SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Police officers saved a parrot from a hot car in Sorrento Valley, as temperatures reached upwards of 120 degrees inside the vehicle.San Diego Police say someone noticed a Macaw parrot in a car in distress at a hotel parking lot in the 11000 block of Vista Sorrento Parkway. A San Diego Humane Society officer responded and tried to break the window, before calling SDPD for assistance.Police broke the window and removed the parrot and rushed it to a veterinarian.A police officer told ABC 10News that the temperature in the car was at least 120 degrees. The bird only had a cup of liquid in a Big Gulp cup and no food.It's a misdemeanor to leave an animal unattended in a hot vehicle.San Diego Humane Society said the parrot is doing okay and the owners have been reached to reclaim the bird."Cars get hot very fast, so we advise never to leave an animal unattended in car, especially when it is warm outside. Even with the windows open, a parked car can quickly become a furnace. If the temperature outside is 80 degrees, the temperature inside your car can quickly climb to 120 degrees. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- People on social media are outraged after video shows a security guard questioning a mother's immigration status in a Target parking lot. The woman who recorded and posted the video, Sonia Serrano Zavala, says the guard was asking the mother if she is here legally when she started recording. The unidentified security guard can be heard in the video saying, "You’re illegally here and you’re having babies and you’re probably on welfare."The woman, seen holding a baby in the parking lot, was reportedly asking for money. Midway through the video, the security guard says "it's a scam" and claims the woman has a car and a condo.The incident took place at a Target located in the Marketplace at the Grove Shopping Center. The guard does not work specifically for Target, but provides security for the entire shopping center. The company who hires the security guards for the mall said, "The behavior of this employee is not reflective of the standards we have set for our security professionals, and we will address it."WARNING: The video below contains graphic language.  1136

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — New details are emerging about the death of a man in San Diego Sheriff’s deputies’ custody. A recently released Medical Examiner’s report says an arrestee’s death last year was a "homicide." The District Attorney's office said last year that none of the deputies involved in the in custody death will face any criminal charges. Oscar Leal died last February 28 after deputies responded to his apartment in Vista and detained him. RELATED: D.A.: Officers will not be held liable in 8 officer-involved shootings, 4 in-custody deathsThe autopsy report said the 37-year-old died from a sudden cardiac death due to chronic methamphetamine use, a physical altercation with deputies and being restrained. The Medical Examiner’s homicide classification is not a legal term, but a medical assessment. The DA's office wrote in part of a nine-page summary and statement in December last year: "... His level of methamphetamine intoxication combined with his active resistance combativeness in the duration of the struggle, all contributed to his death ... The deputies involved in his detention acted reasonably under the circumstances in bear no state criminal liability for their actions."The Sheriff Bill Gore wrote in a statement:"I am aware of the Medical Examiner's conclusion regarding the manner of death of Mr. Leal. I respectfully disagree with the classification of the manner of death in this case as a homicide.The pathologist wrote that his death was due to acute methamphetamine toxicity in the setting of agitation, physical altercation, and prone restraint. It was purely due to Mr. Leal's agitation that he was restrained. Peace officers have a duty to restrain those who are agitated and under arrest, as Mr. Leal was. Were it not for Mr. Leal's abuse of methamphetamine he would be alive today. The deputies and nurses on scene rendered immediate aid to Mr. Leal.Mr. Leal brought upon his own death with his choice to use methamphetamine. His manner of death is more accurately classified as an accident."It has not been made clear yet why the medical examiners report took 13 months to be released. 2135

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - On Wednesday, ABC10 News interviewed San Diego County Superior Court Presiding Judge Lorna Alksne about this week's first criminal jury trial since all jury trials were halted in March.“We summoned 800 jurors and about 250 or so postponed their service like we told them to do if they felt uncomfortable or had a conflict or co-morbidity or something like that and of the remaining jurors we called in, only 41 showed,” she told ABC10 News and added, “The system doesn't work without jurors.” She went on to say, “I can only anecdotally think that people are unsure of public transportation or coming back Downtown to serve.”Wednesday marked the second day of the trial which was for an elder abuse case.Judge Alksne said that the courts have sufficient safety measures in place for jurors. “When they went back into the courtroom, they had these plexiglass barriers in between them if they're more than six feet apart and everyone wore masks and there was hand sanitizer everywhere. It's as safe as going to Costco,” she told ABC10 News.The courts have maintained that the only way to address the backlog of cases is with cooperation from San Diegans who are called for duty. She added, “What I [asked] the jurors yesterday was if you had a loved one who was incarcerated [and] pending trial and nobody showed up to do jury trial, how would they ever get their chance for their day in court?”Judge Alksne said that another trial is scheduled for next week and two are scheduled for the following week. The numbers of summonses will continue to increase. She explained that there's no plan to penalize people who do not appear for jury duty but that could change if turnout continues to be low. 1721

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Protesters will be out in full force Saturday protesting the Crossroads of the West gun show in Del Mar.The protest is set to begin at 10:30 a.m. on Jimmy Durante Boulevard and Villa De La Valle.In years past, gun control advocates have targeted the show aiming to have the fairgrounds cancel the event.In 2016, a group of gun control advocates lobbied the Del Mar Fairgrounds board to end the shows saying the venue is inappropriate for a gun show."They glamorize the gun culture and help put more guns and more ammunition into the society.
