Powerful winds are expected to sweep through California on Sunday, exacerbating three major fires that have ravaged the state from both ends for several days. The Camp Fire -- the most destructive fire in state history and the third-deadliest -- has killed at least 23 people and 110 are missing. Hundreds of thousands of residents have been displaced and thousands of homes and structures have been destroyed.Saturday saw a brief reprieve in the fierce winds fueling the fires, and firefighters hoped to use the break to their advantage.PHOTOS: 3 wildfires rage in CaliforniaBut on Sunday a Cal Fire unit chief warned that "it's not over yet." 651

President Donald Trump has announced that he will accept the Republican nomination for president next week from the White House, he said during a campaign rally in Wisconsin. While presidents facing re-election have generally shied away from holding major political events at the White House, Trump is eschewing precedent with his convention speech, which will come as the capstone to next week’s Republican National Convention. The convention, which starts next Monday, will conclude on Aug. 27 with the president’s address. One reason presidents have opted to hold events away from the White House is not to comingle government and campaign staffs. While the president and vice president are exempt from the Hatch Act, staff members and aides generally have to avoid many types of political activity. Hatch Act concerns have previously been an issue for the White House, most notably the US Special Counsel calling Trump aide Kellyanne Conway a "repeat offender" of the act. But with this year’s convention being held virtually, speeches will be done on location. The same is true for the Democrats, who start their national convention tonight. Trump said he had considered Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, as an alternate location for his acceptance speech. 1260

POWAY, CA (KGTV) - A post office in Poway could soon be named after Ray Chavez, who was the oldest living Pearl Harbor survivor when he passed away in 2018.Wednesday, California Representative Scott Peters will announce legislation to make the change. He says it's backed by every member of California's Congressional delegation.Chavez served in the Navy and was stationed on the USS Condor minesweeper on December 7, 1941. After the Japanese fighter planes attacked, he spent 9 days searching the water for enemy subs and wreckage of sunken US ships.Over the last few years, Chavez had been a staple of WWII and Pearl Harbor commemoration ceremonies, even flying to Washington DC to meet with President Trump in the spring of 2018.He passed away in November of 2018.RELATED: Oldest Pearl Harbor survivor dies at 106It takes an act of Congress to name a Post Office. In a news release, Peters' office says that a handful of local leaders from the City of Poway, the Post Office and military groups will gather at the Post Office on Midland Road to show their support and urge Congress to approve the change."He didn’t grab the spotlight, the spotlight came to him," says Mark Balmert, the President of the San Diego Military Advisory Council. "He accepted that, and he did a great job of telling people what it was like to be part of the Greatest Generation."RELATED: Oldest Pearl Harbor survivor laid to restPeople in Poway say they'll be proud to go to a Post Office named after a local hero."Every day people will see his name there," says Karen Simonich. "He’s a survivor who lived a long life. It’s an honor for him and I think people will appreciate his name being remembered that way.""It’s terrific," says Len Holyk. "It's a big honor for him and his family and for all the vets out there that served the country."Balmert says he hopes the change will inspire more people to learn about Chavez and the legacy of WWII Veterans."He was always proud to be an American and proud to serve and very humble about it," says Balmert. 2041

President Donald Trump is threatening to withhold federal money if schools don’t reopen in the fall. He says the guidelines that his own federal health officials have created for schools to reopen are impractical and expensive. Trump isn't saying what funds would be cut off or what authority he had to make the move.San Diego Unified School Board Vice President Richard Barrera contested the president's authority to cut funding."He does not have that power. The federal aid that’s going to schools is approved by congress and under law, it has to be distributed to schools," Barrera said.In the 2018-19 school year, San Diego Unified received about 5 million in federal revenue, about 7.4% of its general fund budget.Barrera said SDUSD "desperately" wants to reopen campuses August 31, but said reopening can only occur if the viral spread is sufficiently under control and the district has appropriate funding for safety measures.Taking to Twitter to voice frustration, Trump argues that countries including Germany, Denmark and Norway have reopened schools “with no problems.” He's also repeating his claim that Democrats want to keep schools closed for political reasons, not because of coronavirus risks.I disagree with @CDCgov on their very tough & expensive guidelines for opening schools. While they want them open, they are asking schools to do very impractical things. I will be meeting with them!!!— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 8, 2020In Germany, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and many other countries, SCHOOLS ARE OPEN WITH NO PROBLEMS. The Dems think it would be bad for them politically if U.S. schools open before the November Election, but is important for the children & families. May cut off funding if not open!— Donald J. PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Journalists have been covering protests in Portland, Oregon, for three months. But in the chaos, some have been injured or arrested. Whether they are from major media outlets, freelancers, or self-proclaimed "citizen journalists," reporters say they're doing their job and law enforcement is hindering that work. Police say protesters have masqueraded as journalists and then set fires or thrown fireworks, making it a struggle to figure out who's a real reporter during the pandemonium. Journalists typically wear clothing that says "press" and has badges that clearly identify them as reporters. 627
