NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Buck McCoy is just one of many survivors from Nashville's Christmas explosion. Friday night he stayed at a friend's house but said he's not sure what's left of his Lofts at 160 home."About 5:30 or so I heard some gunshots - it sounded like four or five, maybe six gunshots. I looked out the window and didn't see anything," said McCoy. That's when he went back to bed, a decision he believes saved his life."Within maybe ten minutes of that a huge explosion, which completely ripped the walls apart of my house, stuff was coming down on me, there was dust everywhere," McCoy said.He got out of bed to find his face and hands bleeding from broken glass and debris. "You know I was looking out the window just ten minutes before the whole explosion, so if I had picked that moment where it exploded to be looking out the window, I feel very lucky on this Christmas to be here. It was that close," he said.McCoy managed to capture cell phone video immediately after the blast as people desperately looked for safety. "I was really thinking that there was some kind of a war going on and that this could be something that I wouldn't get through, that I would not make it through," McCoy said.He eventually walked to a friend's house where he has been staying ever since. McCoy said at one point he did go back home to look for his cat but firemen sent him away. Mohamad is most at home in the kitchen. The smell of homemade recipes taking him back to the best parts of his childhood. A childhood cut short by violence and unrest in his home country, Syria.“When I walked down the street, I was scared to get a bomb in my head,” said the 24-year-old man. “Even walking from the school to your apartment, you’re not safe. That was very scary for me and my parents and everyone that was in Syria."The Arab Spring forced his family to flee their home in Damascus. “We rent an apartment in another city, and we come back to our house and we don’t find a house. We find it clear, everything destroyed. Some people told my dad, 'Your factory work is gone. It got bombed and destroyed,'” recalled Mohamad.With his father’s business and their home gone, the family moved to Egypt to start a new life. “It was kind of tough, to move to a different country where you don’t know the language. It was tough for me,” said Mohamad.That move was just a preview of the challenges to come. After years of applying, his family was accepted as refugees in the United States.“When I moved to this country, I didn’t speak any word of English. It was kind of, really hard to communicate with the people and learn the culture,” he said.However, Mohamad and his parents were met with resettlement help from a local organization.“They were helping us to find school, to find work,” he said of the African Community Center in Denver.English classes, job coaching, legal help—they were all the services funded by the Refugee Act of 1980. Mohamad was determined to prove that support from the government was worth it.“I used to work four jobs at the same time,” he said. “I used to sleep only four hours, to make this dream happen,” he said of opening his own restaurant to share his family’s legacy.After two years of hard work, he reached his goal of opening his own restaurant.“There is so many opportunities here. I am one of the people who found a good opportunity to open my own business in two years. That was really fast," he said.But Mohamad is worried other families, with dreams just like his, will never find the happiness he’s found.“I was lucky, but if someone who came now to the United States didn’t find this sort of organization, he won’t make it here,” said Mohamad.The organizations that help refugees are starting to slowly shut down, because help for refugees in the United States is at an all-time low.When the Refugee Act of 1980 was created, the United States took in more than 200,000 refugees, but since then, that number has eroded steadily.2021 will set a record-low for the program, allowing only 15,000 refugees to come to the United States, and with cuts to refugees allowed into the country, come cuts to the programs that help them out once they arrive.“If the programs keep taking cuts with no recovery, we’re basically removing our ability to take in refugees and support them, which I think might have been there point of the cuts. But I don’t think that’s who we want to be as Americans,” said Dr. P.J. Parmar, a physician at the Mango House, a shared space for refugee medical care and refugee-run small businesses.The Mango House is an independent health clinic, so it isn’t affected by the cuts to the refugee program directly. Parmar said the cuts to federal refugee programs over the decades are forcing centers across the country to shut down.Many services now falling more on independent providers like Dr. Parmar than ever before. It’s a trend he hopes won’t continue.“I think a lot of folks hear the word ‘refugee’ and they think, ‘Oh these are dirty people we don’t want to take care of,’ but the refugee story is the American story,” said Parmar. “All of us, unless you’re Native American, you probably have some sort of refugee background.”Mohamad and Dr. Parmar are hoping families across the country will think of their own stories when they see places like the Mango House thriving in their own communities.“When I moved over here, I had a goal in my mind, and I think it’s similar to anyone…I worked so hard to get something for me and my family, that’s my dream.”A dream he hopes more people will get the chance to have. 4192

