When it comes to eating healthy we tend to think about weight loss. But the impact on our blood pressure and cholesterol is just as important.Just ask a young woman who's survived not one, but two heart attacks. She talks about overcoming the odds, and how a heart-healthy diet is helping her fight back.In a small room, it's dinner time. But it's more than a love of food that's bringing these people together. It's a love and appreciation for life."So my name is Michelle," says one woman seated at the table. "I've had two heart attacks."Michelle Melvin and everyone at the table has had at least one close call with their hearts."What did you think when the doctor told you you'd had a heart attack?" The NOW's Kumasi Aaron asked Melvin. "It was disbelief," she responded.Melvin was 41, active and healthy overall when she felt a pain in her temples and her forearms went numb."But, did I ever think heart attack?" Melvin recalls. "No. I was 41 years old. That doesn't happen happen when you're 41." Her first thoughts? Her 8 and 10 year old sons.Melvin says, "It was just more of that sacredness of I can't, I can't die. With these babies at home still."She changed her diet and lifestyle but five years later, she had another heart attack."It wasn't supposed to happen again you know?" Melvin says. "You're not supposed to get it twice."Doctors diagnosed her with SCAD, a rare heart disease that mostly affects young women."The patients that it affects frequently are super healthy patients," says Kasier Permanente Cardiac Registered Nurse Amanda Bloom. "These are women who are out there doing marathons, they really take good care of themselves that's kind of what's so scary about it."Bloom started the support group. She wanted to make healthy eating a big part of it, because of its impact."It can really greatly reduce your risk of having another heart incident," Bloom says. "And for someone who hasn't had one it really reduces the risk of ever having one."Bloom prepares the dishes herself. Kale apple and pecan salad, and butternut squash and lentil soup. When it comes to eating heart healthy, Bloom says fruits, dark leafy greens and vegetables are key.For Melvin, the guidance she gets from Bloom about eating heart healthy is giving her important confidence."It kind of like jump starts," Melvin says. "It's like okay I can do this. I can go back and I can be strong again."Becoming stronger with each bite, for whatever life might bring. You can find more more healthy recipes from Kaiser Permanente here. When Linda Beigel Schulman heard that a geography teacher was among the victims of the Parkland shooting, she knew it was her son. And she knew she had to be with him.Schulman, her husband and her brother rushed to look for flights out of the New York area. They couldn't find an open seat with a commercial airline, so they called Talon Air, a charter jet company, to fly to Scott's side. The company's clients include Martha Stewart and Lebron James, according to their website."I had no idea what the charge was at the time. It really didn't matter what the charge was," she told CNN. "I was convinced in my mind that my son was in the hospital and I needed to get to him as fast as possible."What Schulman did not expect, however, was that she would be charged an additional ,000 for the empty plane's return to New York the next day, bumping the bill up to a total of ,459.13 dollars.Once she landed, Schulman learned her son, Scott J. Beigel, had died that February day after unlocking his classroom door to allow students to seek shelter. He was one of the 17 people who lost their lives after Nikolas Cruz opened fire in the halls of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. The family promptly paid the whole amount with funds from Scott's life insurance policy. But they asked Talon Air to reconsider the return flight charge since they did not travel back on the plane. The company refunded ,000 dollars and told them it was all they could do. 1475

When you decide to live in the desert, you most likely understand some of your neighbors will be scorpions. But, a Phoenix woman says her apartment complex near is being overrun by scorpions. She asked KNXV to get involved after she said the management of the Banyantree Apartment was not helping. "That's it when it was by the wall," said LaPorsha Jones, as she showed pictures of scorpions on her phone.Jones said she has lived in the complex since April, and has found dozens of scorpions on her own. She even sought out help from pest control workers on the property. She says they told her something shocking."He caught 1,052 [scorpions] and he said, that's not even half of them," Jones said.On top of the scorpions, we noticed more problems all across Jones's apartment. There was what appeared to be black mold in the bathroom, and more in the window sill in the living room. She pointed out brown water leaking from her refrigerator, and told us she got sick from using the tap water to cook. She now uses only bottled water. Jones said she had asked management to fix all of these issues, as well as the scorpions, but nothing has been resolved. So, our reporter walked into the office and asked for the manager.A woman sitting at the front desk went to get her, but about a minute later there was a major change in tone. That same woman told our crew there would be no interview. They gave us a number to call for a comment, but after calling and leaving a voicemail, no one ever returned our calls for answers. So, we took action and went above their head to get help for this woman. We contacted the city of Phoenix who gave our team a direct number and person that Jones could talk to. 1797

