September Buys, a teacher in Michigan, says she doesn't really like garage sales, and that should tell you just how far she will go to help her students this year.Buys, an art teacher at Crossroads Middle School in Grand Rapids, said she was feeling helpless about all the uncertainty surrounding the school year-- and decided to channel her frustration into cleaning."I just started cleaning out my closet, because that felt better, just to let some things go," she said. "I made a pile, and then I moved onto the girls’ closet, and then I moved onto the toy room, and just this pile grew and grew and grew.”The idea came to her to hold a garage sale to give away the items. She also reached out to the community on Facebook, asking if others had items they wanted to contribute as well.Instead of selling what's been collected, Buys asked people to donate art supplies or purchase items off the Amazon wishlist she created to help her students.“I think it’s really, really important for people to connect with each other and be kind to each other and if you have something extra, why not share it? Things are things… I think what’s more important for me right now is to make sure that my students are cared for and that they have the things they need to feel like they can express what’s going on, they can kind of get some of that stuff out, and the more materials and stuff I have for my students, the better.”Buys plans to take all the art supplies to create individual 'art kits' for her students."We always need help with purchasing supplies – but this year especially, whether the kids are at home or whether they’re in person, they’re not going to be able to share supplies in the same way. I can’t take one package of pencils and put it in the middle of the table for kids to share anymore. Sounds of gunfire prompted emergency calls and a lockdown at a North Carolina high school, but a public information officer says there is currently no evidence of an active shooter.Officials with the Pender County Sheriffs' Office are still searching Topsail High School as a precaution, and Pender Schools remain on lockdown.The high school went into lockdown at 6:30 a.m. ET due to reports of the sounds of gunfire. Pender Schools confirmed in a tweet that it was investigating an active shooter at Topsail High School at about 8 a.m. It added that all of the district's campuses on the "eastern side of Pender County" are on lockdown.Pender Schools later confirmed that the noises "from the top of the building" were mistaken for gunfire. They added that it was determined that there was no weapon and no shooter.There currently are no reports of injuries.More on this as it develops. 930

SPRING VALLEY, Calif. (KGTV) -- Two teenagers were arrested Saturday in a sex trafficking investigation involving a 12-year-old girl. According to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department, detectives found the girl on the 8500 block of Paradise Valley Road Saturday. The department says the 12-year-old was a runaway “who was possibly being sex trafficked.”The two 17-year-old boys were arrested for possession of firearms. “The Human Trafficking investigation is still developing and being handled by Human Trafficking Task Force,” the department added.Marisa Ugarte is the founder of 'Bilateral Safety Corridor Coalition' [BSCC]. For two decades, she has helped victims of human trafficking get back their lives. What startled her about this case was the age of the victim. "The average age that I have seen is 16 and 17. Some 15. Very few 14. But a 12-year-old? You can count them in your hand," Ugarte said. FBI studies show San Diego is one of the highest child sex trafficking areas in the nation. The reason: Tourism. "You have Comic-Con. We have a cyber patrol that we do. In three hours, we had 45 calls of buyers." Ugarte said. These patrollers look for potential buyers on the internet and intercept them before they prey on children. Another reason San Diego's human trafficking statistics are also high is the international aspect. The area's proximity to the border brings in large numbers of sex and labor trafficking. Human trafficking is a billion-dollar underworld operation, with victims so young and trapped, often out of desperation. Ugarte sent a message to the young victim. "Please don't disappear and become one girl on the milk carton. You do not know what is out there. Please. Just think about it. SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (KGTV) — Protests continue to move into the suburbs and other cities of San Diego County, including one Wednesday morning in Solana Beach along Highway 101.Mayor of Solana Beach Jewel Edson helped the two organizers put a rally together in the beach community in less than 24 hours. “We really wanted to this to be our city coming together,” said Edson. Roughly 100 people showed up with signs at Solana Beach City Hall. Susana Arnold, one of the two organizers, said "this is the passion that is existing in all of us, that is absolutely sick of the injustice. I think posting memes and sitting watching the news is not enough." The group, including many families with small children, took a knee at city hall before taking their march up the 101. Arnold and co-organizer Tina Zucker said they wanted their march to be local, peaceful and safe. Many cars driving by honked in support. "We are powerful once we say something," added Zucker. 970

Smoke from the raging wildfires on the West Coast has reached the eastern seaboard.Images from a NASA satellite show clouds of smoke stretching from coast to coast.The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says the smoke made its way east in two different directions. One trail of smoke crossed the Great Lakes region and reached upstate New York. Another path of smoke wound its way through Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky and into the Mid-Atlantic.Some of the smoke even drifted up into Canada.The wildfires have led to hazardous air quality along parts of the West Coast, but air quality in most of the eastern U.S. is not affected. 657