They have met the qualifications to refinance their mortgages at record-low interest rates.Home sellers have thrived in many housing markets, as home prices have risen despite surging unemployment, an unusual combination. Home resale prices were up 3.5% in June, compared with a year before, according to the National Association of Realtors. One reason for the increase in prices: Fewer homes were for sale because of social distancing. The reduced supply of for-sale houses led to increased competition among buyers, pushing prices upward.Homeowners must catch up on missed paymentsBut the COVID-19 recession may end up harming more homeowners than it helps.In late July, 3.9 million homeowners were using mortgage relief plans that allow borrowers to miss payments or make partial payments if they have been affected by COVID-19, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. Eventually, those homeowners will be expected to catch up on their missed payments. Some homeowners’ incomes were permanently reduced. They may find it difficult to make good on their past-due payments.Renters could be out in the coldRenters could end up suffering the most. According to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Household Pulse Survey, 18% of renters, or 13.3 million households, didn’t pay their full rent in June. And in mid-July, one-third of renters surveyed, representing 23.8 million households, told the bureau that they had no confidence or slight confidence that they would make their next rent payment.Congress, along with state and local governments, imposed limits on evictions early in the pandemic, but some of those protections have expired. On top of that, 0 extra weekly unemployment insurance payments were set to expire at the end of July, and as the clock ticked down to the August recess, Congress was still negotiating an extension.Even with tenant protections in place, about 4% of renters have received an eviction notice or have been threatened with eviction since March, according to data from the Urban Institute’s Coronavirus Tracking Survey.When eviction bans expire, tenants have few options:Apply for emergency rental assistance, if the state or city offers it and still has money.Reach a repayment agreement with the landlord. MORRISON, Colo. — Alex Biagi lived a normal life for 24 years. He was an athlete and loved art and music. But everything took a turn in 2004.Biagi's left hand started to hurt. At first, he was diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome. On Thanksgiving eve in 2004, Biagi fell down his stairs."My ankle gave way," Biagi explained. "That's when we knew something else was going on."Biagi lost use of his arms, hands and legs. It took four years for doctors to figure out what was going on. He was later diagnosed with chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy. The disease is extremely rare."It affects approximately one to two people in 1,000 per year," said Dr. Robert Schabbing with Kaiser Permanente. "Alex has had a severe case of CIDP." When Biagi was first diagnosed, he gave up on art because his hands simply wouldn't allow it. But three years ago, he saw someone on the internet painting with their mouth."I never even thought about doing it that way," he said. NATIONAL CITY (CNS) - Authorities today identified a motorcyclist who was killed in a collision at a South Bay intersection.Andrew Balderas, 21, of San Ysidro, was riding a Yamaha motorcycle eastbound in the 100 block of Mile of Cars Way just before 7 a.m. Thursday when a Toyota minivan made a left turn directly into his path at Transportation Avenue, according to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office.Balderas, who was wearing a helmet, struck the minivan and was ejected onto the roadway, according to a Medical Examiner's Office statement.An off-duty emergency medical technician arrived shortly after the collision, called 911 and began performing CPR on Balderas, the Medical Examiner's Office said. When paramedics arrived, Balderas was unresponsive and had no pulse. He was transported to UCSD Medical Center in Hillcrest, but doctors were unable to revive him.The minivan driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators, National City police Sgt. Jeffrey Meeks said.Intoxication was not believed to have been a factor in the collision, Meeks said. 1090
