SAN DIEGO (KGTV) — Despite the pandemic, Veterans Village of San Diego held its annual Stand Down event that helps hundreds of veterans facing homelessness every year. From a glance, this year’s event may seem different. Not as many people were there and stations were more spaced out than normal. But the mission remained the same, reaching out to veterans who are at risk or homeless.Darcy Pavich, the Stand Down director, says the goal is to provide Veterans with the resources they need. Whether it’s housing services, medical referrals, or employment services."It’s difficult for them right now to connect with the services because so many doors are closed," says Pavich. What is also different this year is making sure COVID-19 health guidelines are followed. From requiring masks, to hand sanitizing, and making sure everyone practiced social distancing. This took a lot more planning and preparation to make sure Veterans and Volunteers stayed safe. But even with the changes, Pavich says the simple gesture of reaching out to Veterans made a big impact on those that showed up. "It brings a smile to them and they may not have a lot to smile about right now," she said. "I can never find a good reason why a Veteran should not be housed, safe, and comfortable in their own life." 1292

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Hiring is increasing in San Diego County with local employers adding jobs in all industries, the San Diego Workforce Partnership reported. The most recent U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics show unemployment dropped to 3 percent in April, as San Diego County gained 7,800 jobs month-over-month. The largest increase was posted in the construction field, with 2,200 jobs added. The boom was likely due to improving weather in April after an unusually rainy winter, experts said. Other growing industries included Education and Health, and Professional and Business, which added 1,000 jobs. The Government and Leisure and Hospitality fields each grew by 900 jobs. The smallest growth was reported in the Information field, with 100 jobs added in April. SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - For the first time in decades, the Port of San Diego is putting forth a comprehensive update to its master plan. A port spokesperson says the effort began in 2013 and has been a very thoughtful and open process. However, some residents in the county are just learning about the plan. In April, the Port published a more than 300-page draft of the master plan. "Ninety percent of the people that we speak to had no idea that this plan had been put forth. We have been out at the local grocery stores, going door-to-door, we've been posting here on the path because these are the places where we're going to reach the people who use this area the most," said Cameron Lilley, a lifelong Point Loma resident. Lilley has significant concerns with Shelter Island proposals, including:Up to 1600 new hotel rooms70,000 square feet of retail and restaurant spaceRemoving private and historic docks"Parking is a huge issue already, bringing more tourism to this area will negatively impact the residents who live and use it," said Lilley. On Tuesday she was joined by family and friends at La Playa Trail, encouraging people to give feedback to the Port by the July 31 deadline. They've created a group, Save Point Loma, to try and educate the community. "We're all out here united in this cause," said Lilley. The Port says it has been very transparent throughout the entire process, not only making the draft available to the public but holding community meetings. A spokesperson tells 10News they've used social media, the radio, and community paper ads to try and get people involved. And the Port says it wants to hear from the community moving forward. After receiving initial feedback, they will continue to hold community meetings and will later put forth a revised draft. The comment period for the Master Plan draft goes through July 31. Comments can be emailed to the Port of San Diego at PMPU@portofsandiego.org. Final approval of the plan isn't expected until late 2020. 1998

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Doctors at UC San Diego are beginning to understand the long-term impacts that COVID-19 has on the brain."I think that people should be just as afraid now as they should have been at the start of the epidemic," says Dr. Navaz Karanjia, the Director of Neuro-Critical care at UC San Diego.Dr. Karanjia says she sees COVID patients in the ICU with brain-related issues ranging from hemorrhages and strokes to confusion and delirium. Other patients report a phenomenon called "Brain Fog," where they feel confused or slow to process the world around them."This is a very real phenomenon that is resulting from the fact that COVID has a much more widespread effect on the body than many other viruses do," she says.Studies show as many as 30% of all COVID-19 patients report some kind of brain related problem. That number climbs to 70-80% for patients who land in the ICU. And 30% of hospitalized COVID-19 patients report neurological problems, including concentration and memory issues that last as long as three months after the infection ends.RELATED: In-Depth: Doctors discuss long-term effects of COVID-19Dr. Jennifer Graves is the Director of Neuroimmunology Research at UC San Diego. She's leading a 10-year study of Coronavirus patients to find out why the disease has such a drastic impact on the brain.Already the doctors at UC San Diego have found a handful of reasons."We know this family of coronaviruses, the beta family of coronaviruses, has the potential to be neurotropic, and to invade neural cells," says Dr. Graves. She says the disease could infect cerebral spinal fluid or trigger an immune response that leads to brain problems.Dr. Karanjia says she sees inflammation of blood vessel lining that could lead to some of the more severe reactions like hemorrhages, strokes, or comas. And the damage Coronavirus does to other organs, like the lungs and heart, could lead to lower blood flow to the brain."We're trying to tease apart these possibilities and look at what are the relative contribution of these mechanisms," Dr. Graves says of her research. In addition to the physical damage, Coronavirus can also lead to mental issues like PTSD or depression."We know the overall stress, the systemic stress, the psychiatric stress of going through this disease, or possibly being admitted to an ICU with this disease, or going through an entire outbreak in your family with this disease can lead to some neuropsychiatric symptoms as well," says Dr. Graves.Fortunately, doctors are starting to find ways to help with the problems, from medication to therapy."It's so important for people to know that if they experience symptoms, there is help out there, and they need just to seek it out," says Dr.Karanjia.Patients can also become part of the study by contacting UC San Diego Health. 2824
