SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A motorcyclist was killed early this evening in a fiery crash on Interstate 805 in Serra Mesa.The fatal accident occurred on the northbound side of the freeway near Kearny Villa Road shortly before 5:30 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.The wreck left the victim's two-wheeler in flames on the roadway and forced a closure of the two left-hand northbound lanes of the interstate in the area, the CHP reported. 450

SAN DIEGO (CNS) -- Homicide detectives Friday were investigating the death of a man who was found unconscious in a Midway District parking lot.Dispatchers received a call around 10 p.m. Thursday from a person who reported finding the man in a parking lot in the 3700 block of Rosecrans Street, San Diego police Lt. Andra Brown said.Officers and paramedics responded to the scene and were directed to the 31-year-old victim, who had suffered trauma to his upper body, Brown said.The man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:38 p.m., the lieutenant said. His name was withheld pending family notification.Police announced Monday that Zarchari Mock, 29, was arrested in connection with the homicide. SAN DIEGO (CNS) - A suspect in the strangulation death of a City Heights woman a half-century ago was behind bars Tuesday following his out-of- state arrest last weekend, San Diego police reported.John Sipos, 75, was taken into custody Saturday in Schnecksville, Pennsylvania, on suspicion of murdering 24-year-old Mary Scott, who was found slain at her home in the 4000 block of 39th Street on Nov. 20, 1969, according to Lt. Matt Dobbs."The investigators exhausted all leads at the time, and the case eventually went cold," he said.Recently, cold-case investigators identified Sipos as Scott's alleged killer via forensic genealogy, said Dobbs, who declined to disclose further information about the circumstances of the homicide.Sipos was being held at Lehigh County Detention Center in Allentown, Pennsylvania, pending extradition to San Diego. 856

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - More than a dozen animal shelters, rescues and sanctuaries across San Diego County Saturday will encourage people to adopt a pet during the fifth annual Clear the Shelters day.Clear the Shelters is a nationwide animal adoption event intended to help as many shelter animals as possible find a forever home. Since the event began in 2015, more than 300,000 pets have been adopted during Clear the Shelters events.The San Diego Humane Society's San Diego, Escondido and Oceanside campuses and the county of San Diego's Department of Animal Services shelters in Bonita and Carlsbad will participate in the event and waive adoption fees for all animals adopted throughout the day.At the county's shelters and the humane society, animals available for adoption have been spayed or neutered, microchipped and brought up to date on their vaccinations, if necessary. Prospective adopters can save time by searching the available pets at a shelter's website."People still need to go through the normal adoption process of filling out an application and doing a screening interview with staff. We just want to make sure their new owners are prepared and committed to an animal," County Animal Services Director Daniel DeSousa said.According to the county, 81 animals were adopted during last year's Clear the Shelters event, while more than 400 animals were adopted at the humane society's three locations last year.
