joy to others."She said there was no better time than now to create the business of her dreams, "I thought if we could bring a little bit of that dream to them and bring them a nice environment then it’d make their day a little special."She received her Masters in Business Administration last year and said everything she's learned and accomplished has helped make this business happen. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Birch Aquarium has opened a new exhibit showcasing one of the sea's most beautiful creatures in one of the world's largest habitats for the animal.The aquarium's new permanent exhibition "Seadragons and Seahorses" featuring Weedy and Leafy seadragons and several species of seahorses and pipefish.At the center of the exhibit will sit one of the world's largest seadragon habitats in the world, measuring 18 feet wide, 9 feet tall and containing 5,375 gallons of water, according to the aquarium.The exhibit takes guests into the lives of seadragons and seahorses, showcasing the sea life in a habitat designed to create the ideal environment for them to breed. Guests will learn how to observe the animals like scientists, catch distinguishing features, and identify courting and mating behaviors.The exhibit also gives visitors a peek into the Birch Aquariums Husbandry Team working to ensure the species thrives.
