WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Michelle Obama is going after President Donald Trump in a scathing new video that accuses him of “willful mismanagement” of the coronavirus crisis and of racism. She calls on Black and all young voters not to “waste” their votes. In the video, released Tuesday by Joe Biden’s campaign, Mrs. Obama notes that more Americans have died from COVID-19 than died in the Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam and Korean wars combined. She charges that with respect to the virus, “our commander in chief, sadly, has been missing in action.”The former first lady accuses Trump of being “racist” when he and other Republicans are “lying about how minorities will destroy the suburbs,” which she says is meant to “distract from his breathtaking failures.”She also calls on undecided voters “to think about all those folks like me and my ancestors” and have some empathy for what it’s like “to walk around your own country scared that someone’s unjustified fear of you could put you in harm’s way.”And to Black and brown voters, and all young voters, who are considering sitting out the election, Mrs. Obama urges them to make a plan to vote, because “we don’t have the luxury to assume that things are going to turn out okay.”You can watch the video below: 1262
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump thinks it's a good idea if daylight saving time becomes permanent.A federal law specifies that daylight time applies from 2 a.m. on the second Sunday of March until 2 a.m. on the first Sunday of November in areas that do not specifically exempt themselves. More than two dozen states are considering measures to avoid the twice-yearly clock change.Sen. Marco Rubio and Rep. Vern Buchanan, both of Florida, introduced measures last week to make daylight saving time permanent nationwide. While federal law allows states to opt into standard time permanently — which Hawaii and Arizona have done — the reverse is prohibited and requires congressional action.Trump tweeted Monday that making daylight saving time permanent is "O.K. with me!" 787
WASHINGTON, D.C. – At least 59,494 new coronavirus cases were reported in the United States on Wednesday, which is the highest daily count since August 14, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. The data shows there was also an increase in the number of deaths, with at least 985 reported Wednesday, up from 802 the day before. The nation’s total coronavirus cases stand at about 7,917,300 and more than 216,900 deaths from COVID-19, John Hopkins says. Those cases include people in all 50 states, Washington D.C. and U.S. territories. As has been the case throughout the pandemic, the U.S. leads the world in the number of reported COVID-19 cases and deaths, followed by India, Brazil and Russia. The current rise in cases in several areas of the U.S. has many infectious disease experts worried about a large spike in the fall and winter months, a time when the country is using health care resources to battle the flu. To help combat the risk of a "twindemic," doctors are encouraging all Americans to get a flu vaccination.Dr. Anthony Fauci, one of the country’s top coronavirus experts, told ABC News on Thursday that the spike is “concerning” and that “you don’t want to be in that compromised position where your baseline daily infection is high and you are increasing as opposed to going in the other direction.”Click here to learn more from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) about how you can help protect yourself and others from contracting the coronavirus. 1502

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Democratic-controlled House has approved a bill that would make the District of Columbia the 51st state, but the legislation faces strong opposition from Republicans. The House vote was prompted by the White House's move to use federal forces to clear peaceful protesters so President Donald Trump could walk to a nearby church for a photo op earlier this month.D.C. statehood is an issue that advocates say has become far more important in the aftermath of protests for racial justice in both Washington and across the nation.Democratic lawmakers say Congress has both the moral obligation and constitutional authority to ensure that the city’s 700,000 residents are allowed full voting rights, no longer subject to "taxation without representation."Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, the district’s non-voting representative in Congress, sponsored the bill, saying it has both the facts and Constitution on its side.D.C.'s population is larger than those of Wyoming and Vermont, and its budget is larger than 12 states.Action on the bill in the GOP-controlled Senate is unlikely. If the measure was signed into law, the state of “Washington, Douglass Commonwealth” would be admitted into the U.S. and the new state would elect two U.S. senators and one U.S. representative. The seats would likely go to the Democrats, due to the community’s largely liberal population. The state would consist of all D.C. territory except federal buildings and monuments, including the principal federal monuments, the White House, the Capitol Building, the U.S. Supreme Court Building, and the federal executive, legislative, and judicial office buildings located adjacent to the Mall and the Capitol Building. 1716