When we first met Mark Lee Jr. in 2018, he had been working with the group Justice for TEDD Handlers to try and reunite with his K-9 partner Rayco. The two were part of the Army’s bomb detection team.Lee was injured in Afghanistan and left in 2012. It was the last time he saw Rayco. Also in 2018, a report came out that said the Army mismanaged the adoption of more than 200 military dogs, leaving veterans like Lee without the chance to adopt. When Rayco finished his service with the military, he ended up working with the U.S. Capital Police (USCP).The Justice for TEDD group, made up of a few civilians like Betsy Hamptom, were fighting to try and locate these dogs to reunite them.Meanwhile, Lee was struggling. He ended up behind bars and in rehab.“I didn't do too well,” said Lee. “I guess everything kind of caught up with me. While I was incarcerated. The guy at Capitol police that had Rayco watched our initial interview.”After our story, USCP technician Stephen Nunn got in touch with Justice for TEDD Handlers and said he wanted Rayco back with Lee.“It’s been 180 degrees since then, as you can see, I got my best friend back,” said Lee. “It shows a lot about his character being that when he reached out to find me as a law enforcement officer and find out I was incarcerated and still do nothing but want me to have him back.”Lee reunited with Rayco in D.C. and then the two went to Indiana to thank the woman who made it possible.“This is the one I wanted to happen for so long,” said Hampton. “This is a big deal to me. He’s like a son to me. My husband and I have adopted this kid.”It’s like the two old war buddies haven’t missed a beat.“He still has his working harness so if I pull it out of my backpack or pull it up, he goes crazy because he thinks he’s going to get to go work and have some fun,” said Lee.The pair isn’t finished yet either. They are moving to Texas to work with Mission K-9 Rescue. They will help rehabilitate dogs with PTSD, so they can find homes and reunite other military handlers.“Me and Rake are going to go over there and see if we can help somebody else get their boy back,” said Lee.The Justice for TEDD Handlers program is winding down. They were able to reunite 12 handlers with their dogs. A few others went to visit their old K-9 partners. Marines had similar issues finding their improvised explosive device detection dogs after service. The report on the mishandling of K-9s did lead to a change within the military to make sure this doesn’t happen again. 2518

Which is worse? Aggressive driving, drunk driving or distracted driving? They're all bad, but new information out on Thursday shows when it comes to risky behavior on the road, distracted driving now tops the list. Nearly nine out of 10 drivers believe it's on the rise. But experts say there are things you can do about it.From reaching for something to the increasing danger of technology, it has become easier to become distracted while driving. In a study out Thursday, the AAA Foundation found drivers talking on a cellphone are up to four times more likely to crash than those not using a cellphone. Those who text and drive are eight times more likely.Mark Stolberg, the Vice President of training at Masterdrive, said many of us look at distractions as small interruptions we can stop at any time.“The problem with it is the traffic situation can become threatening very quickly,” said Stolberg. “So even a little distraction is very dangerous.”“So if you have to check something else, if you have to check the mirror, if you have to check your navigation right, check that then get back focused on driving," Stolberg added. "Get right back focused on driving.”Stolberg demonstrated that when a text message is received, drivers have a tendency to take their eyes off the road. In a split second, Stolberg said that drivers could miss a changing traffic light, causing potential accidents. Turning off cellphones while driving is one way drivers can remove the temptation of taking their eyes off of the road.  1585
