SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - After eight weeks of rehabilitation, SeaWorld San Diego rescue teams release seven rescued sea lions back into the ocean. Six of the sea lions were malnourished pups when they were first rescued. It took rescue crews about two months to help them regain their strength and nutrients needed. The seventh sea lion was discovered on La Jolla Shores with a shark bite wound to his shoulder. Rescue crews tell 10News they watched him for three days and then took him to their veterinarians because they noticed he wasn't using his left fin at all. After x-rays, SeaWorld San Diego vets discovered several broken bones in his front left fin and his left shoulder was snapped in half. Intense rehabilitation over the past eight weeks has him in good condition to return to the wild Tuesday. During the rescue return trip, General Hospital actress and dedicated animal advocate Carolyn Hennesy joined. Hennesy works closely with the SeaWorld San Diego rescue center and often joins them on return trips. As part of tradition, before animals are released, Hennesy said a few words to the sea lions, "Considering myself part of the SeaWorld family, I will say it was wonderful having you." All seven were released into the ocean about an hour from shore. SeaWorld San Diego tells 10News they've rescued over 600 animals in 2019 already including, 137 sea lions. 1379

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- A San Diego woman who participated in a local coronavirus vaccine trial is sharing her experience.Although it’s a blind study, she says she’s convinced she received the vaccine and she hopes her story will encourage others to get vaccinated.During the summer, American biotech company Moderna began some of its phase three trials in San Diego. Leslie Sullivan was one of those patients.“I put my name in the hat and by the end of July I was in getting my first dose,” she told 10News.The vaccine is given in two doses. “It felt like a flu shot and not much in the way of reaction after the first one,” Sullivan added.She says the second time she received the shot, she felt something. “By midnight I spiked a fever, I had chills, it was exactly like how the flu feels.”A day later, Sullivan was back to normal.Sullivan doesn’t know whether or not she got the vaccine, but says based on the symptoms she experienced, she’s almost positive she didn’t get a placebo. She says some people she’s spoken with mistakenly believe that if she got the actual vaccine, she had COVID-19.“The vaccine does not give you COVID this particular one has no live virus in it at all.”Both the Moderna and Pfizer vaccines use MRNA technology, which relies on messenger RNA to essentially trick the body into making antibodies to fight the virus.At some point Sullivan will find out if she did indeed get the vaccine When a vaccine is made available to the public, those who received a placebo will be notified so they can get vaccinated. 1544

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - An East San Diego County military wife whose husband is accused of poisoning her with thallium is facing intensive rehabilitation, according to a GoFundMe account in her name.Race Uto, 27, was arrested in March on suspicion of giving his wife Brigida the heavy metal, which is found in rat poison and ant killers.A search warrant obtained by 10News indicated Brigida Uto had been sick since September 2017 and did not know the cause. She suffered weakness and hair loss, and was eventually near death, according to the warrant.RELATED: East San Diego County man suspected of poisoning his wifeDoctors determined Brigida ingested the Thallium, which was found in ‘extreme levels’ in her system when she was admitted to the hospital.The FBI, NCIS and San Diego County HazMat determined Brigida had been poisoned by someone with access to her food and drinks.Investigators searched the couple’s home in Dulzura and confiscated laptops, a coffee blender, four cups and other electronics.The warrant also shows that Race had an affair while he was deployed in the Navy and that the couple had gone through counseling.RELATED: Warrant reveals troubled marriage in poisoning caseRace told detectives he has no idea how his wife came into contact with the poison. She also said she had no idea who would want to hurt her.Brigida suffered significant nerve damage and doctors are unsure if she will regain feeling in her legs. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego sailor is on a mission to keep homeless veterans from going cold this winter.U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer Gregory Ellis hopes to raise ,500 for winter jackets that convert into both sleeping bags and over-the-shoulder bags during the off-season.The jackets are made by the Detroit-based nonprofit The Empowerment Plan, which hires single parents from homeless shelters to sew the jackets. “Our homeless veteran community, many of them are very proud and don’t want to be a burden on anybody,” said Ellis.He plans to deliver the jackets to veterans staying at the Veterans Village of San Diego temporary bridge shelter, which houses nearly 200 homeless veterans. “A jacket that actually converts into a sleeping bag, that actually converts to an over-the-shoulder bag, it’s three times beneficial for them, so at least they’ll have something warm to put over their shoulders and keep them out of the elements.”Ellis says he wants veterans to know the community cares about them and is grateful for their service.You can donate to the fundraising effort here. 1099

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — A San Diego Unified School Board Trustee is moving forward with a possible settlement over accusations of date-rape and other sexual advances.Kevin Beiser is facing accusations of date-rape, groping, and other sexual advances, brought forth by four men, including his former political consultant and former campaign manager. Beiser has denied all allegations since they surfaced in March.The settlement could indicate a preference to not allow a jury to decide whether Beiser is innocent of the accusations, according to political analyst John Dadian."The oldest rule in the book is if you go to trial, even if you are innocent, you never know what jury is going to do. That's exactly why people do settle," Dadian said.The victims' attorney told 10News he could not comment on the case to the media as part of the agreement. In March, Beiser was placed on leave from his teaching position in Chula Vista. The San Diego County Democratic Party has asked for Beiser to resign from the school board.Despite the scandal, Beiser has announced that he will be running for San Diego City Council next year as well. 1135
