SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Padres all-star pitcher Kirby Yates will be out of his comfort zone Sunday night when he and his wife, Ashlee, host a night of stand-up comedy. The event will raise money and awareness for a cause very close to the Yates' heart: Epilepsy.One night in 2018, the couple was asleep when Kirby heard Ashlee begin making strange sounds. "I didn't know it was random and can come at any time or age," she recalls.When searching for ways to cope with the diagnosis, Ashlee turned to one of her favorite things: Stand-up comedy. She had performed at clubs before, but began integrating humor about her condition into her act. "That was actually my outlet. As soon as this happened, that was the first thing I did. I was like, I need to do something drastic to deal with this and I don't know what those options are," Ashlee said. "I like to make people laugh. I like to have fun, so this seemed like a good fit."That led to the decision to host "Comedy for a Cause", which will take place Sunday night at the American Comedy Co. in the Gaslamp. Ashlee will perform with two other well-known San Diego comedians. Kirby and several of the biggest Padres stars will be in the crowd. They also will likely be the biggest targets for the comics' humor, "I know they're big Padres fans, so I'm sure they've been following the season and have some good jokes," Ashlee said. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — More than a dozen exotic dancers who claimed their constitutional rights were violated during raids at two local strip clubs have been awarded nearly .5 million by the City of San Diego.The 17 dancers from Exposé and Cheetah's Gentleman's Club have sought damages from what they claimed where humiliating searches and for being held against their will by San Diego Police officers during searches on July 23, 2013, and March 3, 2014.City Council leaders Tuesday approved two settlements for two lawsuits over the raids. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - People looking for some extra cash on hand during the coronavirus pandemic are turning to pawn shops as one way to make ends meet.Moris Adato, the owner of CashCo Pawn, says business for pawn loans started to pick up near the end of April when people needed extra money for mortgage and rent payments."It's getting crazy right now," Adato says.Pawn shop owners say their loans can help people make ends meet as they wait for things like EDD payments or stimulus checks or search for a new job.When someone pawns an item, the shop owner gives them a loan against the item's cash value. People typically have 4-6 months to pay it back, with interest. Once the loan is repaid, the item is returned to the owner.If someone can't, or chooses not to repay the loan, the item then belongs to the store and can be sold. There's no penalty for forfeiting the item, and it will not affect your credit score.Many stores, like Adato's, will allow people to extend their loans if they ask.Adato says his most common item is jewelry."Jewelry in itself is something to wear and to look good, but it's a commodity," he says. "It's gold, silver, or diamonds. If things go wrong, this is how you get out of trouble."Experts say there are a few things people need to know before deciding to pawn a possession.First, make sure the store you go to is accredited with a state or national pawnbrokers association. That will ensure they follow all the laws and regulations of the business.Second, ask about the terms of the loan, especially the interest. California law caps the interest on a pawn loan at 3% per month.Third, make sure you understand all of the extra costs, including storage and set up fees.Despite the spike in demand, Adato says about 90% of the people who come in for loans pay them back and reclaim their items. But 60 percent of people surveyed say they can't afford needed upgrades.That's why 73 percent of the respondents plan to finance their renovation plans."People want to stay in their homes," says Michael Micheletti, the Communications Director for Freedom Debt Relief. "Once it becomes your house, it becomes your home. So, perhaps people are willing to take on more debt to stay in those communities and those school districts they've become accustomed to."Micheletti says most of the people who plan to renovation will spend either more than ,000 or between ,000 and ,000. "You have to prioritize what's most important."According to the survey, the most popular upgrades are also the most expensive.
