SHANGHAI, Jan. 22 (Xinhua) -- Visiting Austrian President Heinz Fischer here on Friday expressed his confidence in the success of the Shanghai World Expo and expectation for further economic and trade cooperation between his country and China.The Expo would have profound influences on the social, economic and culture development of the host city Shanghai, Fischer said in a meeting with Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng.Austria hosted the 1873 World Expo.Fischer said Austria would actively participate in the Expo and Austrian Federal Chancellor Werner Faymann was expected to attend the opening ceremony.Despite the financial crisis, China was the only market of Austria that saw an increase in export volume in 2009, said Fischer.He called for further cooperation in such areas as economy, culture, science and sports.Austria's statistics showed that the trade volume of its export to China recorded a year-on-year increase of 5 percent in 2009, while China's customs said China-Austria trade hit 4.33 billion U.S. dollars from January to November last year.China has now become Austria's largest trading partner in Asia, and second largest outside the Europe and the fourth largest exporters to Austria in the world.Fischer arrived in Shanghai Thursday, or the 100-day countdown to the opening of the Expo. He concluded his China visit and left for Austria on Friday afternoon.

UNITED NATIONS, March 18 (Xinhua) -- China on Thursday voiced its support for the liberalization of global trade and opposition to trade protectionism in all its forms in order to pave the way for the economic recovery in the world at large.The statement came as Li Baodong, the permanent Chinese representative to the United Nations, was taking the floor at the Special High-Level Meeting of the UN Economic and Social Council with the Bretton Woods Institutes, namely the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development."China supports the liberalization and facilitation of global trade, and opposes trade protectionism in all its forms," Li said. "We should strive for the conclusion of the Doha round negotiations in 2010 to bring about comprehensive and balanced results. " Since the outbreak of the financial crisis, world trade has plummeted, and trade protectionism is on a visible increase. It is now the world's fourth largest destination when it comes to incoming tourists, and the rates of growth are moving so quickly that we think this is a realistic target," Rifai said.France is currently the country receiving the most international tourists, at 80 million per year, followed by the United States and Spain, both at 60 million a year, while China has about 48 million, he said."China's tourism economy has moved incredibly in the last ten years. The number of incoming tourists rose from 8 million to 48 million. The potential of the growth is still big because of the size of China," Rifai said.Rifai said the global tourism industry is improving but challenges remain due to the weak economy."The tourism industry has to follow and is very much affected by the general economic situation, and for sure the general economic situation has started to turn around. But we cannot call it a full recovery at the moment," he said.
