With Congress debating the next economic relief package, American workers are set to lose additional unemployment money at the end of the week.The crisis has affected all sorts of workers, but one particular group is less likely to be able to recover – the older workforce.AARP found 30% of older workers lost jobs or income because of COVID-19.Research from the Great Recession found it takes older Americans twice as long to get back into the workforce. If they do, they almost always never end up making the money they used to.AARP is also concerned businesses might be reluctant to hire older workers because of the increased risk to the virus.“There’s now five generations for the first time ever in the workforce, so having that diverse age will actually help in bringing products and services to the market that appeal to a wide range of age of people,” said Susan Weinstock, VP of Financial Resilience at AARP.Prior to the pandemic, businesses were looking to recruit older workers because of their unique soft skills: being empathetic, calm under pressure, and a good listener.Multigenerational workforces tend to be more efficient, productive and have fewer errors and absenteeism.“Think about something that happened at work when you are 25 and then when you are 55 and something similar happens you have some perspective you can bring,” said Weinstock.AARP has resources specific for older workers affected by the pandemic, including a jobs board with a lot of remote work for those concerned about going to work in person. 1543

At one school, students are learning in a completely new way.We all know it can be fun to play with a dog. But by helping Buster get through an obstacle course, Buster's also helping elementary school student Mason Gentry in ways he hadn't planned."Definitely with focus," Gentry said. "They will say it louder and then you just see their skills improving and wanting to learn more so then they can connect science together and they can do things like that."Teacher Denise Gillette started the program after seeing how it impacted a student with autism."Were you surprised after that initial student had such a positive reaction from working with the dog?" Kumasi Aaron, a national reporter with The E.W. Scripps Co., asked."Yeah, I think I was surprised," Gillette said. "It was just so beneficial, just such growth."Now more students are seeing that growth, learning a variety of skills that can be challenging to teach, like patience, confidence and focus."They can work on something through the dog that you wouldn't really want to address directly with them," Gillette said. "Like I think if you put the spotlight on them and say you need to have impulse control then you get a resistance but when it's over we need to teach the dog this and then they see, 'Oh that's a valuable thing.'"Gillette writes personalized books to complement her student's work with the dogs, weaving in the lessons each one is trying to learn."Nobody wants to be told you need this you need that," Gillette said. It was time to leave Brooklyn.“It’s a wonderful place, that said it’s an urban metropolis and we are people who love to be outside and Idaho is a different type of location that offers various outdoor activities that are important to us,” Wells said.So, they left. After all, all they really need is an internet connection.“The traditional work day has totally changed with our present situation and it’s taken some time to get used to it,” Wells said. “The ability to work remote and see new parts of the country and it makes you happier and ultimately a more productive employee.”Now, they fish, horseback ride, explore and hike. They've even taken up archery.“We’ve hiked in the Tetons, we’ve horseback with a number of outfitters, we’ve taken day trips to other cities like Ashton in St. Anthony. WESTMINSTER, Colo. — A family's lifeline was stolen right in front of their home on Tuesday morning. Someone took off in their 2004 Toyota Highlander with something even more valuable inside — an electric wheelchair. "She goes 'let me just go get the car; I'll be right back,' " said Candace Trujillo.Trujillo's mom drives her to work every morning because she's unable to drive herself. She has brittle bone disease and uses a wheelchair to get around. "I was born with 26 fractures," Trujillo said.Doctors didn't expect her to live past age 2. She's now 28 years old and works five days a week. The morning started off just like any other. Trujillo woke up at 3 a.m. to start getting ready for her job in customer service. She usually leaves the house around 5 a.m. Her mom will pull the car up, load the wheelchair and then help her into the car. On this cold morning, she left the car running and it was gone 10 minutes later."It also had my wheelchair on there, which are my legs. I can't go anywhere without those," said Trujillo.The ,000 power wheelchair was recovered three hours after the vehicle was stolen. It was abandoned approximately 15 minutes from their home."It's just been going on and on in my head all day, I just don't understand why," said Trujillo.The car is still missing, and without it, Trujillo has no idea how she's going to get to work."It's really awful. I don't even know how to describe it," she said. "I'm at a loss of words because the car is everything to us right now. We don't have one." 1581
